Switkowski would be great to have fit and available at the moment. He adds that pace and aggression when the ball hits the ground. He didn't get a lot of the ball last year when he was playing but his pressure and attack on the ball couldn't be questioned. I was hoping after the preseason that he had that he could take that next step up and start to hit the scoreboard a bit more this year as well.

I don’t. I think he’s soft, turns from contact, opposition players shrug him off easily, runs to the wrong areas, defensively poor.
I know Brad Hill plays like this too, but he was getting the pill 30+ times a game.
As the post above says, he’s a C grade player. Might become a B grader, but I think we have options that will be better right now than him. He’s 25 already.

There are bigger problems than Bewley.
I hope Acres turns out to be awesome, he had a great pre-season. I have high hopes for him but his history with St Kilda is that he didn't finish top 10 in the B&F in his 6 years there in a team that bottom 8, if not bottom 4. I get the feeling he would have been in the Whipping Boy leaderboard had he been at Freo the last few years.

Bewley has been ok. I agree his defensive efforts at times have been woeful. I hope after a number of terrible defensive efforts against GCS in the first half where he was moved from wing to HFF during the game, that he was given a stern challenge to improve. It seemed to me that he did improve in his defensive efforts against Adelaide.
I think his kicking is quite decent. In round 2 against Brisbane I remember him collecting the ball from his toes and in the process of falling forward managed to spear a kick lace out to Tabs. Might have been that incident where Tabs ran back from the mark and inexplicably dropped the pill.
Did a couple of nice things including where he spun around out of a tackle and out marked an Adelaide player. Also certainly improved defensive area:
17 defensive acts up from 7 (Bris), 4 (Port), 10 (GCS - 7 of them in the second half after his particularly poor first half).
Whilst he is 25, he has only had one full preseason and his second season disrupted. I agree though that Freo would be better served with him being depth but now is the best time for him to be challenged to improve and make the most of his opportunity. Things such as agility, defensive efforts and body work can and do improve with AFL exposure and preseasons.
He stepped up from a VFL challenge and hopefully he can step up further again in the AFL system. Whether he progresses to a solid/regular AFL player or a short career as a depth player is up to Bewley.

no argument from me that there are bigger problems. I just don’t see Bewley being up to scratch long term. I’m hoping our top Draftees go past him.
curiously, out of the 22 we had out there Sunday, who would you drop for Acres, Fyfe, Henry, Pearce and Hamling? I see no gain in dropping Young or Serong atm.
The consensus at Saints was that Acres was always played out of position. Wasn’t given enough time on wing or ball according to saints fans. I’m not too sure of that, but judging purely his pre season at Freo, he looked good.

Wilson needs form but I would say he needs to stay in. Creates a problem when Conca is healthy too. Seems highly rated inside the walls. I don’t mind him, but can have stinkers.

Conca was reasonable last season. But he’s been underwhelming this year. I hate seeing the ball in his hands at half back. He’s a calamity waiting to happen against a decent side. I know he’s a good leader and seems a decent bloke around the club, but there’s no way he’s B22 in any team that wins a premiership. His injury might be an opportunity for someone to stake a claim.

While Acres obviously didn't set the world on fire at St Kilda:
1. Saints fans treated him as the opposite of a whipping boy from what I can tell. They thought he was hard done by and that there was a A-Grade AFL player if he could recieve better coaching.
2. He was already BOG from memory for us against Carlton in Marsh 1. Positive sign that he'd avoid the whipping boy.

I doubt Hughes would be dropped. He’s mostly solid as a rock, and I would say the toughest and most courageous player at our club.

Someone else does because Hughes would stay. I think they’d drop Wilson or Young before Hughes. He’s a much much better player than people give him credit for imo.

I think he’s proven to be a much better 1v1 defender and he’s done well against bigger bodies. But that role goes when our talls come in.
I don’t like Hughes in the running type role. I think dropping Young for Hughes would be an awful call (on Present form) due to his disposal, and Wilson in form running off half back is also too important.

Bad call. Wilson was huge against Brisbane and Collingwood last year with 30 and 26 in each. In fact, he had big games in most of our 2019 wins.
I would take Wilson running with the ball off half back every day over Hughes
Yep, I have been frustrated with Wilson the last few weeks but he is coming off a long layoff. In the same was we have to get games into young guys we have to get games into our best players who are lacking match fitness - Wilson and Stephen Hill at their best are both match winners and I'm happy we allow them to gradually find their feet.

While you can argue guys like Bewley and Schultz aren't up to AFL level (they aren't at this point but they aren't horrible), fringe guys like these aren't the reason why teams lose games. If we lose games it's not because of people like them, it's because the team as a whole sucked. Unless it's a crucial mistake late in the game, then you blame the whole team other than the few that played well.
I think that once Pearce and Hamling come back in then Logue fills the current position that Hughes is playing in, that lock down type defender on the third tall. So Hughes is then competing for a rebounding defender position which is currently filled by the likes of Wilson, Hill and Young, all who have better pace, skills and decision making than Hughes. Don't get me wrong I think Hughes still definitely comes in to consideration, however if we are injury free i don't believe that he has a spot in the back six.

I'm a bit worried about Cox. He shows some good signs and I REALLY hope he makes it.

It probably doesn't help that he's basically been put into the no.1 defender role this season, not his natural role.

I don't think he'll ever be a star but I reckon he's great value to have on our list. He's young, he's versatile, he's got some really nice skills in his armoury and his ceiling is pretty high.
Unless he turns into a mercenary and demands a huge salary, he should always have a role to play in purple.

Exactly. I don't think I'm the only one who prefers him up forward either. Reckon he's good value when one of our keys goes down
That discussion about Cox says “depth” to me, which is a very handy thing to have. Critical even. Our preferred 6 KPPs are significantly ahead of him and Cox seems to have plateaued (a harsh assessment in the current circumstances). They just aren’t available often enough.
