Have a look at some of these blasts from the past.
These are quotes that were off the mark, I have tried to include posters still around today, unless they are incredibly stupid.

Most of the quotes surround the doubting over Dane "No Weapons" Swan.

There's no point mucking around with false hope and mislaid potential - this is the season for the early write-off.

Thanks Dale Thomas for proving to Collingwood fans once again the ineptitude of our recruiters.

We are the only club that would take someone who drops 10m short in a set shot from 40m and misses one in the open from 25m at #2 in the draft, ahead of the silky skilled player every intelligent football judge expects.

THE SWAN FILES

MarkT said:
Pretty much my thoughts Hotpie. Should we have dropped him and left room for another draft pick or a PSD pick? In hindsight we could have drafted Gayfer. Swan is not the worst player we carry on our list but I can;t see how or why he will make it. Granted it's early days.

He's alright but I can't see him getting a spot in our midfield

FIGJAM said:
I think he can make it. Not in the midfield, but his capacity to play forward or back makes him a more enticing proposition. O'Bree's crumbing/goal sharking role could be an ideal position for him, especially with our number of tall forward options (Tarrant, Rocca, Morrison, Fraser, Davidson).

Figy I agree with your comments.

Swan will always be a fringe player, someone who gets a game if we have a deep injury list.
Nixon on the other hand looks like he will be a handy type. I think we will see him bought into the seniors later in the year.
Would be OK on a wing as he has a bit of pace.

The Scandinavian Swan is an interesting case.
He is versatile and seems to have it all. The only real weakness he has is his inside game but it isn't anything to worry about.
The problem is he doesn't exceed in any area. While he may be good at just about everything (speed, skill, marking, ball getting) it is hard to see in what area he will excell in.
This is why many people have been saying he hasn't got any "weapons". For example, Shacks weapon is his inside ball getting, Nixon's endurance and work in traffic, C.Cloke's strength and attack at the ball, Zane Leonards speed.
However it is likely he can become a good senior player to us.
Perhaps he can develop a few weapons.

Get out your cameras boys and girls, hopefully its the last time we see some of these players in a Collywood jumper again.

Messers Williams, Swan, O'Bree for a start.

LOKAN

jabso said:
Lokan looks the goods. He has speed, strength and can play anywhere on the ground. Is already pretty reliable and has been a suitable replacement for Johnno and Freeza. He could end up to be the bargain of the 2002 draft at pick 70. Great work Judkins!

Great post. Many of us jump on this sight and bag the crap out of the football staff for not knowing what they are on about but I reckon this proves how bloody hard the job is. We think we have all the anwsers but truth is we don't know squat

Fraser as a smokey.

I still reckon that Fraser will poll well. Had a good season and ruckmen have traditionally polled votes.

I'll go for Fraser as a bit of a smoky. Had a great season and ruckman traditionally poll well in the Brownlow.

I'm telling you at $81 at the TAB I reckon he's a good value smokey for the Brownlow. Rucks traditionally poll well and he's had a great season to date. You heard it here first.:D

Agree jabso that hindsight is a beautiful thing.:D

Good thread, good to see people putting their neck out with an opinion also. I mean, I didnt think much of Dane Swan while he was taking up list room and didnt seem to be going nowhere

Need a thread showing correct predictions, just so we know who to trust :thumbsu:

BTW, its not me

Myself on Dane Swan, 2004 and then 2005:

I've said a few times, he hasn't put a foot wrong when he's played seniors. Doesn't look out of his depth like some, last Thursday was no suprise to me. The question though is can he be more than just another 'Rupe' cos we all know what happened to Rupe.

Yeah solid spare parts man but no weapons. Perhaps a good player for depth. Would like to see him played forward more.

I think he has added two weapons - huge motor, and superb smarts and ball winning skills. One on one he rarely loses, great balance and very clever.

The last game against North he was trailling 5 metres behind Wells. He kept with him for pace, Wells didn't take the ball cleanly and next thing you know Swanny had it going towards goal.

Add this to a suprising turn of foot, and a good eye for goal and we have a very handy player.

When did you make that prediction? Before this season or during it?

I was making it from about the Round 20 until about 3 hours before the Brownlow.:D

If I'd been on the boards a bit longer, I'm sure there would be plenty more.:)

I emailed the club to see where he was. No responce. I know he had some trouble. Is he at trainning. He is good around the goals and he has got some speed which we really need.

Glad he came up with the goods. Some people even felt that Chad Morrison was better.

Where's the legendary quote "Cams the man" from MarkT?

:)

(not to mention the huge wraps he had for Damien Adkins)
Yeh, me and Shawry got Adkins wrong. Still a better list filler than the bloke we swapped him for. Shaw had him as the best player on the list in 1999 when they wouldn’t play him because he was too small. I think he was the only player on the list not to have played a game by the end of 1999.

Was that Cam quote talking up the Roccaless 2003 GF? I still would have played him rather than Kinnear but then again I’d rather have played almost anyone on the list rather than Kinnear. Anyway, I was a wrap for Cam early days. I though he was what we needed – a good big aggressive CHF. Cam might have been more of a chance had he not kept popping his shoulder but in reality he didn’t improve much over a 3 year period.

Still rather have an opinion than not.

Heard an interview after the Dog’s game early in the year. From that I concluded the difference was attitude. He was told he was on his last legs and he knuckled down. I still don’t think he has any outstanding individual qualities but he doesn’t have any flaws and has improved everything with effort.

Brilliant thread. I cant beloieve i rated a mention but these things always end up biting me on the ass.

I hope this one is brought up in upcoming years.

Danny Stanley is the worst recruit since Morrison/Hall.

Now for some of my quotes re Swanny ;)

Swan - KEEP. Like him a lot, looks a bit like Scotland and we all know that story.
30/8/04

Swanny's got to get a freakin' game first. The boy can play, but Malthouse is a moron and can't see it.
April 18 2005

Been saying it all pre-season - very good footballer, better forward but goes alright down back.
June 1 2005

Bugger Yakka and Shawry, get Swan in. Now.
April 24 2005

I've been on the Swan bandwagon since 10 minutes before the game up here last year when I said to my mates that I had a feeling he'd have a top game. He did, and i've been on him ever since.
