It was as solid an opening as you could hope for. Good setup for the series (with the characters meeting at the end) and has given us enough back story for each of them to care. My two concerns were as follows
- Vince Vaughn, i didn't like him or buy his character. He need to get alot better, very fast.
- Are the characters irredeemable? Too early too call but last season they were immediately likeable if horribly flawed. Farrells character seems to be the most concerning. His motivation is fine, but the way he spoke to his kid and beat up that Dad... Gonna be hard to like or care about him.

I thought that at first. Then decided that it wasn't her.

The apartment was just way too set up for her to be missing.

And it was her apartment - 'When are you going to spend the night?'
I must say I thought it was her.

It was pretty obvious to me that her and the motor bike cop where only pretty recently together. She appeared not to have seen his scar burns before?

McAdams was good not sure where they are gonna take her story yet. Enjoyed the interaction with her dad and even though his character was a bit cleche I liked they showed he still has a bit or a normal side. Plus he gave a pretty good smackdown and insight into her at the same time. Had some good dialogue there

"Talk to your daughter prick, help her"
"I just did"
:D

I liked McAdam's dad, that's my kind of crazy. Hope we get to see a lot of him.

Farrell's character looks like stealing the show this year. Not as sympathetic as Rusty last year but looks every bit as interesting.

I see what people are getting at with them trying to cram in a bunch of Rusts though. When McAdam stumbled out of the bar all f**ked up it felt a bit samey to me. Her first scene was a cracker though, I loved it. :D

regardless of how the show turns out, i have a very strong feeling at the end i'm going to be thinking "it wouldve been better if pizzolatto didnt consider himself a profound, philosophical poet"
That pearl of wisdom about not acting out of hunger (or something along those lines) not even when literally hungry really took the cake. Cannot believe nobody pulled Pizza dude over how crigeworthy, pretentious and ridiculous it sounds.

Rusty was an aloof weirdo at the start that fit in like a fist up a nostril, slowly twirling around and around like an ice cream on a stick above a puppy in a crib, watching and watching.

Rusty was a great character progression, those two bleed into each other during the case until they became the other. It was awesome.

I know a lot of people in this thread don't feel that it's fair to compare it to season 1, but I think it's impossible not to. And for me, it comes up well short. The characters aren't as special, the basic storyline isn't as compelling, the locale isn't as engrossing and the dialogue doesn't come close. Hell, even the opening credits song isn't as good!!!

My biggest frustration was with some of the clichéd scenes. The one that took the cake for me was when Vince Vaughan's character took the glass from the Russian. I was willing him not to throw it against the wall. But then he threw it against the wall. Surely there are other ways to show someone saner getting the better of them???

BUT ...

Season 1 was one of my favourite TV series of all time. Lots of people found flaws with it (particularly the ending), but I loved everything about it, so I knew this new season would never live up to it. Also, I quite enjoyed this first episode, I just couldn't help but compare the two.

Was just coming here to post something like this. I don't get the 'you can't compare it to season 1' stuff at all - of course you can (and should), different story yeah but its the same show and they're obviously going for a similar aesthetic.

Thought it was a pretty solid start without doing anything too spectacular. Nice to have the aerial landscape shots back, still cool but the setting does lack a little something compared to creepy rural Louisiana. McAdams and Farrell were pretty decent, dunno about Vaughn and Kitsch yet they haven't really had enough to do so far. Also feel the central murder mystery lacks a bit compared to last year (land deal corruption vs ritual/satanic) but that's just personal preference I guess, I liked the preternatural stuff in season 1 whereas this looks like it will be played with a bit more of a straight bat.

Anyway feel like I'm being too harsh on it, looks like a good show. Just goes to show you what a case of 'lightning in a bottle' season 1 was. It was a monster from the very first episode, for me anyway.

This season hasn't got a Marty to counteract the middle school edginess yet and I don't think it will. Instead we have 3 actresses/actors trying to ape McConaughey and create an iconic character in the exact same vein.

Yeah agree with this, strange move going for 3 so obviously broken characters with no 'straight' man to play off. Although I guess you could argue if there was it would be trying to ape the season 1 dynamic and that would be weird too. But yeah can't help but feel it will get somewhat old after a few episodes.

What always annoys me about that is the Russian would have still been only two metres outside the door and would have heard everything.

Not the wisest way to express emotion that you are trying to hide from someone.

No harm in critiquing the episode though, surely? Obviously it's going to cop unfair scrutiny because of the first season, but most shows are judged episode by episode.
But people already saying things like "it's not close to season 1" are being very foolish IMO.
