COLLINGWOOD announced an $8 million loss this week. How can an AFL club lose that much money? Perhaps, after so many years of making its own rules and holding the AFL to ransom, some within the club think that they are invincible; that the Collingwood name alone guarantees riches and success.
The reality, however, is that Collingwood is the Paris Hilton of the AFL. It is famous for being famous. One premiership in 50 years is not the record of a club that presumes the role of AFL superiority.
If anything, the seemingly vacuous Hollywood heiress has more substance than the under-achieving Victorian club. At least she turns a profit.
Any organisation can make a bad decision or a bad investment in, say, a hotel. There are always associated entrepreneurial risks about such ventures.
AFL clubs should never be entrepreneurs. Innovative, yes; bold, yes; but never stupid about where the money should be invested.
The club's mercurial president. Eddie McGuire, has assured the Collingwood faithful that the club has enough cash reserves to cover this crisis.
We'll see. Cash reserves appear to be disappearing quickly in the present economic environment.
Collingwood's other disappointing action this week has been to try to block Richmond's move to draft Ben Cousins. Having had the opportunity, and indeed the inside running, to take the troubled star in the national draft and choosing not to, the Magpies obviously don't want any other team to claim him.
To be completely fair to Collingwood, it is not the only AFL club that is protesting Richmond's stunning strategic move to place Graham Polak on the rookie list as a mature-age rookie, so that it can claim Cousins with a second pick in the pre-season draft.
But the Tigers have blind-sided Collingwood and the Magpies can only watch in frustration as Richmond take the proven match-winner that should have been theirs. They have only themselves to blame.
Collingwood's habit of running roughshod over the AFL has to be curtailed. The ridiculous situation where the club refuses to wear an alternative uniform to avoid clashing with opponents is an example of its arrogance.
The demand to participate in all the important blockbuster games places most of the other clubs at an enormous disadvantage, as does the favoured draw the Magpies have with the coveted Friday night games.
It is staggering, given that the team rarely travels outside Victoria, that it hasn't had any success in this new age of AFL football.
Ever since 1992, when previous president Allan McAlister miraculously negotiated that Collingwood would never have to play again at Princes Park - Carlton's home ground where the Magpies had an appalling record - Collingwood has been blessed year in, year out with the perfect draw. Still it fails, and worse, looks to blame others for its failures.
Eddie McGuire moved heaven and earth to remove the concessions that the AFL had granted to the teams in the developing football markets of Sydney and Brisbane - but only after those clubs started to show signs of success.
Richmond's move to draft Cousins is a brilliant piece of football cunning.
The AFL should breathe a sigh of relief, because it could not afford for Cousins to be left out in the cold without a club.
It surely will approve the Richmond plan, which ironically could provide an opportunity for the clubs which have a pick before Richmond in the pre-season draft to take him first.
That would be the ultimate irony. Actually, even better than that would be an opponent beating Collingwood in a vital game with Ben Cousins starring!
In the meantime, Collingwood, like the bully that it is, can only protest in vain.
It had its chance and passed on it. There's no point in squealing. Just go back and try and work out where the eight million went.
Cornesy will be back on air, 4-7pm weekdays on 1395 FIVEaa, next year.

Graham, I think you may have your facts wrong.

1. Teams want to play us in the blockbusters. It makes them $$. I bet if Adelaide got to play on a day like Anzac day it would be us that they would choose to play against.

2. I'm sure the team would love to travel to Aami every week to kick the crows arses time and time again.

Seriously, Never have I heard such a bullshit, obvious Collingwood bashing article in all my life. If only I was a writer, I would love to write one about the Cornes family....:):thumbsu:

By the way.... Dave, I beat you..... :p:p:p:p

What a deadset w***er...

Memo Graham: The Collingwood Football Club and it's jumper has been in existence longer than you, both Adelaide clubs, and the AFL itself. By, oh I don't know... let's say 100 years.

The Collingwood jumper is an iconic and symbolic entity of the Collingwood Football Club and the Collingwood Football Club only, it is not for the AFL or scraping the bottom of the barrel you Graham Cornes to tell us how it should look.

You claim Collingwood demand to be a part of all blockbusters, look more closely and you will see that in fact these games are blockbusters because Collingwood are in it, with our massive supporter base. Make your own blockbusters... oh no sorry, not enough fans will turn out right? Do you want us Collingwood supporters to turn up to watch your teams play to make it a blockbuster for you? Or do you just want to hijack games like Anzac Day and Queen's Birthday and our Sydney games, just push us aside when we created it? I don't think so mate, it doesn't work like that.

