Haven't read through 30 pages, but I am guessing that Maggie's family has something to do with the whole thing. Her father seems well-off in some way, and she happened to break up the investigation. Her daughter seems messed up by some sort of experience in her childhood.

Hopefully this isn't the case because then it will be a let-down when it actually happens.

I have to re-watch the first episode.

hahaha i was thinking the same thing. only 3 eps in and im not at all helped by McConaughey's insistent mumbling and whispering.

On a side note Alexandra Daddario is hot....and i thank her for getting her gear off!

If its Maggie's family, the catch up with Marty & Maggie last ep doesn't ring true to me...if the Father in Law has something to do with it, I cant see Marty sitting there having a chow down cup of tea with the Ex...he would be yelling at her from the front lawn....surely?

I just cant get my head around the figurines scene and where that falls into with the two girls...its too yuck to contemplate and they obviously have seen-heard-been told something that they shouldn't have seen or know about.

This would've occurred before Marty has found out - assuming it happens in the finale.

Anyone else think that lawnmower man might be peripheral to all of this? I mean, associated with the guys in question, but not one of the main protagonists. Almost like the village idiot rather than something else.

Maybe but I caught the end of the last episode on replay today and really noticed how he changes his voice after the police drive off. He's all inbred redneck giving directions and then bringing up his family, the cops stop listening and drive off and he sounds completely different when he finishes by saying aloud to himself that his family have been there a long time.

... Then he goes back to mowing his spiral in the grass

Yes, he's not important enough to cover up in the big scheme. Perhaps he may have gone 'rogue' and started on his own rampage with the initial murder, but I doubt he's the big fish.

As for you comment about the 3 Rusts in the B&E scene, I think it was used to illustrate how scattered he was - it was at this point he mentioned the "knowing he may have lost his mind" comment and I think that was what that shit was trying to show. If you remember his drug flashback he had, it reminded me of that.

It's funny how you can search for symbolism, I watched episode 7 again last night and became infatuated with the brand of beer they're always drinking (Lone Star), what that could represent: solitary lawman, saviour of the wild west etc. Didn't start doing that kind of stuff with this show until I began overthinking after reading all the garbage on the Internet.

I mean, lawnmower man might even be harmless.

Yeah, I know why they did the shot, just felt it was out place.

If anything I think he's like some sort of errand boy that abducts kids, and then more important people are involved after that.

Did you feel his drug flashback was out of place?

Nah, just scene stuck out for me. I've loved all the DOP, art direction and attention to detail. For some reason, that shot annoyed me!

I think Lawnmower Man is the trigger man, if you will. Very unlikely he's the brains behind the whole deal.

If there is to be a twist it would be that he is the Yellow King and the main man, he seems as though he is an inbred idiot, if he was the main guy it would be a twist (kind of like Primal Fear).

I doubt it though

I love the symbolism that's been woven through the show. In some shows it might point to the answer, I reckon in TD it's mostly just texture. It's obviously deliberate, kind of intellectual games, but I doubt whether all of it will turn out to be anything more than textural art direction.

I don't think running a backwater cult preying on the young and destitute would require great intelligence. Powerful connections would certainly help though.

Well according to this article, they chose Lone Star for the simple reason that the brand allowed them to (which kind of implies that other brands turned them down or something). Interestingly, they also reckon that the spiral in Marty's house was an accident and that no one noticed until it was too late. Also, Big Hug Mugs are going for up to $80 on ebay now.

Good article. Thanks for that.

Great article in the Guardian about the series.

I love this quote:

Viewers noticed. Theorizing, research and speculation reached a fever pitch, and then a minor character, last seen cutting grass way back in episode three, drawled “My family’s been here a long, lo-ong, time,” and more appeared. (Chekhov’s lawnmower? Don’t forget that Rust mows the Hart family lawn and the preacher drinks from a John Deere mug … )

Chekov's lawnmower... hahaha

Great article...outside of this thread I haven't come across anyone else watching it, so it does start to make you go a bit nuts trying to figure out what it all means, this helps, thanks!
