Analysis How the state of the game has evolved, is the increased rate of injuries a result of of the evolution

Terry Wallace talked about this on SEN last week. Due to many phases of game played in near gridlock in one half of field for up to 5 minutes with 36 players around, the amount of collisions per games or just general big bodied hits is more per game than any time before. He reckons issues of concussion are just going to get worse and worse.

This to me just seems another by-product of the root cause which is jumping to 4 interchanges which lead to coaches eventual use of it to turn into a rotation system to get freshest 18 on field at any point in time and just territory invasion for many minutes of games. Play opens up from time to time but the game in one half of field with more players in less space can only lead to more collisions. Wallace made it sound like it is as much a 6 times as many hits to body than in his time. Never thought of it like that before but stunning if it is six times as much and red alert for general injuries but worse the body jarring hits to bodies that even if not concussed, those that been concussed before it is not good for their long term health.
good post.

And due to the high pressure, high intensity training regimes more campaigners are pulling hami's and other non concussion injuries etc.

I can only relay what I heard that my ears pricked up on what Terry Wallace said in this audio. AFL should take note, closely...

Start listening from 24 minutes 44 seconds of this audio

About 6 or 7 minutes to listen to from there.

Funny that on the couch they said exactly what I said and they also mentioned it on AFL360 tonight.

There’s very evidently a case of the athleticism and physical capabilities of players in the modern case usurping the skills.

Not necessarily less skilful players but there’s definitely a lot more capability of players to exert physical pressure for longer and create situations which don’t allow for perfect execution.

It’s not that teams have gotten worse, it’s just the way the games being played there’s a much bigger focus on cohesive team play, solid structures, energy and trust between players. That’s the only way you can get ahead of the pack because the quality of players has evened out tremendously.

You have to remember kids coming into the system have now generally been training and competing at much more professional and intense levels since a very young age. It’s much harder for a absolute stand out player to be head and shoulders above the rest consistently because the base of all players is much higher.

I think it starting to be a common thought that that the game has turned into this mess.... I don’t think it’s negative that we come here because we love the game we just want the product to be better then the crap it has served us up for the last 10 years

I think you have rose tinted glasses regarding the quality of football in the 90s.
Much bigger mess than today's game.

No it should decentralize and make teams travel an equal amount, imagine the outcry if West Coast got 17 home games in one season eh ?
Imagine if Richmond had a genuine home advantage in 10 games

simple. Take out both wings and limit the interchange to 2 players. This'll reduce congestion and reduce the overall AFL lists by 72 players

I think you’re right

Too many players on the park and the reduced bench would be back to the future.

It's funny how you were losing your mind ranting on about conspiracy theories about how soccer is being persecuted the other day and now youre back on your one man mission to convince everyone that football is a terrible game nowadays

The biggest issue after the travel inequity is the fact most of the players leaving Gold Coast and The Giants seem to be going back to Victorian teams. I have no doubt that Jaeger Omeara ( a WA Boy ) thought that if he come back to WA he would be lucky to make 100 games with all he flights, I know that Patrick Cripps has no intention of coming back to a WA team because of this very reason which if the situation was reversed I'm sure there would be a Victorian Outcry. How long before its addressed that the last dozen Premierships are from Victoria ? and the last 2 pinched by teams not in the 8 the year before ? this speaks volumes for the advantages of being based out of Victoria.

O'meara i understand, he's half shot already. But Cripps is treading water if he doesn't change club.

Even Jonathon Brown made a comment about it today during the Freo-WCE game. Granted the Western Derby was fantastic and the way it should be played. Browny said that it restored his faith in AFL football which he was starting to lose, especially after yesterdays shit spectacle at Spotless.

If past champions are saying it, that speaks for itself. Lyon, Roos, Dunstall and others have all made comments in the last week alone about the state it is in.

That being said, I enjoyed todays games. Or at least the last two. The Pies have impressed me the last 5 weeks with their ball movement, speed and hunger. They just got outclassed today by the best team in the comp who go up several gears when need be.

The Western Derby was like a final. Well played by both clubs. Loved Freo's footy too in season 2018. Exciting watch.

:rolleyes:Cos no commentaries ever bag us for the cheap populism.

I used to go to one or two other matches that didn't involve my club most weeks back in the 90's. Now I struggle to watch many of the games on television. It's all mostly over regulated formulaic rubbish.

I feel sorry for anyone 30 and under that have never and probably will never see the game when it is great.

This is so true. I was actually going to goto another game this weekend after Friday night but then dawned on me I was likely to see two different teams but similar style of football and I felt it would be a waste of my time so did not go. I am an AFL member so can goto other games but unlike 90's when first had the membership the value is just not there at moment until spectacle of game is fixed. I believe it will take another season for AFL to fully wake up and change the interchange system back to fix this mess. I went to the North v Essendon game in late 90's I believe when Carey kicked 10 and Lloyd 8. I used to love seeing other games but right now I know 90% of games are going to be crap spectacle. The rotation system has ****ed things bad. Be lucky to find 2 or 3 quarters of attractive football over full 9 games in round at moment. That is sad state of affairs.

The team currently on top of the ladder at the moment are effectively "rugby lite", and the game is at such a low ebb that some other clubs are actually trying to copy that!

The modern game is built upon negation.

The coaching tactics and officiating have effectively created this.

They earn between $80k and $200k per year.

How much should they earn before we expect them to be consistent?

They are appalling and they are affecting results.

Too many people get sucked in by late blowouts that wallpaper over the effect that poor umpiring has over setting up results.

Its rare that umpires influence a result, but they certainly influence the score.

But mostly they just make the game look bad with their inconsistency. And Clarko was right. Sometimes you should reward the tackler, rather than let the guy with the ball get away with dropping the ball or throwing the ball, or a teammate taking the ball off him. Poor skills shouldnt be rewarded.

I don't buy that mate. Holding 4-5 goal leads is not difficult in modern negation football. Many times appalling umpiring sets up leads that sees a side further capitalise with a late influx of goals as opposing teams are forced to take risks in order to compensate. This then serves to mathematically wallpaper over the earlier poor officiating. I have seen it too many times.

I hope this isnt just about Port on the weekend.

They were the better team.

And Brown has more goals from free kicks than any other Forward except Menzel.
