He is not a defender not agile enough. He has good speed in a straight line but can't twist and turn as effectively IMO. Its forward or bust and judging from yesterday he needs the boys to get around him because he has lost all confidence in himself
Think that is even more of an issue as a forward. He very rarely gets separation from his opponent. As a defender he may be able to follow someone a bit better

You need to be able to take an over head mark as a forward or a back and he cannot do either!

He was a defender for 2 years in the 2s and was supposedly pretty close to being delisted before a Hail Mary switch to forward line saved his career at the club.

Really can’t see it happening.

I think Kosi's issue is that he doesn't care.
Have heard from some internal people at HFC that he only plays because he is good and can earn coin. Not particularly interested in being the best he can, which is fine. Not every one has the same wants and needs.

If that's truly the case - he shouldn't be on the list.

Would rather free up the list spot to someone who always wants to be better.

Very surprised to hear that. Doesn't play like someone who doesn't care.

It’s interesting how much we all talked about the midfield being the priority, but their performance this year has been ok and given the age profile can only improve. Actually if you do a quick grouping, where I would create 3 mid types; game breaking talent, inside bulls and outside good users, interesting to assess our list. Outside good users I would have Ward MacDonald Mackenzie in that group, so seems well stocked. Inside bulls Newk Worpel Nash Maginness Stephens Long, so seems over represented. Game breaking talent = Will Day. Harley Reid would fix that group, or maybe Will Lorenz if we avoid the spoon would be another option from what little I have seen and read. would seem like we need to move on a few inside mids for balance. Newk and Stephens are safe, of the others I think Worpel and Maginness are at most risk because there is no evidence they can do anything else. with Finn it’s not even ball winning it’s pure tagging. Adding an elite mid would give us 9 mids rotating plus Moore and butler who can also rotate through, that seems like the core midfield of a contending team. Now how are we going to kick some goals….

Have heard the complete opposite and he really cares and works hard.

Long term this is how I'm viewing our list- players that aren't written here I just don't think will be involved with our plans long term/won't be around for our next premiership tilt.

Defenders that WILL be there: Cj, Scrimshaw, Hardwick, Sicily, Blanck, DGB
Defenders that MIGHT be there: Smitchell, O'Hara, Morris, Impey, BMac

Mids that WILL be there: Newc, Day, Ward, Mackenzie, Long, CMac
Mids that MIGHT be there: Worpel, Morrison, Nash, Stephens, Finn, Hustwaite, Weddle, Amon

Forwards that WILL be there: Butler, Borockman, Moore
Forwards that MIGHT be there: Ramsden, Jeka, Bennetts, O'Sul, Greene, Kosi, Serong, Lewis

Ruck merry go round aside, I'm reasonably confident in where our list is, but I think a couple things are apparent:

1.) we NEED another Key forward. Long term I believe Serong will be our mobile forward who gets up the ground more, but currently we've only got Lewis who has shown consistent impact. The reason I've got him in the "might" category is his body. The lad needs a good go at it without getting injured for an extended period.

2.) I'm confident in our Midfield rotation group long term and it's clear that Smitch is, too. I think it is vital for us that these players all learn multiple positions. My reason for not having Worpel, Nash or Morrison as "Will"s is because I think eventually what they offer will have to be offered by bigger/stronger/smarter players.

3.) Our defensive group is solid, but I don't think there are enough natural, lock down defenders in there. I'm confident Blanck will come on as will DGB, and I believe both these boys have natural defensive mongrel that the likes of Cj and Scrim lack imo.

Our list in the MSD:

I would love for us to add another KPP- even if it's a senior body that comes in for a season and a half, but provides us with a target to hit up forward.

National draft/trade period:

I actually don't want us to add through trades this season unless we can nab a genuine steal on the cheap.
(at this point in time) with our first pick we will get one of Harley Reid, Archer Reid or Daniel Curtin. All of these players I believe will strengthen our rotations and will drastically improve our list. Harley would ultimately become our game changing mid/forward, Curtin could be our long term bear in defense or up forward and Archer could do the same, but taller.

Dear and McCabe are two more talls we can add through father son, and Ned is allegedly a more developed version of where Finn was at at a similar age, if a little more slight.
Combine that with adding Cj's brother through the rookie draft and I think our list make up will be very nice

for the next few years:

I don't expect us to make finals in 2024, but I expect a large jump from season 2023 to 24, and even larger from 24 to 25.

Nice post, well thought through, cheers. I'd probably have Lewis as a forward who WILL be there, and I'd move Blanck to the MIGHT category. But that's just my thinking. :)

Fair shout- I'm confident this time next year both Blanck and Lewis will be staples in our side, I just want Lewis to get some consistency in his body before I lock him in!

Appreciated :)

The midfield delistings/trades will become interesting soon. To have rotations, we need guys capable of playing multiple roles. Maybe this group is kept together for another year, and the list changes come at either end of the ground.

Guys that I can see potentially being under discussion if we need to make room for new talent are:

Finn: most 1-dimensional as a tagger. Seems to be being developed as a lockdown defender too. Doesn’t have the skills to hurt the opposition as an outside mid, and not being given the role as a centre square inside mid. Currently getting games, but can see him being overtaken.

Worpel: almost exclusively an inside clearance mid. Being developed to play forward also. Needs more defensive strengths to be safe.

Nash: primarily a defensive inside mid. Would love for him to learn to take a mark as befits his size. Has pace and is a decent user, but needs to either find more football or take more marks.

I have Day, Newk, Ward, CMac, Frenchy, Amon and Morrison as almost certainly not up for discussion.

Long and Stephens will want to press their cases to break in for a few games this year, but both have some time I think. Hustwaite looks enticing and certainly has time.

Dont go counting your chickens on Dear or Maginness. Both look like longshots to be drafted at this stage.

It just does not compute. I am told strongly that it is a confidence thing. His self doubt is strong.
All that said, I am not sure he has the ability at CHF to compliment a premiership side. Just my view.

If confidence is the issue, then he / we could be encouraged by the performance of Chayce Jones at the Crows.

Two years ago his confidence was shot. He couldn't get near the ball and sometimes looked like he didn't want to. Then look at his game last night.

If Kozi has a turnaround like that, we could still have a player.

Only issue from my observation, is that Jones can finish, has skill. We were certainly interested a few years ago

i reckon bramble or morris will be gone...morris is far better than bramble every day of the week
lynch should be ok as we have little in ruck stocks
chad way too injury prone...all over red rover
kozzi may struggle but the heirachy might say we have tried and waited this long that we give him another contract
jekka...maybe his youth saves him?
we should put all our chips in the harry himmelberg basket in my view...what a top up to our list he would be

I would not be surprised if we finish the year with the worst percentage.
But I will be surprised if we finish in the bottom two. So I doubt Harley will find his way to the brown and gold.

Reckon it's a big shout for lynch to return to Collingwood end of this year.

He's clearly not in the coaches plans ATM and he would likely back up Cameron at the pies.

They loved him there and he left only for opportunity he isn't getting ATM.

Yep he must be frustrated. Good thing he is on out list so we might be able to get something for him. Rucks always hold value.

Yeah it would be pretty Hawthorn for a junk win in Tassie over the Eagles to cost us Harley, bit like how a junk win over a disinterested Gold Coast in 2020 cost us Logan. Can't be understated though what that win over the suns did for a culture.
