Newcombe got arms around Howe's body and brought him to ground while he was in possession of the ball

Laird just hit Cripps after he kicked the ball. If that's a tackle attempt he did a really, really bad job of it.

I suspect he wasn't going for the tackle, because he got there too late and hit Cripps after he kicked the ball, so if he tackled him properly it might have been a holding free. It looks like he was trying to apply pressure on the kick, lined him up for a bump (or "running into him" or maybe a push?), and got him high.

I agree but under the current AFL rules they've been banning players all year for high contact like this in bumps
Well, I disagree that Newcombe tackled or even attempted to. Arms did not go around the body at all, he kind of just ran into him as though he didnt see him, almost exactly the same as laird, except laird didnt hit as hard

Reckon he gave it a good go

Keane's 5th game in the coaches votes this year, generally picking up 1 or 2. The other players with 5+ games in the votes are Dawson, Thilthorpe, Rankine, Keays, Soligo, Neal-Bullen, Worrell and Laird, which I think looks quite a bit like our top 10 in the BnF, maybe with ROB or Max thrown in. Pretty good spread this year in terms of roles.
Keane has gone another level since Butts then Murray came in. Definitely more suited to not playing the #1 lockdown role as allows him more freedom to leave his opponent & take plenty of marks to repel the opposition attacks.

Chance Jones in the negatives is alarming. I was comfortable with him being sub but not anymore after that display. If we have an early injury we are screwed.

He seems to be hiding from the ball again. Let’s find another sub. Nank makes sense if we want flexibility. We all want Draper for impact but he seems to be done for the year.
Jones spent most of the game chasing his opponent. Was ineffective.

Playing anyone as sub for 5 consecutive games is poor player management imo.

Has to go back to the sanfl.

Nankervis provides us similar flexibility & deserves a go.

Interesting comment by Walker on AFC site:
One of the good things that Murray Davis has brought in is when we do our opposition analysis, we plan as if they are going to bring their best and we’ll do that this weekend,” Walker said.

One of several good things, is my guess :sneaky:.

OK, kudos to Nicks for listening and acting upon good advice, but Davis' influence on Nicks and the Crows has been Season-defining ... for the team and Nicks.
When Nicks is given Coach of the Year 2025 it'll be interesting to hear what he says.

We don't have a bulletproof profile.
We didn't stay as hot as possible.
TT was double and triple teamed.
There are lessons from every game.
We wouldn't escape against any other team.

Half the problem with Nicks in the past is he doesn't make changes. If our structure isn't holding up in a Final, which is very possible, do you suggest we just stick with it?

Try something different, you never know what gem you uncover.

We have the best defense in the league and the best intercept game. It's as bulletproof as bulletproof gets at the moment. We also escaped a bad one, and are on a 7 game winstreak, so no, we maintained that we are hot.

The only lesson in that game is you can't travel to Perth and expect the result to fall into your lap by rocking up. Well that and Rankine can spark our game in a quick burst, but we already knew the second part. The rest is just a response to the fact we didn't give a **** until 5 minutes into the third when Rankine decided to put his foot down (and note, Thilthorpe found separation once we decided to put our foot down). Once he did, we went 52-26 in scoring.

We've shown all year we do not have any mid or small forward depth so suggesting that is just ignoring the lessons already learned. We are committed to our path, structurally, because that is the only path at this point. We're all in on Thilthorpe being healthy. Remember, Murphy is next in when it comes to the forward line.

More to the point, the last 20-30 years of football has said loud and clear that you're better off doubling down on your structure if it isn't working mid-game then tinker. Because eventually their momentum will run out if you're scrapping. After all, the Blights of the world have died out as coaches.

Just noticed Ben Keays: 6K 2H 2M 3T, gotta be his worst game for a while.

I can't imagine him being complacent or not putting in. He's so intense.
Was he tagged, or heavily marked?

Nah, he was complacent. Most of us were.

Not that I can blame them, first finals series on the horizon and it's round 22 against the worst team in the league.

I've seen complacency at many levels of competitive sport but I've never understood it. I always wanted to beat an opponent, whether one-on-one or within a team, no matter who we played.
A strong opponent? Great --- to be the best you gotta beat the best.
A weak opponent? Great --- let's give them a hiding so bad no-one will want to play us.
If it was complacency based on the reasons you've mentioned it's very disappointing but I can see that resting Walker sends a message, namely:
"We're going to win this easily without Tex". There were obvious signs of mental relaxation + I think the intensity and pressure from the WCE (to their credit) surprised some of our players who were expecting a walkover.

He was heavily marked and thumped at every opportunity.
Interesting; thanks to you both for very different observations. Maybe it was a combo of both?

What I miss watching on TV is a lot of what happens off the ball.
I noticed Keays was quiet but I couldn't see why. Peatling too.
Curtin also was quiet, or well-held; not sure. Did apply 7 tackles.

Quoted you 20 times (I haven’t unless you’re counting replies in which case you’ve done the same) yet you can barely remember the interaction?
What bullshit.

You said in your last post words to the effect that you’ve taken the month to consider your opinion on him and he can **** off and now you’re saying he’s been decent the last few games.

Not sure what your deal is, but lucky not everyone acts the way you do on here from 1 simple question.
I’m out 👍🏻

A whole bunch of mental gymnastics to find the only solid gold bit of the post right at the end.
