Start Date
When are we starting :D
20th was the original date, might bring it forward. Most people here are pretty active and the time limit isn't the most lenient. I'll say I will start accepting picks on the 17th (Wednesday), but the time limit comes into effect on the 20th.

Pick 1 - Jason Horne-Francis
Pick 1 - North Melbourne select Jason Horne-Francis from South Adelaide/South Australia - Midfielder - 184cm/78kg

Jason Horne-Francis wanted the number one title, he wanted to be the first selected on draft night and he's got it, etched into the history books.

The ultimate modern day prototype midfielder who has little to no weaknesses and all the attributes you want a from a player who you select with Pick 1. Horne-Francis is a quick, powerful, tough and competitive midfielder who can play on the inside and outside, he has a very good leap and possesses very strong overhead marking which makes him a threat forward of centre. He's also a threat because of his ability to read the play and game. But even then the offensive part of JHF's game isn't even close to the only thing exciting the AFL world. His ability with his defensive application is truly elite, tackling, run down tackle highlights and his strong one percenters game to protect teammates and also himself with his stiff arm.

One of the easier picks on draft night and their won't be a single North Melbourne fan who wouldn't be absolutely stoked to see this young man play for their club and join the rest of their current midfield talent.

JHF’s 2021 Season Highlights

Pick 4 - Finn Callaghan
Pick 4: Fremantle selects Finn Callaghan.

Essentially using the pick acquired in the Adam Cerra trade to move up the order and grab a player who looks to be his equal on talent and his superior in athleticism and potential.

Pick 5 - Josh Rachelle
GCS select Josh Rachelle.

I have gone for the kid from the Murray Bushies here for a few reasons. It was genuinely a hard spot to pick for where Gold Coast are at. I considered both the mids (Hobbs and Ward) and decided although Greenwood has left, they still have Alex Davies coming through as a tall first possession mid and they have Rowell in that space also, so the need for Hobbs isn't dire. Callaghan would have been my dream selection here as he can play that blend of inside/outside and is a point of difference to the current mix. But alas, predictably he was off the board. Andrew, I considered also for his potential, but in the end settled on two safer options. So I was essentially choosing between Ward and Rachelle. I think Ward would have complimented their existing mix really well, with his ability to connect with others at the stoppage. A mix of ward, Rowell and anderson is really balanced and dynamic. But I decided against it only because of the documented go-home factor.

So to my selection - Rachelle of the upper echelon appears to have the least go-home factor with legit high character. He has runs on the board with two years of performance and will add to the stock of match winners already on the books. He has more competitiveness and desire than Rankine and ultimately will be a good replacement when Rankine packs his bags next year. I like that he can pinch-hit in the middle and he would offer Goal Coast some class and finishing ability from their midfield. A safe selection, that might not be the most immediate need, but ultimately GCS need talent with high character that won't be searching for the exit in 4 years. This kid has a great head on his shoulders, brings competitiveness, excitement and skill to a youthful mix at the GCS...

Pick 6 - Josh Sinn
PICK 6: Adelaide select Josh Sinn.

With 1st choice x-factor player Rachelle off the table I’ve gone with Josh Sinn, who I see as a player that will eventually provide x -factor through the midfield at AFL level. Is a nice size, and has put on 6kg recently which will help with his transition from Half Back to the midfield. Blistering speed combined with exquisite kicking skills will provide the x - factor the Crows crave.

Pick 7 - Josh Ward
With Pick 7 The Hawthorn Football Club select...

Josh Ward - Northern Knights

I'll do my full write up a bit later, but no surprises from me here. While everyone seems to be wishy washy on Ward since the end of the season, he stands above the crowd in terms of consistent, effective input both offensively and defensively. His skills entering into the forward 50 are elite, and he can provide an outlet for our contested ball winners up and down the ground with his elite running. What I love about Ward is his improvement mentality, his defensive application but most of all his consistency and translatable game. He has very few question marks in a draft environment where we have had some prospects play less than 10 games in the past 2 years. The fact is Ward has the running, strength and skills that present a baseline of production higher than anyone else available. His goal sense forward is nothing to shy about, and I wouldn't be shocked (though I don't think it will happen) if he starts the season in the forward flank as a tagger/half forward while he builds his game.

Ben Hobbs is very, very close but I prefer Wards gamestyle for us. I have them pretty much equal in ranking, but I like Wards kicking and running more than Hobb's contested ball winning, marking and chiselled jawline.

Strapping Young Lad stop delaying your pick and trying to cook up trades, you're up

Pick 8 - Mac Andrew
Pick 8.

GWS Giants select Mac Andrew, from the Dandenong Stingrays.

Not going to bore you guys with a write up about a player we have all read a tonne about and the reasons the Giants would take him.

Pick 10 - Josh Gibcus
Pick 10.

GWS Giants select Josh Gibcus, from the GWV Rebels.

blackheart has St Kilda

Pick 11 - Nasaih Wanganeen-Milera
Pick 11 - St Kilda select Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera

Saints have had a great history of taking mid paced half-back flankers and then not knowing what to do with them. (Coffield, Clark, Long) So NWM will add some much needed zip and definite class amongst the midfield grunts.

