Drove across with the old man last year for the Melbourne game, first time doing so.. seriously driving at night is one of the eeriest things i have ever seen with those 100's of roo's just standing beside the road, as though they are deciding whether life is worth living or not. The thickest fog you have ever seen doesnt help the equation either.

I ran out of oil once in the middle of the 90 mile straight. my brother volunteered to hitch hike to the nearest garage and disappeared in a big truck. I smoked a joint and lay on top of the roof of the car and stared at the stars. Eventually the silence and sheer magnitude of the desert freaked me out and I retreated inside the car. Its a spooky place.

I'm sure the joint would of added to the spookiness.

I hear you E. I have driven it a few times. The last trip I was coming back from Qld. I stopped at the last carpark in SA were the Nullabor meets the Southern Ocean cliffs. I was there to have a quiet ale and enjoy the aloneness before camping at Border Village for the night.

It was just after midnight and the moon was in the southern sky. There was 70% cloud and lightning in the distance but there was a eerie calm. 10 minutes of that spooked me and I jumped in the car and got out of there.

I kept thinking Russel Crowe was gonna show up with his skin head mate and throw me off the cliff, lol. Very surreal place indeed.

I have a photo of me throwing a frisbee off those cliffs, man it took a long time to disappear.
Yes its the endless silence, the sheer quiet of the place somehow manages to convey the age and size of it all.
I actually was imagining dreatime aboriginals coming out of the darkness lying on that roof . . speaking of which there is a great show on ABC about how aboriginals used to live that has an episode where they travel to this giant cave on the Nullabor where they used to have manhood and other rituals. Well worth checking out.

Some advice for those planning to drive through the night if we get through. Wait at one of the servos for a road train to come through and slot in behind it, at a safe distance of course. They don't stop for wildlife and act as a battering ram. They may travel a bit slower than you would drive during the day but it is much safer. Lets hope we all have the problem of how to get there after next week.

yeah i did that once on one express adventure across(adventure being the keyword in this instance)
ran over some truck tyre debris wnich popped out from underneath the semi prettty quick
ripped out all the linkages of the old girl(xc station wagon 302,built for the nullabor)
was but a minor incident of that particular trip
all i can say is be careful people

You'd think nobody had seen a roo before. It's the wombats you really have to watch out for, because they will take out the underneath of your car.

I don't know if you see them now, but it was a magnificent sight to see a wedge tailed eagle rising up off the carcass of a dead roo as you drove past, with a wingspan which seemed as long as the car. Then again, cars weren't that common on the road back then and occasionally one would go through a windscreen.

While we're on the subject of "back in my day", I hope the current generation appreciate laminated glass. Driving hundreds of miles in blistering heat on a dusty road with no windscreen was no picnic, and it happened often.

The Wedgies are still about.I saw a mating pair on the eastern leg and again on the homeward journey, trip before last. They've become a bit like our feathered foe up the road though and are no longer a bird of prey;simply road kill gourmets.

So, it looks like my brother, a mate and I have three tickets to the grand final lined up. (Uncle had 3 in the ballot, and looks like he has them, after ours didn't make it), and it looks like the only way we're going to get there is to drive.

Anyone done the trip before? If we have 3/4 people driving shifts, how long can we do it in, realistically? We're going to be taking a Nissan Maxima which is fairly new and that we're going to service beforehand.

Also, if anyone wants to join us and split fuel, let me know.

Have a read through this thread, plenty of advice for the fans 'Gunning the Nullabor'

Our numbers came up in the ballot! Leaving Wednesday. If you see a white impreza with purple chevrons across the bonnet say g'day!
