We'll want players other than picks unless it involves swapping picks, which may be on the cards also...maybe we swap our 3rd round useless pick for the end of 1st round pick that Hawks got for Campbell Brown....then we on trade that pick to Brisbane for Sherman?

With Brown going for Hawthorn, there is practically no senior quality in defence of any decent size, except for Gibson, who is a bit hit and miss.

Brown is 178cm tall. He is a midget. Him leaving would have nothing to do with Hawthorn desiring a tall defender any more than if Brown stayed. But I agree they could use a quality KPP down back ... everybody could. If Hawthorn traded their compensation pick to us, that would be the absolute best we can hope for.

So

Hawks lose their pick for C.Brown and gain Tarrant + 3rd round pick
Freo lose their 3rd rounder and Tarrant and gain Sherman
Brisbane lose Sherman and gain the Hawks end of first round pick

Looks pretty good to me.

CARLTON is poised to target out-of-contract Fremantle defender Chris Tarrant in next month's exchange period.

The former Magpie has come to the end of a four-year-deal with Fremantle and has informed the club that he wants to be traded back to Melbourne.

Carlton coach Brett Ratten said Tarrant could bolster a backline that looked vulnerable at times this season.

"If Chris is coming home and wants to come home, then I think he would seem to be a fairly good fit for our club and where we've got that deficiency," he told afl.com.au.

"What he's done to go back from being a forward and play on talls and smalls, I think his record over the last two years as a backman has been outstanding.

"Someone that could play at both ends would be preferable but I think we just need another tall defender."

Let the games begin :)

Why would Freo want Sherman? We dont need what he has ...

If anything I would be looking at Mitch Clarke or Drummond from Brissy, if not Hawthorn / Carltons 1st draft pick

There's more chance of Tarrant only playing another 20 games than him playing 60+ IMO.

I think trade time comes round and everyone puts their purple coloured glasses on. I wouldn't trade pick 18 for Darren Glass who is the same age as Taz.

Some important perspective, thanks Dom.

For a guy who said he was struggling to run out full games, for which the club had modified his training program a number of times and said he wasn't sure his body could go round again, I'd be astounded if he plays 2 years and astonished at 3.

Having said that, I enjoyed his play and I hope he plays well.

I think Mitch Clarke would be an ideal target...but I don't think Brisbane would trade him. Sherman is a good target as his run and carry skills would come in handy at Subi Oval.

I heard Harves say to the Media that we are after players instead of picks in the Tarrant trade.

I think the context of the comment is important. IIRC it was in response to a question that suggested the likely effect of the compromised draft.

When you think about it, we're going to end up with a number of spots available in the list total;

Solomon
Hase
Thornton
Headland
Tarrant
O'Brien
Hall

Other llikely de-lists;

Murphy
Schammer
Hinkley

That's 10 (ten!) changes. They won't all come from picks. Where are the good players going to come from in this expanding comp???

Four of our rookies have already been upgraded. As it stands right now we have 1 senior list spot available.

Out
Solomon
Thornton
Headland
Hasleby
Hall

In
Barlow
de Boer
Van Berlo
Silvagni

Tarrant, McPharlin, Mundy, Walters, O'Brien, Bucovaz, Dodd, Hinkley and Murphy are our other out of contract players.

Trade week - particularly what happens with Tarrant - will determine how deep we cut into the list this season. I'd be very, very surprised if it was more than 7-8 players though.

Note: If Schammer isn't traded we'll hold onto him until his contract expires next season. The club won't just de-list him.

I count 3 spots as of today; Tarrant, Headland, Hall and (apparently just announced) now a 4th, BoB.

Yes, I keep forgetting he is contracted. Wishful thinking on my part....

Tarrant to Hawthorn
Morton + 2nd rounder to geelong
Djekurra to fremantle

get it done

Geelong do very nicely, but realistically they will have salary cap issues next season (with or without Ablett) and won't want a player. More likely we would get Morton and Djekurra I think if all those things are in the mix.

Taz is a better than Glass though. I don't know why everyone compares Glass to Taz just because of age. Taz can also go forward if need be in a lot better fashion than Glass.

Would you right now prefer Glass on our team than Taz? I think not so why compare them?

Get it done. He's one of the blokes I've been hoping to hear some interest in.

Why would we trade for Djekurra when he will probably be delisted and nominate for the draft. See below.

but I was wondering if you think the Cats will retain Gamble and Djerkurra?

They'll both be delisted, help yourself. Gamble can play, just needs some backing.