Collingwood is questioning Richmond's right to place Polak on the rookie list, Ramanauskas is the only other player before who has been allowed this due to suffering from cancer, Polak's situation too is unfortunate but now the rules if this goes through will be relieved to excuse cancer patients and people who get run over by trams. Where does this lead next? Ben Cousins himself on the Tiger's "rookie" list while he overcomes using illegal substances? It goes beyond the spirit of the AFL's kind relaxation of it laws in the Ramanauskas case to rookie list Polak and then sign up a drug addict. All clubs should be riotous if this is what proceeds.

I always give him a bit of leeway because he has such a hot wife

I'm sick of hearing from this prick...

You have to ask yourself what exactly did he ever do to allow him to be a special comments guy on AFL...

He played a mere 5 games in the VFL for North Melbourne. Wasn't up to it.

Coached the Crows for 3 years, no flags.

Yeah so what his sons play for Port Adelaide but him personally has jack shit experience or knowledge about the AFL so he should stick to what he knows.

The SANFL. The only area of football he is qualified to comment.

In regards to his opinions on AFL, I'd be more interested to hear what Warwick Capper has to say.

You Just Figured out Now that G Cornes like his kids are Idiots?

is this our first year we have not turned a profit for a while ? everyone seems to be on collingwood because of that when it was mainly due to the two hotels which caused the main part of the loss.

im not really good with this side of collingwood so i may be wrong with what ive said, but i can remember a few years back we were bringing in a profit nearly every year where other clubs werent. suddenly now everyones making it out like collingwoods on the way down.

I haven't read the article and won't, because frankly Ivan Milat has more credibility than Graham Cornes.

I stopped when I read the bold part "Collingwood's demand to play in all the blockbuster games".

These games aren't blockbuster games without us in it. You can't just whack Port Adelaide and say Freo together and put a blockbuster stamp on it.

He should concentrate on more pressing issues such as why the **** don't South Australians turn up to footy games.

LOL hahahaha, OMG Cornes you are a complete asshat! I love the theory that Collingwood "gets to play in blockbusters" because we wield some power over the AFL.

It's like saying Santa demands access to people's homes because he heard that on Christmas Eve, people might leave milk and cookies out. :D

Cornes is the king of shooting fish in a barrel. He can't write an article without bagging Victoria or Collingwood and of course the dumb sheep over in South Australia never question him when he is clearly wrong because he's preaching to the faithful.

I'm sick to death of crap one sided media in South Australia, there's only one of everything. One paper, one sports radio program and guess what - the same people are on both. It sucks because unfortunately you can't carry the internet around with you all day to listen to good radio like you can on 3AW and SEN. Can you believe the clowns over here didn't want to listen to SEN over here because they didn't want to hear about the other 14 teams in the competition only the 2 over here. Now three times as many people listen to an easy listening music station which took over from SEN.

Welcome to South Australia!

It's a genetic thing.
He has a very faithful audience in SA because he is related to most of them.
I don't actually read anything Cornes writes so I can't really comment on the recent "sour grapes" article.
Suffice to say he still has a chip on his shoulder that he was not born in Victoria and never got a chance to play real footy for Collingwood.
I can understand his disappointment. Add to this the way his two sons turned out and you would have to forgive him if he was a little cantankerous and brain addled..

just to let you guys know, I've used Jabso's post to defend Collingwood against the other users of bigfooty.

Apart from the Princess Park Claim, he is pretty much spot on.

You make Cornes look like a Collingwood supporter, what a disgrace you are to your family.. what a pity none of their honour and loyalty managed to trickle down to you.. if you can't handle being a nobody in such a famous family then I suggest you change your name.. or the club you supposedly support :thumbsd:

Go have a cry over your sons sick child, we dont wanna hear this crap.
Are you the person people on the other thread about this subject are complaining about? It is a pretty doggish act if it is you.:thumbsd:

Actually he was born in Victoria but there's no doubt he's bitter he doesn't get the kudos HE THINKS HE DESERVES from the Victorian football public. If he had of put his nuts on the line and went to the best competition earlier he may well of, like plenty of other South Australians and West Australians, and Tasmanians who tried their luck and succeeded in the big league.

He has the biggest chip on his shoulder in the world for a bloke who's pretty much the Mayor of Adelaide and can pretty much say and do what he pleases.
