Highest scoring round in history

In the 80s it was just end to end stuff the whole time. By that stage the teams were working with reasonably fit players who had developed good skills. No chipping around and going backwards meant scoring on a forward foray was far more likely.

Seemed to me the higher scores peaked around 1992 or 93.
I think there was one season Blight's Geelong team scored over 3000 in the home and away season.
Never won a flag. An average defence rarely wins out on the big day in the end.
Once the extra interchange players came in to 3 and then 4 the flooding started to begin with use of rotations on the bench to allow players to flood regions of ground more the start of going the other way began.

The quality teams back then essentially backed each opponent to beat his direct opponent so it was your skillset v the other guy for most part. There was no real issue kicking to a contest because you were backing your own mate to beat his and when a skillful team played on instinct, with all their players in sync and feeling it, massive quarters of 8 to 12 goals for a team were not that uncommon. Now you essentially coached to not kick to any contest and kick backwards, sideways, anything but to a contest. Avoid it at all costs unless you got no other choice. It is interesting to see how much it can change in just a decade or two.

Still tend to think cycles in football so higher scoring will return at some point. However whilst the interchange system is still abused as a rotation system to allow players to just run and run and fill up space it is going to be very difficult to see many games of teams kicking 15 to 20 goals each.

It will never return to pure free flowing football it had in some parts but attacking play with some balanced defence is not too far away. I dream of it going back to 2 on interchange bench but not looking like any time soon. Maybe a cap on rotations down to 40 at max is the next best thing.

You should look at the 1981 WAFL Season, Jeez the lowest team averaged over 100 points per game. That's insane

Incredible year. Perth averaged over 100, yet still ended up with a percentage of only 64.97 after coughing up 157 points per game.

Ralph and Beasley both kicked well over 100, the Krakouer brothers were tearing it up, even a young Laurie Keene kicked 9 for Subiaco and that was a couple of years before Subiaco became a powerhouse.

If it wasn’t for some inaccurate kicking could have been higher. Saw many games with teams kicking 20+ goals and behinds, racking up 40 or 50 scoring shots total.

That Richmond game! Yikes!

What was the highest scoring round in history, in terms of average scores per game?

This is one for Ron The Bear

I was looking at some stuff last night and noticed that Round 11, 1984 was extra-ordinary. If this is not the highest scoring round the one that beats it must be amazing.

The lowest score was 13.13 by St Kilda, just look at the rest of the scores.

The Fitzroy vs North Melbourne game was insane, 166 to 152.

Can anyone remember this round and was there a reason for all the high scores. Was this the zenith of football?

I was at the Collingwood Hawthorn game at vfl park. The weather was perfect and every team was playing attacking football. A wonderful time to be growing up and loving the game.
