today is one of those days where i just don’t see it getting better for ages
. “young guns” don’t look that good anymore
. coach is probably past it
. our list manager is our own worst enemy
. we have the shortest player to ever play the game running AROUND IN OUR DEFENCE(extremely slow to)
. no one wants to come play for north
. our zone defence is ****ing stupid
and last off all our attack is so ****ing boring to watch and mind you we’re paying this guy 1 million dollars a year

Personally, I can't see us playing finals before 2030. The current list has limited talent. Plenty of B & C Graders. Very few A Graders. Couple that with a coach who is lost in space and a playing group with a fair bit of mental fragility.....finals before 2030 would be paying $25. Minimum.
Even if this current list miraculously reached its full potential, a finals berth would be it's best possible achievement. Going deep in September.....forget about it. Sorry to tell ya, it ain't happening. Unfortunately.

In answer to the thread title, 2-3 years. I think we're building a good list. It just needs more time. A lot of our high-end draft picks need to get to the 80-100 game bracket.
F**K, I'll be in my 80s and limited to sh*t KAYO.

So here's a list of current players who could be part of our next finals tilt. There might be one or two not on this list who might surprise yet.

15 of the 24 players are under the age of 23.
5 of the 24 players have 80+ games of experience.
16 of the 24 players are yet to play 50 games
One thing consistent with finals teams is their ability to find diamonds in the rough with late draft picks. We have 6 players on this list (25%) that were taken after pick 50, including rookies. Not bad!
I don't think our list is as bad as some would make out. The reality is that it's still going to take time for the majority of these players to reach that 80 game mark. 2 - 3 years.
Interesting that in 2 years time, not a single player on this list will be 30 years old.
I hope this gives some perspective. I think some of us on here are getting way ahead of themselves. And don't get me wrong, I get it! We've been shit for ages! But reality is this.

Not until the club gets serious about it and conducts an independent root and branch review into it's culture and mindset. It's ludicrous that any club can earn itself high end draft picks for 6 years on end and not make any significant improvement to its ladder position, with the goal of even being a dangerous lower order team feeling as far away as it ever has. That only happens if there are deeper fundamental issues which never get properly acknowledged let alone addressed. Then after that's been done, then the improvement can START.

So my answer to the OP question is...probably not in the next decade.

excellent post and it makes the current predicament not look so bad but i would also add that when sausage doesn’t get injured every week and can play a full game he is gonna play a big part in our finals series

Heard from a good source we've been allocated a major Friday night fixture, the next millennium eve match. Club is confident we will be competing for final eight by then 😉

Yes, sausage was one of the few players I was referring to in my first sentence but at this stage there's not really much form to go by to be included in the table.

So that guy who was drafted three years ago and has spent basically that entire time on the injured list without ever making the team is proven to be so good he's going to play a big part in our finals series??

Wow. I'm so jaded I'm beginning to sound like DF.

Regardless of the number of games and draft pick of these players, of those under 25 only Sheezel and Curtis fall into none of the categories of "Average", "Promising", "Unproven" or "Injury-prone". These guys are no sure fire slam dunk to be an A-grader.

For all the early picks we've had in the last 6 years, you'd reckon the joint would be stacked with a quarter of the AFL Under 23 team.
