agree the show has a few issues, Vaughn isn't working (& imo the article below pretty much nails why) but the story is working for me so far, see what happens.

Why Vince Vaughn is the worst part of 'True Detective' Season 2

The article says 'very little of it is Vaughn's fault', by what it's really saying without being too harsh about it is Vaughn doesn't have the range as an actor. I guess he's not being helped by the writing in spots. Also don't know if I agree with the central thrust of the article about the best bad guys being largely kept of screen - thought season 1 Daredevil's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) was the best screen villain I'd seen in years and he had almost as much character development as the hero.

...well go figure...I thought Vaughan's character was a sympathetic **** up...not a baddie like the article says...is the writing that bad that I have missed the point that he is a bad ass? I thought the rat scene underpinned the vulnerability of someone losing an empire?

reckon he has definitely been portrayed as a badass trying to turn good with his russian mafia connections, corrupt cop on his payroll, had that dude beaten up getting the message out there about his missing money

I think its more the mind mess that is driving on the other side of the road and finding exits etc.
First time I ever drove in LA I found it much easier than driving in Sydney (and I'd lived in Sydney). I'd gotten used to driving on the wrong side in Denver driving a manual, when I got to LA it was an auto convertible - I found the driving to be a piece of piss!

I immediately thought of Fisk as well and think about things like Ledger as the Joker or the wire. Giving 'bad guys' screen time is fine you just have to do it correctly

i'm surprised they havent gone more over the top with that stuff already, actually. after the reaction that type of background image got last season i expected them to go into full on troll mode.

plenty of time left, though.
Yeah. After last season where the killer turned out to be some incest-loving, strange-English accent-speaking, singlet-wearing backwater hick and none of the speculated 'sub-plots' went anywhere, when all the deliberately placed background clues were pointing to something much deeper and darker, I wouldn't be surprised to see more of the same this season in spite of the reaction of last season. Hopefully the conclusion isn't as underwhelming this time.

In the therapist's office

The gunman was wearing a creepy mask that is similar to the image in the framed picture behind Farrell.

That therapist is as creepy as ****.

Enjoying the acting and the storyline that will unfold. Woodrush's burns and attitude is ****ed up after his experience in the military.

Huge fan of Morse who popped up as Ani's hippy Dad.

I've been watching off the back of series 1 which was basically the best TV of all time

It was always going to be tough to match series 1... thought Vince Vaughan would be a disaster casting, but he's been pretty good.

Thought that the first two episodes had too many rapid, intertwining threads... then ep2 went full bat **** at the end

I'm now hooked

The artciles doing the rounds about the 'real town' of Vernon, which what Vinci are clearly based upon are interesting. Talk about corruption.

From the LA Times:

"Enter the second season of HBO's "True Detective," in which the murder of the city manager of the fictional town of Vinci is a major story thread. Even if Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the series, didn't already say so, it would be hard not to see that Vernon was the inspiration for Vinci. The water tank that looms over the industrial faux town with the word Vinci is perhaps Vernon's most distinctive landmark, along with the mural-tattooed Farmer John plant."

Really digging this season, unsure of why it's copping flak. It's a slow burn, which I like cos I have patience as long as the story is presented well.

That opening scene was awesome with the Elvis impersonator dude. Farrell is a star. Liking Kitsch as well. I've always rated Vaughn dramatically and although he's not quite shining here... I think his character is building nicely.

That was the best structured episode of the season so far.

The VV character was fleshed out much better. You can feel his stress and his desperation to maintain control.

Question: who was the dead guy in the pit? One of his crew I take it? I couldn't place him.

**** this season is awful. In respect of the first season, I'm trying really hard to find something to date that has invoked any semblance of enjoyment.

It's like they had no idea how to follow up the first season so they've taken elements out of 90% of cop dramas.

Featuring your favorite generic characters:
  • Cheesy corrupt local cop
  • Estranged ex wife
  • Tough, empowering female lead who don't need (and can't chase) no man
  • Token closet gay/ war veteran
  • Drunken bumbling mayor
  • BDSM pervert dead guy
  • Organised crime leader who lays all of his eggs in one basket

So far the dull background of industrial California has more character and personality than any of McAdams, Vaughn, Phone Booth or Tim Riggins.

What? If that's the case every character that exists is a generic character.

Hart- Macho cop who cheats on wife
Rust- Damaged narco who numbs his existential pain with drugs
Maggie- Estranged wife who can't stand the distance with her husband

If you don't like it that's fine, but you're purely nit picking for the sake of it.
