Society/Culture Has cancel culture gone too far?

You’re wilfully ignorant on this.

How so? Correct me if I'm wrong but some people somewhere believes this is the case because a caricatured cat is somehow black, and have taken offence from a racial perspective even though that is not the intent of the cat.

if that is correct then how am I being 'willfully ignorant' ?

So you haven’t looked at this at all.

This is not the image they had an issue with.

Actually, yes I have. The objections to The Cat in the Hat aren't based on one image, rather:

Although less explicitly racist, the main character owes a debt to blackface vaudeville, and was based on a black woman who worked as an elevator operator, said Philip Nel, a professor of English as Kansas State University.

"Owes a debt" is so vague it's almost meaningless, and so what if the Cat was based on a black woman? That doesn't make it racist.

I get some of the Seuss criticism, I really do. "If I Ran the Zoo" contains pictures of caricatured black men and the line "helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant", which is clearly problematic.

But I re-read The Cat in the Hat last night, casting my eye over the images trying to find something and it just wasn't there.

Another one that's in the firing line is McElligot's Pool. I looked at that one too and this is the only page that could possibly cause offense:

Even then, you'd have to be pretty thin skinned.

Some people somewhere.

So long as YOU don't have a problem with it, that's OK?

Not seeing it. Racial caricatures of black people usually have exaggerated thick red lips, curly black hair and primitive clothes. If they're really racist, add in a bone in the nose and a bongo drum or similar. And they're also BLACK.

That is the criticism.

The bit I found the most bizarre was this:

The characters of The Cat in the Hat are:

The titular cat (black and white)
Sally and the unnamed narrator (both white)
Mum (leg only, presumably white)
The fish-in-the-pot (orange)
Thing One and Thing Two (non human, drawn as white with blue hair)
Little Cats A through Z (black and white)

How anyone can get racial stereotypes and be offended by that is beyond me.
ONLY way is if you open the book with the preconception and go looking for it. Utterly pathetic.

How so? I can't see it happening. They are smart enough to change. Hollywood as a place where movies are made? It takes hits because of how expensive it is but the people making the films are still in that vicinity.
Never been there huh?

Ant Middleton grovelled his way out of calling BLM rioters "scum" and comparing them to members of the English Defence League.

But his comments on Covid-19 were a step too far for Channel 4, which was originally conceived as an alternative to the mainstream TV channels.

Am I still out travelling the world? Yes. Am I still shaking hands? Yes. Am I still cuddling fans at the airport? Yes. Am I washing my hands and keeping my hygiene to a high standard as always? Yes,” he said. “Has my life changed? No. Am I going to let some disease, COVID-19, dictate my life? Absolutely not. Get out there, don’t change, fu** COVID-19!”
A Channel 4 spokeswoman said: “Ant Middleton will not be taking part in future series of SAS: Who Dares Wins. Following a number of discussions Channel 4 and Minnow Films have had with him in relation to his personal conduct it has become clear that our views and values are not aligned and we will not be working with him again.”

Or maybe they finally had enough of a guy who's spent time in prison for bashing a female police officer to be held up as a role model to teach civilians about "courage" or "integrity" or "comradeship" or whatever BS this swindler wants to peddle.....

Here's a suggestion for those railing against "cancel culture"?

Since I've noticed those who are against "cancel culture" usually also tell us they are always in favour of "free speech" and the "free market", why not use those principles on the free market to create products and companies that counter the "woke PC left brigades attack on freedom" or whatever?

For instance you could create "Mr and Mrs Traditional Family Values Potato Head". They are wholesome, god fearing, church attending heterosexual potatoes who have three good wholesome bible believing junior potatoes. Mr Potato holds a steady middle class job, likes red meat, beer, socialising with the boys. Mrs Potato is a stay at home mum who cooks her family ever meal each day.

You can buy their Potato House, with white picket fences, nicely manicured gardens and LNP campaign signs located a clean middle class suburb with good private Christian potato schools which teach abstinence only sex ed and that same sex potatoes are sinful.

If the public are truly sick of "Cancel culture" I bet they'll flock to these toys. If not then the free market has spoken.

Will it stop the left woke set bangin on and on and being offended on behalf of half of mankind? Yes? Make a million of em.

What other toys are you upset about? I assume you still have your existing toys. Or were you planning on buying a Mr Potato Head sometime soon?

No good making a million of them if no one wants to buy them.

The free market is great in this area. If there really was a huge "Silent majority" out there opposed to "Cancel culture" then businesses would market their products to them. After all they only care about making money. No business would not market to conservatives if it would make them millions.

In reality the "silent majority" is always overstated. Most of the public have better things to do than join in with extreme conservatives with a megaphone. Most of the public will still buy their kids a Mr or Mrs Potato Head toy in the larger "Potato Head" toy line. They'll still buy "Cheer" cheese. They'll still buy Dr Seuss books edited to remove outdated caricatures. They'll still use the services of companies that supported same sex marriage.

Few months old now, but just checking where this sits on the cancel culture spectrum.

Ofcom will not investigate Diversity's controversial Black Lives Matter-inspired routine from Britain's Got Talent on September 5, despite viewer complaints soaring to 24,500 by last count on Thursday morning.

The performance has now become the second-most complained about television moment of the decade, but a spokesperson for the government-approved regulatory body has confirmed to MailOnline no action will be taken.
