Business & Finance Giving correct change at the register

Many years ago I kept building up change, gradually had over $1,000 worth. I set upon spending it, I'd feel like Kramer with coins jingling everywhere while walking around :D. Looking back I should have just banked it. Coin counting machines make things so easy now.
Went to JB Hifi, purchased a few dvds (this is in the early 2000's) wound up giving them $60 in gold coins and another $30 in silver.

Over the years I have found newsagents, milk bars and video shops the most receptive to change, as they need lots of it. Some other random places like GAME would always run low on 5c coins, so if I purchased something I'd always make sure the .95cents was all in 5c coins.

Also when paying in cash I tend to have the money out and ready while lining up to pay, in most instances I get the money ready after I grab my items and start heading to the register. When it comes to coins sometimes I will put it in their hand, other times if there's a lot I will put it on the counter (easy to be scooped up, having already sorted the $1/$2 and the silver so its countable!

I wish more vending machines accepted 5c coins would be a lot easier.

Another handy tip (mentioned this on bigfooty before), put your change in a drinks machine... "coin return" the money and more often than not it will spit out your money in cleaner fashion (eg: put $1.10 in 10 cent coins it will spit out $1 coin and a 10c piece). It won't always work, but it usually does.

why is it always an obscure amount above 50? I never pay that much unless i'm going on a trip down south or something.

The tank holds 70 litres, so I'm typically putting in 60 litres or so which ill be $60 or so.

I'm not going to go to the servo on a weekly basis and put in $10-20 at a time, I just fill it up when it is empty.

I can't remember the last time I bought petrol and paid cash.

It's always an obscure amount above $50. Who pays cash for that?
If I fill up our car with, say, $64 of petrol and I have a 50 and 20 on me, I wouldn't be against paying with cash at least...and do sometimes.

We fill up every 4-5 weeks. We both live close to the train and work in the city, so the car is usually unused between Sunday night and Friday night or even Saturday morning.

Counting coins on the counter of the 7-Eleven

from quarter past six 'til quarter to seven

The manager, Bevan, starts to abuse me.

"Hey man, I just want some Muesli"

I work in a cafe and welcome correct change customers give. The amount of times we've run out of $5 notes and $1 and 50c coins is ridiculous, as $3.50 coffees are the most popular item.

25 min round trip to work for me - weekly spend on petrol is about $30.

Same. Altho I use only half a tank each week, I still fill up with petrol every weekend. Dont care re. price either. Sunday mornings usually when no one else is there + i grab the Sunday paper.

Fill up the private car once every 3 weeks

Oh wow, good timing. Ran into market to get a few things on way home tonight. No self-serve open, so had to use "express"-lane

(Bill comes to $15.25)
Hands over $20 note, 20c, 10c.
Cashier: "You gave me too much" (tries to hand back silver)
Me: "That's fine, keep the 5c" (wow high-roller tip!)
Cashier: "I don't think I can do that" (starts getting coins from till)
Me: "That's ok, (sees coins) - do you have a $5 note?"
Cashier: "The change is $4.75" (tries to hand over coins).
Me: "I actually gave us $20.30, so the change is $5"
Cashier: "Oh. I will call my manager." (Ding, red light)
Manager: "What is the issue?"
Cashier: "Customer wants $5 change"
Manager: (looks at screen) "Sir, the change is $4.75".
Me: (Points to coins still sitting on till). "I gave the cashier 30c in coin as well"
Manager: (looks at coins, then screen, then coins). "I'm sorry sir, that isn't right". (looks at screen again).
Manager: (keys password 1234 into screen, then adds "-30c CASH" to transaction. (Screen now says $4.45 change)
Manager: "There you go, sorry about the confusion. (walks off)
Cashier: (Looks at screen, change, screen, change). "I'm sorry." Hit's buzzer again.
Me: "Look, it's fine can I just have my change"
Cashier: "Oh no, I have too much now."
Manager: "What is it now?"
Cashier: "I have too much change"
Manager: (Looks at change, then screen). Presses button, saves transaction. "I'll fix it". (Takes my $20.30). "Come with me"
(we walk around to service desk)
Manager: (rings up receipt, shows total of $15.55 - 30c more than it should be). "That will be $15.55". Looks at my $20.30. Enters $20 and gives me the 30c. (I was past arguing at this point)
Manager: "$4.45 change, thank you for shopping at ....."

Lol, f'ing mongs
