Just ran it by my principal - who himself is a one eyed Freo man - but I don't have any Long Service Leave available to me, and I can't get short leave that close to school hols... His response, "sorry but looks like you'll be watching it here on TV".

My wife got the same response which canned the driving idea and I was actually looking forward to that. But last night there were still seats on the Friday night flight with Tiger. Not ideal as we wont get in till 10:20pm and so no backup if anything goes wrong but we are going. On the bright side with the school holidays and tickets getting so much cheaper if you can leave it a few days we're going to hang around till Wednesday, would be good to get back to Freo to celebrate but I'm sure we'll find ways to entertain ourselves in Melbourne :) .

Just checked - sold out... But thanks for the info.

What is the chance of the club putting on extra flights for members, like they did for the Cat's game?

I've booked return flights to Sydney for around $700. Myself and a few others will then hire a car or mini bus depending on numbers and drive to Melbourne from there for approx $100 each including hire, fuel, etc.

Could be an idea for anyone who doesn't have time to drive the whole way. The other way is to drive from Adelaide onwards. We figured we'd rather be stuck in Sydney if Freo don't make the GF.

They did this in 06 when we made the prelim should we make the GF but you won't like the price. Much cheaper to fly to Sydney and hire a stretch limo with 8 blonde models to massage you the whole way to Melbourne. And still have change

This is my mothering moment. For those thinking of 'gunning the nullarbor' please take it easy. I have done the trip a few times including one in 2.5 days and in retrospect it was a dumb thing to do. Driving at night can be pretty dodgy, and I know of one incident where a Camel went through the windscreen killing the front passengers. As unlikely as that is to happen, a Kangaroo can do just as much damage. Anyway it is in its own way one of the most beautiful trips in Australia that really lets you appreciate the vastness of Australia, and should be done slow enough to enjoy.

My mum (who is a travel agent) reckons that the airlines will put on extra flights if we make it.

Flying to Adelaide and driving from there with return flight from Melbourne to perth on tuesday booked tickets is the cheapest way and quickest ,less lost time off work

Haha, a camel. Wow. Makes the roos on the way up north sound pretty tame.

Seriously it is dangerous driving the Nullabor at night for wildlife. Family member was almost killed doing it. Share the driving and go from sunup to dusk you will still get there in 3 days driving.

It's dangerous driving home through a state forest in the middle of the night after every home game.

The last time I did the Nullarbor crossing it was gravel the whole way, these days it should be a doddle.

But the Model T was a new car then... things have changed.

Falcon 500, no A/C. Pussies.
I drove to Queensland and back in an EH Holden. Also did the Nullabor in an HG Wagon and one memorable trip in a Hi-Ace van with 4 band mates and all our gear on my first music tour over east. We went from Perth to Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, Geelong (played the Barwon Club) and Adelaide. 8 weeks on the road with 4 blokes and a load of music gear and dangerous drugs. Rather poke my eyes out than do it now!

I looked into this a few years ago (2010?). A 42 seat coach with driver came out to about $500 per head return. I may have to look into again.

I booked accommodation in Melbourne for GF night ages ago, so that's a few less at Seppo's place. I was going to wait until we at least get in and the extra flights are announced to see what price they are offered at, with a backup of driving across and sharing the driving between four of us. Taking a bus would at least mean less likelihood of spilling my beer swerving around a wambat.

AROUND ????

Sounds like there could be a good contingent of people driving over, the old man, a couple of mates and I are thinking about doing the drive probably leaving early Wednesday morning aiming to arrive Friday afternoon. Be great to have designated camp spots along the drive for everyone to meet up.
