Soundtrack perfect as always with this show.

The score is great. Reminds me a lot of LA Noire. Has a real pulp feel to it.

My biggest concern for this season was going to be the direction from the guy whose claim to fame is Fast and Furious, but so far so good. Still has the same feel as season 1.

I can see why the critics weren't raving about it, because compared with episode 1 of the first season it was a bit of a little weak start, but when you have 4 main characters to set up you can see why they had to dedicate the whole first hour just to the introductions. No doubt the story will pick up and Nic Pizzolatto has earned the right to be trusted.

I don't expect this season to get near the first season - Rust Cohle will never be replaced and the faceless, monster serial killer angle has much more intrigue to me than a "dodgy business dealing/gang-related killing" story - but that's ok; each part deserves to be judged on its own merits exclusive of the other seasons.

Solid start, nothing special yet but the story should open up in episode 2.

I loved it. For the life of me I can't understand how so many people have issues with "slow" tv, or "slow burn". Do they just expect explosions and gunfights all the time?

The reality is, for the payoff to be really good, it needs to be set up.

The tension is there, you can just sense the fraying of the characters, and I kind of liked the way they all met at the end, and the symbolism of that. I'm fascinated to see how the disparate threads will be woven.

I said to my wife whilst watching it: "I just ****ing love how tv these days doesn't take you for an idiot. It doesn't spoonfeed you. I have no idea what's going on, but I know it will come together". We spent the first half of the episode trying to work out what year it's set in. It doesn't assume you're an idiot and give you blatant glaring clues and I ****ing love that

Season one was a hard act to follow, impossible probably given it set the bar so high, but if season two maintains the quality of last nights opening episode I'll have no complaints.
Everything came together beautifully, story, performances, fantastic Cinematography and score, couldn't really find fault with any part of it, so good I watched it a second time an hour after it finished.

Some shows can also try too hard and seem forced, felt like that to me.
The only shows that I've ever been grabbed by from ep 1 and been on the edge of my seat for the next ep are Sopranos, True Detective and GoT..and they pretty much had you from hello..no shadowy scenes or fancy pants semantics, just in your face BANG this is gonna be a great show. Everyone raves about McConaughey but it was Woody Harrelson who won me over from dot with his straight out acting and in your face character.
Season 2 might turn out good but its all a bit smoke and shadows behind the windows to me atm

agree ... its with held some info, whether it fills in the gaps later on or leaves it to the viewer to come to their own conclusion…I think this becoming a a deliberate ploy for shows, as it creates discussion and theories online thus created more interest and buzz :

I agree with this.

I think the writer's have got too carried away with the success of the Rust character. What made him good was the dynamic between him and Marty. Rust would say something cringeworthy like "I don't sleep... I dream" and Marty would look at him like he was the weirdest bloke on earth.

This season hasn't got a Marty to counteract the middle school edginess yet and I don't think it will. Instead we have 3 actresses/actors trying to ape McConaughey and create an iconic character in the exact same vein.

I was surprised that they went for Nick Cave at the end instead of Linkin Park.

Thats how it felt to me, trying to hard to make lotsa little Rust characters and a deep and tense atmosphere..it just came completely natural in the last season. I'll watch it again a few times, I did enjoy the acting for the most part and I'm sure it will get better but yea needs some simple down to earth stuff and less dimmed lights and yellow faces.

I'd agree. I think in hurricane that was Rust, Woody got overlooked. He was fantastic.

I hate how Foxtel have taken to showing previews now before the end credits. I never watch previews (why would I when I have every intention of watching the thing next week anyway) but sometimes I like to hear the credits song out without having to fast forward an ad first. Such as when it's a Nick Cave, as a random example.

here she is at work, she's so pretty

Made the show imo..its the characters that grab you from the beginning, the strength of the acting and the excitement of seeing somethng a bit different and new. So much tv is now same old same old blah blah but every now and then you get one that just effortlessly pulls you in and doesn't need strange lighting or gimmicks. I will always think of Harrelson as Marty now, so strong was his role. McConaghey was superb too but just a little too OTT and drawn out.
I can honestly say the characters last night did not draw me in but time will tell.

The girl that Viagra dude was with was she the missing sister or just looked similar?
I got the impression she was. I also wondered if the photo of the rapist was Mr Blue Pill - I haven't gone back for another look to check though.
