MELBOURNE DEMONS!!!
In English, we're doing "the club" which most of you would know, relates to footy.

Anyways, as apart of the assessment for it, one of the questions is "does our country care too much for sport, rather than other issues?"

So I want to know what you think. If you write written replies, I may use it in the project, so I’m asking for your permission now... if you could reply or even just answer the question, it would be very helpful!!

Thank you!! :)

I reckon its what makes our country great!! If Australia goes to war with Iraq (inevitable) the only thing that will push the headlines off the front page of the paper is , say, "Aussies win the World Cup" or "Shane Warne gets life time ban". Now that wouldnt happen anywhere else in the world.
You just have to look at how many Australians of the Year are sportsmen (and women) to see how seriously we take it . Of course if they get too big there is always our national sport of The Tall Poppy Syndrome, to chop em back down to size.
Hope this helps.;)

Agree, sport is number one here, if war breaks out tomorrow, it will be pushed off the front page, by a story about an athlete taking drugs his Mum gave him. :D

Just have to look at this forum, during footy season the board that gets the most use is the footy one, the others get little traffic, but during off season, well look at the various forums at the moment.

It may be a mistake to think that 'The Club' is about sport as such. It could also be interpreted as being about power structures. Maybe Williamson is using the instantly recognisable footy theme as a metaphor for life?

The play is also an insight into the Australian psyche, in which he is examining our obsessions. Best advice I can give is to see a live performance, if that's at all possible. It's about the words and the wit therein.

No, we dont care 'too much' about sport.

Simply because the average person is too ****ing stupid to comprehend political and financial consequences on the world scale.

Sport is a suitable diversion to make the majority ignorant.

the US simply doesn't make people vote, its simpler, but not as much fun.

I don't think we, as Australians, care TOO much about sport. We just care about sport.
What makes it great is that it brings Australians from all walks of life together to care about the same thing.
I once wrote an essay on football supporters.
It's like a secret little club....it helps strip down a lot of barriers for people...because at the end of the day everyone wants the same thing.
People want their team to win. A co0nversation about the weekends football does not imply antthing about socio-economic status. You hear people talking about the exact same thing....'did you see that mark?' 'how good was that goal?'
Sport is about comradeship and I think it's excellent that Australia focuses so much on sport.
It helps bring the nation together at times.

I liked Fitzy's Eyes's contribution about sport being what brings us together. And, unlike in some other countries, it brings us together in a positive way - we don't need 3 metre wire fences around the MCG (except around a construction site) or crowd segregation and there won't be riots in the streets after a game.
And it's far better we concentrate our interests into something positive like this than into racial or religious hatreds which dominate the thinking elsewhere.
