... if the bowing man had kicked straight, we'd have have lost and our season would be in deep shit.

So how did we all but lose to an ordinary side (statistically speaking). Sure we missed some shots, but so did they. So without being overly negative, what do we need to look at?

My thoughts are:
- struggling forward targets: Hale was good tonight, and we are lucky to have LT and Campbell, but Thommo struggled, and without CJ and Azza we don't look that potent.
- players drifting in and out. Grima, Urquy, Ross were all good a stages tonight, yet seemed to go missing for large parts of the game. A question of more games, I guess;
- an inability to man up their receivers, including Lonie and Pearce, at key stages. From the TV it was hard to see why. But that was terrible...

Thoughts?

Its been done already.

Read some of the other threads.:thumbsu:

We are a pretty inexperienced side at the moment, so all things considered, it was pretty good to get a win.

I think we are really missing Azza, Hamish and JWS. They would all add so much to what we are lacking at the moment ie. a bit of attacking flair, marking marking options.

Friday's game against Collingwood is going to be huge... wining the clearances is going to be all important.

It will be interesting to see who we play on medhurst, I forget who was on him last time? I know Lower was on him for a bit. He has been really good for them lately, very dangerous when he has the ball.

maybe we just managed to beat an ordinary side because we are just a little better than an ordinary side - statistically speaking.

Our forwards are struggling this year, the ones that we relied on last year anyway. Jones and Thompson are down through a combination of returning from injury and poor form and Edwards has been missing through injury since the sun used to shine. IMO Hale has improved in his forward role and has been good and getting better. He has started taking strong marks and his kicking is ok too. Thomas and Campbell whilst a little inconsistent or innaccurate at times have both been very good for us too.

As you mention, more games is what is needed by Grima, Urquhart and Ross. Match fitness is a whole different kettle of fish. Also perhaps trying too hard, by wanting to impress, every game for them could seem like playing in a final - raising the intensity almost subconciously. Also time on the ground and tactics may have seemed that these 3 in particular were out of the game for periods. For example, who knew that Grima was down at full forward until midway through the 3rd quarter? And was he down there to drag Surjan away from the middle? Ross also did a stack of running with and without the ball, so a longer spell or two on the bench would let him run again when next he was on.

The seeming inability to pick up receivers is a combination of things. Players being drawn to the ball, to a contest, a rotation - either on field or off the bench or a turnover can all create a loose man. Also the hard work by the loose man to run to space. At times last night we played an 18 man zone when Port kicked in, this created several loose men for Port. That Pearce gets loose is just his running capacity and footy smarts. That Lonie gets loose shows that he is infact a cat and will go nowhere near a contest. The TV does make it hard from its narrow perspective and focusing and the moronic dialogue of the commentators, but usually there is a reason, be it acceptable or not.

I think they are my thoughts! :D

I was at the game.
Last nights performance wasnt pretty, we were so lucky to get over the line.
It was our innacuracy from set shots that would have pretty much lost it for us ike it always does and it F****n pisses me off.
How the hell did Matty campbell miss that shot on the run directly in front of goal???? we missed other some sitters from no more than 30 mtrs out and most of our goals were gimmies, It's not the first time thats happened either.
Unluckly for port they were just as inaccurate.

I like the idea that Dunstall (I think) brought up in The Hun a few weeks ago,... a full time goal kicking coach could be the way to go in this day and age. Probably just about the most important skill to have in our game.

Threads like this appeared after the wins against Collingwood, Doggies, West Coast and now Port. We havent peaked yet and our best is weeks away but unlike last year where simmo came out and said we peaked in round 17 against the hawkers in tassie i think North is timing their run perfectly for the finals.
