Between Kolo and Blitz we'd be ok. I think the real issue is whether we are able to pressure the good midfields of the comp to turn it over to them, especially if it means losing blitz from the middle.

In a world where we get all the targets being mentioned in Curnow, Marshall, Worpel by trading out picks and SDK, we then have to drop a forward and a mid plus Stanley with Kolo in for SDK.

In one scenario where we drop like for like in the fwd line it's Neale going out. Between the 4 rucks Blitz would be the only one still in the team meaning Marshall has to ruck 68% of all ruck contests. If Blitz goes down then we're rucking Jack Henry for the chop out. So that's not ideal.

Another scenario is we drop a small and keep Neale which is better for chopping out ruck contests but then we lose a ground level player and pressure fwd, taking away from our whole brand of front half turnover and also leaking a few entries the other way.

It's only a couple of changes but we would look so different i struggle to imagine what our brand would look like.

Good post.

Worth pointing out that Blitz will be 35 at the start of next season and there's a realistic chance 2026 is his last. While I think he could play at FB on the Darcys and Thilthorpes of the world, what we lose by missing his flexibility and ability to plug holes across the field wouldn't be worth it IMO.

Adding Worpel and Marshall for hopefully only a first rounder + steak knives seems the most realistic way to improve our list next year, Curnow is fantasy land stuff IMO.

We wont be able to do much this year as we have 15 out of contract next year and will probably see Blitz and Danger retire, we will need our future draft picks to replace those we want to delist, otherwise recruitment team will be picking from 60 onwards.

General Question for Cats fans:

If we had to trade ONE current best 22 player to obtain a good draft pick, either for a trade or for bringing in a young talent, who would be the best bang-for-buck player?

In terms of maximum currency with minimal impact on our structure and game style?

I put up Stengle or Mannagh as players with currency who are probably the easiest to replace positionally.
Clark too but he's technically fringe

Mannagh. In an ideal world I would prefer to keep him but we were a good team before we recruited him and we'd continue to be one if he left. Could be a Tim Kelly-esque 'buy low, sell high' situation.

We will take minimal picks this year anyway the draft is ordinary so I dont mind picking at 30 or 60 we will take mellor and I imagine only minimum picks.
I do agree next year is much bigger turnover though.

Stengle? He had more currency in 2023 when he was coming off a 53 goal season and looking for a new contract. But at 27 years old he would still get some interest. Having Dempsey and Mannagh already helps to cover his loss.

Bang for our buck would be Holmes pick 21 turn into two 1st rd picks, but reality is 3 players we could afford to lose don't hold much currency in Moc, Mullin, and Close.

I mean, Jack Martin, but that's not how that goes

I agree although as per my previous comments about his family situation (the player has to want to go). If we went down that route it might be easier to get stengle or close to move as they dont have the same situation at home that he does. But id rather trade one of the small forwards before sdk if we needed currency. Ill be shot down for this but id say the same about humphries-he is a gun but half backs are easier to replace than talls.

We Know that Duncan Guthrie will retire Bews will be granted a club of his choice, we will need to elevate Clohesy, which will leave Ivisic (likely to be delisted) Retschko, Wiltshire, Stevens, and Pike to either resign or delist.

I think clohesy and Stevens probably both get traded.

Id sell Stengle!! Bloke has lost all confidence and his shirking of the contest in the GF was embarassing.

Stengle would have the most currency, otherwise maybe MOC or Kolo but the value is really drying up there

Stengle to Carlton is the only way I see the Curnow deal getting done. Would certainly take that deal over Mannagh going.

It goes against our list management strategy to trade a contracted player but I think the situation we find ourselves in is a bit different to previous years. When someone like Curnow publicly states he wants to get to Geelong, and Mackie publicly states a willingness to do a deal, then you've got a fairly unique scenario in play. If Mackie states publicly that they want Curnow then you can guarantee 100% that the club (including C Scott) see that as a big win and will have a way to make that improve our side. Otherwise they would have already killed off the chat.

In a perfect world (dreamtime) - Curnow to Geelong for Stengle, Stevens and a future 2nd / Marshall to Geelong for our first rounder plus Clohesy

Our 2026 flag side ;)

The rest: Clark - O'Connor - Bruhn - Knevitt - Polkinghorne - Martin - Stanley - Conway -

I would go with Curnow for Close (blues need small forward), knevitt (Blues need wingman) a future first
this years first and Stevens or Ted for Marshall

Cam reportedly wants to play on - been no indication of retirement at this stage, but could be one of those situations similar to Rohan & Menegola where we explain we won't offer a new contract, meaning his welcome to explore options for a new home

Ivisic, Retschko & Pike are all rookies - we may delist one or two, but thinking we'll see at least one re-signed for another year

We know Clohesy is upgrade or delist, but Mullin may also need to be upgraded if the AFL approved 2025 as his third year on the rookie list considering he didn't come out in 2022
