Hinge and Griffen Promoted Good Luck

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Good to see. Both lads made pretty good progress this year, and like Stiffy, I hope they really make the grade at AFL level.

That leaves us with the 5 picks in the national draft.

16,17,32,48 and 64.

Just as an aside, that's 12 changes to our list in the last 15 months since Craig has been at the helm.

Just about spot on IMO.

You wouldn't want to go with more than 5 pick anyway. Chances are we pick up 4 kids in the ND and leave one for the PSD unless there is a slider ala Knights or Johncock.

Craigy has turned over a fair bit of the list in his time here and has done it at the right sort of rate.

Congratulations to the boys, but I thought the logical decision would have been to promote Hinge, and leave Griffen rookie listed.

Meaning we could draft another kid, and Griffen could still be promoted during the season if need be, in place of Hudson.

It leaves our rookie spaces empty though, so there's not too much of a difference.

For those who have seen SANFL this year - where do Maric, Meesen and Griffen stand in terms of 'next in line' for an AFL spot?

In the order yo mentioned here. I do suspect that Griffin is more likely to get a go as a KPP than a ruckman at AFL level. He is VERY VERY mobile for his size and can take a reasonable mark. He is an interesting sort of player IMHO.

I honestly didn't see the reason for promoting one and not the other. Promoting both gives us more list flexibility IMHO. And if one of the rookies is performing well, then they can be promoted to the main list in place of Hudson.

IMHO, the AFC have gone the right way about it this time.

just a hypothetical for somebody to answer:

Would the rules have allowed us to:

- eg upgrade Hinge to the main list and keep Griffin on the rookie list thus giving us 6 available selections going into the national draft
- then at the national draft we decided to only use 5 out of the 6 picks thus leaving us with a vacancy on the main list
- at that stage (after the national draft but before the rookie draft) since we didnt use our 6th pick can we then upgrade (eg Griffin) from the rookie to the main list?

If the above scenario is allowed by the rules, then i would suggest that we should have followed that because it gives us the opportunity to pick up a 6th player (at the national or psd) if the unlikely scenario unfolded that somebody we really wanted was still available

Good call by the club. Promote them to the main list and have less picks in a mediocre draft. Both show a lot of potential, hopefully that translates in to performance this year.

In the rookie draft, fill up the list if required.

Its not allowed in a sense you are proposing.

- we could have upgraded Hinge and kept Griffin on the rookie list
- This way we would have had 6 picks in the draft
- We could run with 39 on the list rather than 40
- We could only promote Griffin before the start of 2006 season and no at the time you are suggesting
- You can only promote rookies to cover for long term injuries. You can't promote them to fill up a free spot on the list if there are no long term injuries.

Crows promote rookie pair

Adelaide has promoted rookies John Hinge and Jonathon Griffin to its senior list for 2006.

According to Crows football operations manager John Reid, the pair were impressive during their first season with the club.

“We were pleased with their progress this year,” he said. “Although they still
have plenty of work ahead of them we believe they add to our depth of young players at the club.

Hinge, 19, played SANFL football for Glenelg this year and at 187cm, played across half-back, the midfield and half-forward.

Griffin, also 19, is a 200cm ruckman who added 13kg to his frame this year and played senior football for Central Districts for the first time.

Chris Ladhams, James Begley and Mark Stevens retired at the end of the season, while Fergus Watts was traded to St Kilda. The Crows have already de-listed Matthew Smith, Josh Krueger, Jacob Schuback and rookies Rowan Andrews and Ryan Nye.

Rookies prove their value

Some young footballers take the highway to the AFL. Others have to find alternative routes.

For five Adelaide Crows, the detour was worth the time and effort.

Michael Doughty, Ben Rutten, Martin Mattner, Nathan Bock and Hayden Skipworth – who all spent time on Adelaide’s rookie list after missing out at national drafts – were valuable members of the Crows line-up last season, rewarding themselves and the club for the patience and commitment of both parties.

It is the sort of result that excites Crows recruiting manager James Fantasia.

“They have reached a time in their careers when there is a sense of belonging and they have the confidence to do what they are doing,” Fantasia says. “They are maturing as footballers, getting games and playing for their team-mates as well as themselves. And Neil Craig has shown confidence in them and given them support.”

At the end of the 2002 season Adelaide upgraded Rutten, Mattner and Bock to the main list after they had spent a year as rookie. Fantasia was confident the club was listing players who were worth top 20 draft picks.

“The year before they all had something to offer but it was too early to tell, so we put them on as rookies,” Fantasia says. “We knew this was a way to look closely at them for a year. Once we had done that, we were pretty confident they were as good as players in the top 20 of the draft and we now think that belief has been justified.”

Rutten, a former South Australian under-18 captain who had a knee reconstruction after the 2000 national under-18 championships, kicked three goals with his first three kicks in the AFL on debut against Fremantle in 2003. But in the past year he has made his name stopping goals in defence, where he has enjoyed the challenge of facing most of the competition’s biggest goalkickers. In September he was rewarded with All-Australian selection at full back.

“He deserved the opportunity,” Fantasia says. “There were questions of his size and agility but we backed him in and saw what he could do. “

Bock was so keen to get drafted he cut off his dreadlocks to show the recruiting scouts that he was serious about his football. The new look didn’t help him at the national draft but the Crows were convinced he had something to offer.

And Mattner had been slow to develop physically but showed glimpses of his tenacity at league level with Sturt.

“That is the great thing about the rookie list,” Fantasia says. “It gives you a chance to take a long look at players, to see how they are going to develop and to see if they are going to fit into an AFL program.”

The elder statesman among the rookie boys is Doughty, who first won promotion from the rookie list in 2000 and now holds the record for the most games of any of the club’s promoted rookies, late last season passing ruckman Ben Marsh’s tally of 48 games.

“Michael was another one we had monitored closely at SANFL level and unquestionably he had something,” Fantasia says. “But again it was a case of seeing how he would handle the system”

While Rutten, Bock, Doughty and Mattner were offered a stepping stone to the AFL by the rookie list, Skipworth’s spell as a rookie helped rescue his career after a dream start.

An All-Australian under-18 player, Skipworth was drafted by his favourite AFL club at the end of 2000 and made his AFL debut in the opening round of 2001, aged just 18. But after playing just five games in two years he was delisted. Added to the rookie list for the 2003 season, Skipworth earned another chance back on the main list late that season after starring for SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens.

“Being dropped to the rookie list was a fair wake-up call for him,” Fantasia says. “He had to show us he wanted to play AFL. To his credit he had a terrific year (with SANFL club Woodville-West Torrens) and was upgraded.”

Fantasia says the rookie list will continue to unearth AFL players: “The system has been proven to work for both the clubs and the players. We have always been of the belief that with the standard of local footballing talent the rookie draft will always give our club a good supply of potential AFL talent.”

thanks mate - that makes sense otherwise clubs would hang off until after the NSD so as not to limit their opportunities

Now Griffen is on the main list and we can promote another rookie in Hudson's place if need be. The difference is, Griffen AND the rookie will be on 1 year contracts.

If we did it the way you suggested, Griffen would have a 1 year contract and the draftee would have a 2 year contract that we would have to honour. Not a good idea if the guy turns out to be a dud.