Pick 12 - Neil Erasmus
Pick 12 WCE - Neil Erasmus - Subiaco (Half Forw/Midfielder) 188cm 80kg

went best available and fills a need for a big midfielder for WCE, great hands above his head and a good kick at goal which makes him a forward threat and then his read of the play and running good lines makes him a weapon in the midfield, he has a competitive confident personality which will help him succeed in the sometimes harsh environment of the AFL, had a great WAFL Colts GF last year, stepped up to dominate the Colts in the midfield as well as the Private School scene in Perth, unfortunately copped a cork before the state series.

PhatHQ you're up

Pick 13 - Jye Amiss
Pick 13, Essendon
Jye Amiss - key forward

At 13 with 2 WA boys to choose from that would fit the Bombers perfectly I figured I couldn’t go wrong. Don’t feel like I missed on Erasmus too much when I can pair a key forward with Harry Jones in the future and can have him develop in his first season with no real pressure to perform.
Was tempted to trade back but feel like a win in the first round with the only relevant pick was a no brainer. 2023 will be the year to see this kid take off once he gets a bit of weight on but a few game in 2022 is a given IMO.

Pick 14 - Matthew Johnson
With pick 14 Port Select

Matthew Johnson

Since Slick wasn't present, I've gone ahead and made this as the call. Johnson is a player many of us want and for good reason. A tall and classy mid, Port get someone who can take over the distribution and really give Ollie Wines another outlet for his contested ball winning. He's a smart player with great vision and good height. I also think at this point he was the best player available, someone with great upside who can be a part of their next generation.

Also strongly considered here was Sonsie, but I think he's a bit too much of a forward and I honestly think Johnson is just better.

Draper is another I considered, but again I don't know how much of a mid he is and I think that's what Port really want to be looking for.

Feel free to let me know how bad this pick is when you get on Slick

Pick 15 - Zac Taylor
Pick 15: Fremantle Dockers select Zac Taylor.

The Dockers have been blessed with genuinely elite mid/fwd talent over the past 15 years with Fyfe, Mundy and Sonny Walters the envy of every opposition supporter. Unfortunately, Fyfes shoulders are as stable as Kim Duthie, Mundy is soon to turn 49 and Walters has regressed faster than any player in the competition in the past 12 months.

With Finn Callaghan selected as a tall, athletic mid, Zac Taylor adds a skill set Fremantle will be sorely lacking in the coming years. An accumulator with footy smarts and clean touch, Taylor will offer Zach Merrett type reliability through the guts but also Dylan Moore smarts and craftiness up forward as a link up/goal assist legend.

A reach? Some may think so. I believe Caleb Daniel is an excellent comparison in upside for young Zac. There is no way Daniel goes so late in a 2014 redraft. Despite some vertical challenges, the sky is the limit for Zac Taylor in the purple and white.

Pick 16 - Darcy Wilmot
Pick 16 - Brisbane Lions - Darcy Wilmot

Tough call here and I strongly considered Goater but in the end I love Wilmot for Brisbane. Dashing half back flanker who is tough as nails with a style suitable for breaking through defensive zones. A player fans will love to watch streaming out of D50 taking a few bounces and delivering inside 50.

Fills a need here with Birchall retiring and Rich nearing the end of his career.

Pick 19 - Campbell Chesser
3 hours + … shall we pick for for Melbourne?

I have seen 3 other phantoms for Chesser, 1 for Owens (Chesser was gone) and 1 for JVR

so… Chesser?

Melbourne select : Campbell Chesser.

BurnaHawks I hope Chesser was on your list. You have until Bardo State picks to make a change

Pick 20 - Josh Goater
With pick 20, Geelong select Josh Goater

I think this is a great place to be able to take Goater. Unlike others, his issue with his disposal comes from not understanding how much time and space he has when he explodes away from congestion. At other points in games he has little trouble hitting targets, which gives me enough confidence to back his weapons. He's a great size and a superb athlete. He showed bursts of clearance play as impressive as anyone in this class.

Pick 21 - Jacob van Rooyen
Selection 21: Fremantle selects Jacob Van Rooyen

The Dockers have put plenty of work into JVR, and after selecting two mids with their first two selections will welcome the tall swing man with open arms.

Over to you Dominic03

Pick 24 - Arlo Draper
With Pick 24 Hawthorn select - Arlo Draper.

Arlo is a gun Half forward/Midfielder who puts his body on the line and is smart with his footy. A bit of a wiry frame has lead to him having a few injuries sideline him from the action, but I think he ball winning, smarts and agility make him an exciting prospect that fills a need we have for goal kicking mids.

Pick 25 - Sam Butler
Pick #25 - Brisbane Lions - Sam Butler

Hard to split Butler and Clarke at this Pick but I have gone with Butler. Exceptional pressure forward with outstanding tackle numbers and pace.

Butler has an AFL ready body and although might find it hard breaking into the Lions forward line initially, is probably only an injury or two away from playing next year.

Love what this guy brings defensively and has a knack for finding the goals.
