Re: Goodwin, Reilly IN

I actually hope that in the SANFL, Walker gets 0 goal, but 20 posessions.
It makes me weep that Walker is out of the side.

For ages we've had the problem that we're super competitive but just can't kick enough goals. We chase, we tackle, we pressure, we get our share of the footy... just can't score.

Finally Walker comes along who CAN score but doesn't do all the other crap... and we drop him! So that he can work on the other side of his game in the SANFL

Why don't we drop the blokes who can't finish or win the footy up forward? Get them to go back to the SANFL to work on that side of their game.

Walker kicks 6 in the first half and none in the 2nd so that means he's inconsistent? Rubbish. We'd probably have rated his game higher if he'd kicked one goal in each quarter, four for the game

A forward's role is highly opportunistic in nature. Opportunities present themselves only occasionally throughout a game (even in a good game) and you have to be good enough to take your chances. These opportunities are fleeting and don't present themselves at evenly chronologically spaced periods throughout the match. Consistency is impossible. Sometimes when it rains it pours.

There'll be plenty of time for Walker to spend time in the SANFL when Burton is back. Instead we drop him now and when Burton returns there won't be room for him.

just out of interest.

could we actually be "resting" walker? there are no two better games to rest a player and we have done that previously with players under 21

Think it is a combination of resting him and getting him to find ways to get into games when things are not going well for the forwards. It's a hard gig in the forward line of an AFL side. You don't just have to beat your own man, sometimes the majority of the opposing side seems to be going up for a mark against you. We are going okay at present, but there is still room for improvement in our delivery to the forwards. Dropping it constantly on the heads of blokes like Tippett and Walker ain't too smart when a flood is on.
I think we should take a leaf out of Collingwood's book. They are masters of the short, sharp pass inside 50 to a leading forward.

That was my thinking as well. We have seen a lot of young players burn out by the end of the season, maybe we're anticipating a finals campaign and want a fit and firing Walker when he's really needed. Richmond and Freo are both easy matches that we should win without him, so why not give him a couple of weeks rest in the SANFL. It also enables us to try out McKernan for a couple of matches (obviously the broken arm prevents the second match from happening).

Re: Goodwin, Reilly IN

We did drop a bloke who can't win the footy up forward. Walker.
Yeah, Franklin, Fevola and Roughead kick bags of goals every week too. Just like every forward does.

Good post.

It has seemed that now that we've got a tall key marking target up forward in Tippett that we have been 'lazy' at times with our delivery, content to bomb to the hot spot rather than select the smartest, most dangerous option.

Hopefully this evolves over time and of course there are times the long option will be the best option... but need to have a bit of variety.

Re: Goodwin, Reilly IN

Not sure why it would be a 'rest' as Walker just had a week off with the mid-season break and he hasn't spent much time on the ground anyway.

Not that I subscribe to the rest theory but I suppose it's not beyond the realms of imagination that they may have tied this rest in with the break to give him an even longer rest.
