Huh? Hodge was pick #1 in 2001. Mitchell was an awesome grab tho. 👍

Yeah we got the pick by trading Croad and McPharlin to Fremantle, and we got Croad back soon after, so it's effectively a trade pick up. We were a a post-width away from playing in the GF that year.

Yes but Hodge was the first pick in the 2001 super draft. Hardly a 2nd rounder.

Mitchell is the second rounder. Hodge was obtained with No.1 pick via trade.

So you have a second rounder, a trade for McPharlin, and a rookie as your starting midfield in at least two flags. That's Hodge, Mitchell, Sewell. Langford, a rookie selection replaced Sewell in 2014.

Strange reasoning. Pick #1 is really a second round pick? WTF?

Fixed it for you.

With our unparalleled recruiting ability.

We don't need top picks to put together a great side.

Don't forget even Mitchell and Hodge were effectively a second rounder, a trade for Luke McPharlin, and a two year loan of Trent Croad. I think Luke Breust was some kind of rookie selection(one pick after your Allwright). Liam Shiels was a second rounder (one pick after your Tom Gillies). Suckling was a rookie. Duryea was the last pick in his draft. Sewell was a rookie.

You need amazing recuitment to win 3 in a row. :trophy::trophy::trophy:

:$ :$ :$ so......you're banking on priority picks again?

You also need a diluted comp due to expansion where drafting quality was impossible. You had to have the core list to begin with, which you got from being s**t at the right time.

Shiels is overs for a round two. Solid in a good team but once his cover left he just couldnt step up.

Who on your list do you think has trade value atm?

Drafting quality affects everyone equally. The other GWS/Gold Coast argument is supposedly that a bottom four side was denied a slightly higher draft pick, denying them a chance to somehow go on and challenge the premiers?

That's very thin, and likely sour grapes because a Melbourne team threepeated for the first time in living memory.

Hawfs handily avoiding the question about anyone at their bottom 2 club who has trade value.

Here, I'll answer:

The only thing of value at Dingley is the coach, but Collingwood don't have to give you anything when he goes there next year 🥳

Lots of trade value, particularly if you want to factor in IP. A valuable player like Gunston is also a smart cookie who could go into coaching or administration for a new club. We've been able to parlay even low picks into useful new players like Morrison and Lewis.

Yes, I'm sure clubs will be lining up for IP such as:

Recruiting sex pests
Getting the worst out of Chad Wingard
Selling the farm, including talent and future picks, for MOR recruits
Finishing bottom 4
Having to sell games interstate to remain viable
The Mysterious World of Pet Memberships
How to approach merger talks etc etc

If GWS joined the League in 2005 Hawks wouldnt have got Roughead, Lewis or Buddy. I doubt you would have been competing without those picks. You would have had to build a team around Beau Dowler.

You're assuming GWS don't go for Tambling like Richmond did. Historically that was the case, as they drafted just one very good player out of the top 5. GWS took luminaries like Patton and Matt Buntine out of the national draft. That's what all this is based on :$

Also Franklin and Lewis fell to Pick 5 and 7, which is more or less outside the GWS range and proves once again you don't need the absolute prime picks.

Then there's the fact that hawthorns threepeat started eight years later, which would be 2019 on GWS time. Outside the threepeat range quite comfortably.

Outside of GWS's range you say.

- Jonathon Patton (Scoresby FC/Eastern Ranges)
2. GWS Giants - Stephen Coniglio (Upper Swan JFC/Swan District)
3. GWS Giants - Dom Tyson (Oakleigh Chargers/Camberwell Junior)
4. GWS Giants - Will Hoskin-Elliott (North Sunshine FC/Western Jets)
5. GWS Giants - Matthew Buntine (Berwick FC/Dandenong Stingrays)
6. Port Adelaide - Chad Wingard (Imperials FC/Sturt)

Gee, port Adelaide missed out on Matt Buntine, Jonathon Patton, Hoskin Elliott, and had to make do with Chad Wingard.
I guess this saved our threepeat two years later from a bottom two side :$

Nice dodge.
