Interest in Magpie Dane Swan has cooled, with Scott Pendlebury and Dale Thomas both out of contract higher priorities due to their age.

I doubt they would Leave but you can't be 100% sure

I'll keep saying this over the next 12 months, we will not lose anyone of any worth to that moronic AFL monstrosity.

Swan isn't going, I told you that already, and GWS have already given up on him, they will soon learn that none of the big names at Collingwood are "touchable", and they will give up, and end up taking a Goldsack type of player (fringe player) just like the GC had to.

I'm going to laugh everytime I see crap like this, Sheedy and his martians can throw everything at our players, they won't get them.

Thomas and Pendles are 2 country boys, who simply put, don't want to move interstate, and they won't.

Chasing money would come at too big a cost, for either of these two.

Would Pendles give up the opportunity to be next Collingwood captain, to be remembered as a mercenary at a plastic club...i give him way more credit than that.

Daisy is an icon at Pieland...and will finish up a legend most likely...again, does he really want to play in front of empty grandstands?

But, at the end of the day, it'll be their call and we can't really change what they do...so i for one, won't over-emote about this...if they go, they go.

And if they do, we'll be compensated for losing young guns of their standing ( not that that's our preferred option..it's a softener)

And the beauty of our club, apart from the culture and fan base, is the spread of talent...we depend on no single individual.

Let's learn from Geelong 's unhappy experience, and not have this distract us and jeopardise our season, we have another flag to concentrate on!

I would hate to lose players of this calibre, but with the money on offer, I could understand if they chose GWS. I can only hope that the lure of playing more premierships, the relationships they have already established here & the factor of "belonging" at Collingwood will keep them with us.

In a perfect world, all our players wouldn't be tempted to leave for more cash.
Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world, and here the almighty dollar rules.

The players are full time employees of the greatest football club in the world, but they are still employees. Gary Jr set the precedent regarding loyalty. His father is probably the greatest player to have ever played for the cats, Gary was brought up around the club, yet for a massive pay rise, he left. After 2 flags and a Brownlow. Our players already have a flag, with the possibility of more to come, but for almost a 100% pay increase, and given that they can't ply their trade for more than one and a half decades, their managers/financial advisers would be telling them to make hay while the sun is shining. If you were offered a 100% pay rise, to do the same job, would you not pack your bags and bolt? Remember when every Geelong supporter was saying, No way Gaz will leave? If GWS wants one of our players, I reckon it's at least a 60% chance of happening. Money talks here, Loyalty lives in that other world.

Maybe i'm naive here, but Ablett may have actually left for reasons other than purely money, from news over past few days...

I get what you're saying re 100% pay rises, but their lives will be 'richer' if they stay at the Pies, compared to leaving.

You touch on a good point though, and that is their managers.

They ( I'd imagine) get paid a percentage, and they would not be so driven by loyalty as you'd hope the players might be...so it is in their interests much more to persuade the player to take the higher annual salary, to boost their own annual cut.

Hopefully the players would be aware of this and realise that any manager driven arguments to leave, may well have more sinister motives.

I would tend to discount how much more the Giants can offer to our top players. Sure the contracts will be double the value, but guys like Thomas and Pendles are worth a lot of money in sponsorships etc.

And dont forget the long-term. Premiership players at clubs like Collingwood get their foot in the door in a lot of things....Michael Christian at Channel 10..Tony Shaw in the media...Daics selling his footys and Gavin Brown in coaching. They have all been helped because they are indentified with Collingwood. If young magpies fly off north, their early years will be forgotten and Melbourne will basically ignore them. They might get a good paycheck while they're playing but I doubt that they will make a quid out of footy outside of that contract...

And as others have said, they will be remembered forever for just one thing

Not that it means a great deal but both players got the Magpie tattoo after the GF as well which shows their support to the team. They're both key players and aren't starved of opportunity, so the only reason they would leave would be for money.

I think their names are just being thrown up because they're young, good players and are coming out of contract, but to me it doesn't sound like Sheedy is too interested in Collingwood players, and luckily he doesn't seem to rate them either.

GWS, just like GC before them have to cast a wide net and will be after anyone who can get a game at AFL level, just about everyone who is out of contract is going to be linked and GWS should be talking to just about anyone out of contract.

I feel confident Pendlebury will stay. He is one of our young leaders and will be guaranteed the captaincy after Maxy. Thomas has stated that he wants to be a one club player and, like Pendles, got a premiership tattoo (as mentioned). I don't think they'll pursue Swan as he may be out of that age bracket. If one was going to go I'd tip Thomas.

something to be announced in the next few months will go a long way to deciding what happens - the next TV rights contract will likely contain a huge leap in value, and combined with what the AFLPA are chasing, will provide the necessary leap in the salary cap. then theres the retirements of former mainstays of the side this year, so plenty of cash is available to encourage the stars to remain.

yes its true that GWS will also have the same increase, and so their offer can also grow, but when the package is sold to them, to remain at collingwood versus moving to GWS, it will be hard for GWS to top what the pies have on offer, both now, in the near future, and well into the future. the players have egos, and their egos will be stroked sufficiently at collingwood to remain forever.

and if any player does get attracted to the almighty dollar, all you can say is 'thank you for your services - we appreciated what you bought to our team - best of luck with your endeavours to find happiness in that shithole sydney - and when you retire, yes youll be welcome to come in for a beer and a handshake, but dont expect the adoration of millions that your current teammates will be getting'.

the cost of staying versus the cost of going isnt just the money.

I'm quite confident we wont lose anyone.

We're the biggest club in the country and now the best team in the comp. It is not common for stars to walkout on our club.

We won't be losing any of Swan, Pendles or Thomas.

GWS will have to look elsewhere.

Reality is that the money is such a massive difference that all targeted for the big offer are going to be close to leaving. I could see our guys knocking back an extra 100k a year which is impressive, but knocking back an extra 400+k a year I think is near impossible.

All players come into the AFL with an expiry date and would consider themselves lucky to have a ten year career. An AFL career is all consuming and they dedicate their lives turning their backs on other opportunities. They're well paid for it, but they're forever just one injury away from it all coming to an end. And then what are they going to do? Can't all be coaches or in the media.

So I can understand why a player would choose to take a significant contract from GWS which would set them up for the next couple of decades.

I hope they stay, and ideally the GWS will raid all the clubs that could become potential challengers in the next 3 years. If a player does choose to sign with GWS we need to handle it better than what clubs did last year to ensure it doesn't distract the focus on the premiership.

A big thing these guys will consider is big $$ but moving to western Sydney.

It just doesn't have the attraction as big $$ and moving to the Gold Coast.

I'd think the club will be focused over the pre-season to resign all 3 in question.

If they haven't resigned by the start of the year, then I'll start being concerned.

This. I like peoples optimism but no matter how much they might like it at Collingwood if they are offered enough money they will leave, nothing surer. Anyone trying to console themselves with lines about WSYD being a bad place to live (Seriously, it's not freaking Mordor out there) or missing the adoration of our supporters o) are just fooling themselves.

can they take a player from the same club at the end of 2011 and 2012? I think the three will stay. Swan would be the only one of those three who might go. Others who I reckon would entertain the idea would be Goldy, Cloke, Reid/Brown, Wood

It's going to be a long year if you're going to worry every time a Collingwood player is linked to GWS.

I can see the lure of the GC, but not so much the GWS at this stage. I don't mind their orange, charcoal and white guernsey. That's about it.

We will lose a player, but it'll be another Fraser like scenario.

Thomas and Pendlebury are yet to really leave their mark on the club, Ablett had left his, plus we're finding out about a pretty serious little tiff between coach and player there.
