Essendon
who would you pick?
both players are playing half back, yet two completely different styles.
Yarran pick 6 in the 08 draft (looking like a Super Draft)
Heppell pick 8 in the 2010 (GC comprimised draft)
I have read where some Carlton fans say if Yarran has a few more Big games he would be in contention for AA.
Essendon fans think Heppell is probably our best kid in the last decade, and a huge chance for Rising star award.

EDIT - Both teams would probably not ever want to swap these 2 young players, which is why I think this poll will be very interesting.

Both Guns. Heppell is just that bit tougher at it though.

Heppell is a consistent player but Yarran's explosiveness makes him more of a weapon. Probably biased but I would take Yarran.

Heppell can read the play, Yarran breaks it.

Yarran.

If he can find the ball, 5 times out of 31 games he has 20+ possessions.
Heppell has already had 8 games with 20+ possessions.

Heppell has courage running back with the flight of the ball, 3 times already, Yarran's effort against Melbourne was a joke.

Heppell ducked out of that many contests against Carlton I wouldve sworn he was looking for chips on the ground.

Hes a young kid and will do that, as well as Yarran who is finally getting into the AFL system and getting a regular gig in the seniors.

Yarran would dance around Heppell that easily its not funny.

The only problem would be Heppell would have the ball.

Why would Yarran be making Heppell look like a fool without the ball.

I think you didnt see the name it says Yarran, he just finds it.

Yarran has the easiest job in footy. Sit behind the ball, designated user. When he gets any sort of attention (and i mean ANY) he becomes a liability.

Even Mathew Stokes kept him to 7 possessions, and he didn't even tag him for a full game.

Heppell wins his own ball which is important.

Two very different HBF Yarran is more your break the lines style and Heppel is your third man up who uses his good foot skills on the rebound.

I also think both players will make the transition to the midfield as they are both far too good in traffic not to.

Heppel coz I'm bias

why did you vote for Yarran, when clearly instructed to vote under Yarran - Carlton Fans

That video is so funny, better then the Gibbs one.

Heppell, is a better long term prospect, not as good a user but has courage in spades, seems to have a lot of time and is a good contested grab.

Heppell should become a class player of the Goddard/Hodge playmaking type rotating through midfield and half back.

Yarran could become a class midfielder as well, but he hasn't completely convinced me of that. He has the ability to, but we'll wait and see.

Heppell is a beauty. As others have said, courage in spades and reminds me of Kenny Hunter, who was a genuine champion and remains one of my favourite Navy Blue's. Nice spot by the Bombers for what was considered a "surprise" selection.

I voted Yarran though, as he has game breaking potential written all over him, especially the way teams are setting up now. The way he has moved the ball from defense through the middle of the ground to within 50 looks so effortless, but not many players have that ability. Just starting to get his confidence up really and will absolutely torn up the odd match by career's end. Sure he needs to develop his game, which is one of the reason for his move into defense, but those saying he can't win his own ball simply haven't watched enough of him.

Very little in it. Wouldn't trade Heppell out for Yarran, but wouldn't be surprised if (had we Yarran & they Hepp) my view was reversed.

Yarran great skills off both feet. Dunno if Hepp has a right. Heppell's workrate is already higher: he will chop off kicks, and then be involved in 2 or 3 more disposals in the one passage. That's outstanding for one so young. Has found a way to get involved when it hasn't been going our way, has performed just as well in tight games & losses

Defensively I'd go Hepp, basically because he's bigger & reads it over-head a bit better.
Kicking into 50 or around goals I'd go Yarran.

Comparing a 3rd year player to a 1st year player..

Says a bit for Heppell if he is even anywhere near Yarrans output after 1/2 preseason compared to 2.5..

Both exellent users of the ball, Yarran has the edge, you dont see Heppell take the wrong option or miss a target too often though..

Really at the end of the day Yarran should probably win this poll now, in a couple of years I think it might be a bit different..

And to the carlton poster who questioned Heppells courage and mentioned ducking his head vs Carlton all game, show us the vision, or give me a link because I must have been watching a different game.. Courage is a massive asset of his so far.. Just because he has blonde hair, doesn't mean he is soft.. Reminds me already of how daisy always got labelled soft when he has never/ will never be..

Right here mate.

I was at the game, and after both Dempsey and Windelich went down there as about 2 or 3 contests and he was running back turned the head, and moved off.

Its not a blight on his game, some of the most cougarous footballers have moments even when there a bit timid.

I was at the game and havnt watched the game on T.V it may or may have been on the screen but I wasnt the only one that saw it. Im just highlighting the fact that dont have a go at Yarran for one piece of play because every player for the history of the game can be found doing a similar thing.

We expect our Selwoods and such to be perfect in their quest for hardness and sometimes (especially for a 10 game player he is going to have his moments).

Essendon supporter beside me gave me the raise eyebrows and then told him not to worry about it.

Thats all you can do, but lets no get defensive about it.

Yazz.

Yarran does need to improve his one on one defending and go harder at times, but it not a concern. He's great overhead for a medium and just as good at reading the play as Heppell. Not sure that Heppell has Yarran's turbocharger. He dances around players in heavy traffic like he's the only player on the field. Uses it insanely well with both feet and without breaking into a sweat.

Yep, Yarran just has that little extra something which does it for me, even though I voted Heppell, I'd probably pick Yarran upon reflection.

he is playing the luke hodge roll off of half back loose man

Too early to say in my opinion especially considering Yazz has been in the system for a couple of years and Heppell hasn't.

Be interesting to see what people think when the two have settled into the positions they were meant to play and are at their peak ages (5-6 years).

In any case both exciting young players and looking forward to watching them for a few years to come and keeping getting a go in my supercoach team lol
