I have no idea why a 30yo AFL-grade ruckman would want to play second banana in a team which didn't make the eight.
He wouldn't but he may get held to his contract.

Mackie was around as a young lad when Moloney was used as trade currency to secure Brad Ottens. At the time it was seen as a pretty radical move, but it paid off big time.

I don't think Charlie Curnow will be as transformational as Brad Ottens, but when someone of his calibre wants your club, and the feeling is mutual, then radical options will be explored.
The difference being that we were utterly desperate for another key forward at the time, and it was very much seen as the "missing piece". We had just been bundled out in a PF where we had arguably had the better of the game, but just failed to kick goals up forward. We desperately needed Ottens, especially after Graham's retirement.

At the time, IMO, it wasn't that radical. Moloney was kindof where Jhye Clark is now - had just cracked the very edge of the 22, clearly had potential, but wasn't right up there with the best young players. In that midfield rotation, he was clearly in front of Haynes, David Johnson and Koulouriotis but was clearly behind the rest of the classes of 99, 01, Milburn and Hunt.

That's not the case this year.

Any suggestion by posters that Marshall doesn't want out of St Kilda is incorrect. It's the opposite, and 100% has told his manager to deal with Geelong and Geelong only.

Now whether a deal can be done remains to be seen. And now that Geelong's season is finished I'd be more confident if we heard something publicly from the player or his manager.

Was really surprised at the Curnow developments and Mackie publicly saying they had interest in getting him to Geelong. Would be a great get but I can't see it happening.

Can we put him on AfterPay?

I agree they are stacked, and there is a real monster dynasty staring at us possibly, but saying we only have 6 players who would get a game in their side is a massive overreaction.

Feel free to do it, put up next years lions best 23 and find the Cats who would walk into the team.
I did it as unemotional as I could, and I did it with a neutral. We got the 6 I listed with 3 or 4 "maybes".
It's not saying the Cats are bad or anything, but pragmatically they have depth the rest of the comp would die for and a whole heap of really young elite players.

I don't disagree with any of that. I think Curnow in isolation is not necessarily transformational, but Curnow Worpel and Marshall all coming in together would be.

  • It adds to an an already multi dimensional forward line
  • It addresses the ruck issue as our most glaring deficiency
  • It adds another piece to a midfield that needs bolstering.

On the last point re the midfield. Worpel and Bruhn added into the midfield mix just about gives us that extra 20% lift I think we need. More rotations and more options with a change to the sub rule and 5 on the bench for the entire game. Unless the club has something else cooking that no one in the media has got wind of.

Just sticking one player into their team..

Humphries does
Guthrie does
DeKoning does
Miers does
Henry does
Stengle does
Atkins does
Mannagh does

We don’t have to agree, but if you believe only six make their team you must be terribly proud of our boys.

Id replace Mannagh with Dempsey!!

I don't think it will get to that stage. If we get a deal done he'll be on a very low contract.

4 year deal at GFC on $250k a year
A new Ford Raptor for him and a BMW X5 from Rex Gorell BMW for his missus
A new role as a brand ambassador for Cotton On getting $250k a year
A board position with Morris Finance and the title of 'executive assistant to someone who doesn't exist' getting another $250k a year
Back ended with a 40 acre farm at Bellbrae provided to him after the 3rd year including 100 black angus cattle
Upon retirement he takes on a role as gardener at Frank Costa's family property on $200k a year where he prunes the fruit trees twice a year.

I would say half a dozen have had better seasons this year, but he's been the 2nd best ruck over the last 5

He had no pre season this year too.

Rucks don't usually hit peak til late 20s, but he needs consistent games by his mid 20s and building the tank for that happens now. He needs at least 15 consecutive games in the VFL next season or it starts to become a worry.

He is very talented, that game against Brisbane he was excellent, and they should be preparing him to breakout around the age of 25 because if you push rucks too early they end up like Sean Darcy.
Don't disagree with any of that. My comments have been connected to those short-sighted posters who've completely written him off. In any event, those who know are persevering.:whitecheck:

Who do they replace.
Just saying "xyz makes it" doesn't make it so.
Atkins, in that Lions midfield, doesn't make it.
Humphries is an oversight, he's a star. Likewise Miers. Probably half our defenders to be fair, but you have to drop someone for them to make the team, try it.
Just goes to show how damn strong they are.

It was a frustrating weekend but we’re sitting better than it feels right now. They had a few playing Saturday that wouldn’t get a game with us either.

Fingers crossed they blow up their salary cap 🤞

Of course, I'm not saying position by position the lions are better across the board, simply they are so stacked, so deep that not many clubs would have more than 3/4 of their best 23 would take the spot of a current (and future) lions 23.
IMO we have more than anyone else of course, but damn it's hard.
Half the issue for us (in this hypothetical situation) is they are strong where we are weak, midfield, so I could find spots for probably 5 of the Lions mids.

Agreed. We get pushed off it far to easy in the contest. I think opposition players find it far to easy to stand up in a Geelong tackle for the most part. Guys like Neale, Rayner, Mcluggages etc just walk through our mids. Maybe an unpopular take, but Gryan should never be seen in a centre bounce again.
We have to many lightweights. Need to trade out a close or miers
Cam reportedly wants to play on - been no indication of retirement at this stage, but could be one of those situations similar to Rohan & Menegola where we explain we won't offer a new contract, meaning his welcome to explore options for a new home

Ivisic, Retschko & Pike are all rookies - we may delist one or two, but thinking we'll see at least one re-signed for another year

We know Clohesy is upgrade or delist, but Mullin may also need to be upgraded if the AFL approved 2025 as his third year on the rookie list considering he didn't come out in 2022
Mullin got upgraded. Cuthrie will be delisted and possibly rookied but i wouldn't hes had his time

He also is making up for lost time and deserves a bigger pay day than we can offer
Winning a premiership would be nice but at his stage of life setting up his family with a career contract is better
Given he has started in AFL late he may have 5+ years left. $500-600k+ pa ain't a bad setup.

EDIT: saw PO's post above at $700, even better = $3.5M

I am trying to not over react to one game where if we got anything our of 2 of our 3 stars (Danger, Jezza, Blitz) we would have been in it all the way...but it felt like our match up in the back half were problematic....and maybe therefore an elite small defender should be on the list?

We just couldn't cover Bailey, Loman, Charlie with Humprhies (who was great but also got goals kicked?) Zuthrie and Clark. maybe it depends where MOC and Mullin get put as either of those I suppose could be that elite small defender? Or do we repurpose someone?

We just felt short - same against Hawks I was scared about match ups....but we dominated out of middle so didn't matter
I Dont think it matters who you put on charlie cameron or the others, the delivery out into space was elite and was always going to be an issue.

The issue is structurally up the field letting them cut through our zone and allowing quality entries.

As hawkins used to rightfully say... You are as a forward the result of what happens up the field.

In the first final when we strangled their run and carry, and thet bombed the ball forward at random, charlie cameron was absolutely useless...

All that changed in the grand final was the quality of looks he got inside 50 to advantage.

Interesting exercise. I'll go

Dempsey > Ah Chee HFF
Blitz > Fort #1 ruck
Neale > Oz fwd/ruck
Holmes > Marshall wing
Stewart > Starcevic hbf
Henry > Lester bp

Was that what you had?
