No-one "worked out" where to bowl to Hughes. He was front-loaded with expectation. Like someone alluded to with Johnno, he was hampered from playing his natural game by an unneccesary and unhelpful obsession with this "problem" which basically scuppered him. When it's all anyone talks about is it any wonder the poms bowled there? It's a kind of psychological bodyline, if you will.

Shameful treatment, but it's past now, and instead of trying to undo the mistakes of the past we have to learn from them. On current form he just doesn't warrant it.
Of course he cant play his natural game, bowlers wont bowl it where he wants it, its up to him to change or be forgotten

Haha, some rippers coming from you lately champ. If this little pearler applied then **** me, all batsmen are doomed forever! We'll just stop putting the ball where they want it!

Talk about missing the point.

He didn't have a problem with short bowling. As amply demonstrated in South Africa. He had a problem with having a problem with short bowling.

That and the Strauss "catch", and some gutless selection.

Amply demonstrated in South Africa? Funny how South Africas own coach would disagree entirely on that point

People seem to be reacting as if England just got him out once and suddenly kept doing it, forgetting that they discovered it when he spent a while training and playing with Strauss in a move everyone before hand claimed was a genius idea :D

Interesting to note before his test debut he had averaged about 14 runs on any pitch that wasnt slow and low and he opened the batting

I love Hughes, and I've been one of his staunchest defenders on here, but I have to admit, I'm not sure if we can go with him when there are other players demanding a spot.
Who the hell is demanding a spot at Shield level at the moment?

  • Usman Khawaja (517 runs @ 64.63 from 8 innings) - Surely in line for a Test debut in Perth.
  • Shaun Marsh (339 runs @ 84.75 from 4 innings) - I'm a big fan, but most people seem to want to see him do it for longer.
  • Andrew McDonald (372 runs @ 93.00 from 5 innings) - Out with a broken hand at the moment, but would provide a handy economical bowling option too.

Yes, but unfortunately, that argument fails because that innings, you know, happened.
Or what about the fact that his last month or so has been average?

Including failures against England.

Or do you just overlook that because he plays for your state?

Since the spot was basically announced as being up for grabs immeadiately before the Ashes his form has dropped, he hasn't been able to produce a big score and has been generally disappointing.

He isn't even close to knocking the door down and a long way from demanding selection.
