Now that Mundy is out of the equation for hawthorn, does anyone think Thornton will be a target?

If we could get their second round pick and on-trade to the dockers for Warnock that would be a great result and see Aussie get a permanent berth in the team and snare a KPP/small forward in the draft.

Not sure if he would attract a second rounder, and hes definately worth more to us than anything less though.

dont think the dockers would settle for the hawks 2nd rounder for warnock so unless you were suggesting our 2nd round+hawks 2nd round pick.

effectively thornton+pick 24 for warnock - too much imo.

in terms of thornton for hawks 2nd rounder - I'd want them to throw in a player that could contribute to our side going forward as well - muston or dowler perhaps? that might be being a bit greedy though...

With a carlton nomination, I'd hope any second rounder would be better than losing him in the PSD to Melbourne where I'd doubt he would have too many issues with to play with his brother.

We could possibly get more than a second rounder, but as Jeremias stated, their need is not as great as it was.

Would be suprised if they didn't enquire about him again. After Mark Williams performance tonight would find him pretty suitable down here but still undecided on what to do with thornton.

Should he stay or should he go

Hawthorn's second rounder is WAY too late. Some of you guys seriously underrate a 23 year old backman with over a 100 games of experience in the worst backline since Fitzroy.

I'd be asking for their first rounder (pick 15/16) otherwise I'd keep him.

They didn't bite in years previous for a first rounder, so I doubt we could hope for it now. Maybe I am overly critical of him but some games I felt his heart wasn't really in it; not that I can produce any examples though.

I'm with you, despite what others may think.

Every year Hawthorn have been after him i've been very anxious for Carlton to fight to keep him.

The first year he almost walked out i was devastated (he was our man backman at the time).

Last year i was annoyed again when the Hawks came after him (because i still felt he was critical to our team as only Jamison was coming through) and was pleased to see Carlton demanding a first round pick in exchange and shunning off Hawthorns Tim Boyle offer which would have been a terrible deal for us.

This year I'm more open minded, but am still a firm believer that he is a required player as our club. His experience will be more than important to our team when we begin to push for a flag in years to come.

That's because last time their first rounder was pick 6 in a 'super draft'. This year they will have a very late first round pick 15 or 16 - that IMO is fair for Thornton.

Thornton would get an early 3rd rounder at best. He's worth more to the club than what picks we'd get.

He's pretty average one on one guys, I wouldn't classify him as a KP player. He is better 3rd man up and running out of defence.

Big year for him he needs to win more ball as the 3rd tall.

Modern defenders need to win 20 plus stats per game if not they need to be awesome stoppers at the moment he is not a bad stopper and occassionally wins alot of the ball

I better get to an optometrist then...he never and i repeat "never" stops anyone...they fling him around on a number of opponents each week and they still seem to get away from him and kick multiple goals, this could be hard to see amongst all of his finger pointing and arguing with team mates and umpires trying to demonstrate how much "bad luck" he is having.

No accountability in every sense of the word in my opinion, always looking to blame someone or something else.

agree..

I agree with the above 2 comments as well but really who else do we have?? We must keep him as key position backmen dont just fall off trees!!! Our youngsters down there Bower and Grigg etc will be good players in the next few years but we have just been spoilt in the past with our previous backmen by the likes of SOS , Peter Dean , Doull , Mc Kay etc gee we have had some beauties down back and when you dont have them you realise how important to the team they actually are.

thornton is worth more to carlton than what they would get for him in a trade, doubt very much if the hawks would give up a 2nd round pick and the thoughts of getting a 1st rounder is totally dillusional !!
the hawks are very hard to deal with at trade time & are unwilling to give up reasonable trade picks you will find that if they do have any intrest in t/bird it will only be 3rd or 4th rounder which wouldnt be worth the trade
carlton are better off keeping him & perhaps gc may offer up their GOOD picks in a couple of years.

His season was poor, admittedly, but his start of the season was very good. Was voted BOG in the first two games plus was equal 4th in the B&F after 6 rounds (despite being injured early in round 6). Not sure how his injury hampered him for the remainder of the season, but he never did recapture that early season form. If he can go into 2009 and play as he did rounds 1-5, providing run from defence, he'll be a very valuable contributor to the team.

On another note, we're just beginning to shore up our defensive stocks. Better to have a surplus of defenders than not enough. Wouldn't be willing to trade away any of our key defenders (bar the obvious i.e. Saddington), regardless of whether they're in our ideal starting 22 or not.

Didn't beat anybody? Were some of you guys asleep before he injured himself vs Adelaide? He was in a great patch of form, beating every one of his opponents - including Brown, Didak and Koshitskie.

Thornton is not a KPP, so if you are going to put him against the big forwards more often than not, he will get beaten. But he has some nice scalps along the way, is our most experienced defender by far and provides great rebound. He is not the lone man down back anymore, but we would be a weaker team without him.

Nicely said, his earlier games of the season were terrific. We're building one of the best young backlines in the league, he is very much apart of it!

With Croad getting older, they would be desperate for an experienced tall defender. They were interested in T-Bird a couple of years ago, so who's to say that they won't be interested again.

They are developing Thorp.
