Analysis How the state of the game has evolved, is the increased rate of injuries a result of of the evolution

I'm not necessarily opposed and it would open the game up. My concern is it might further advantage athletes over footballers.

Can we really say we have the greatest game in the world if any old athlete can be basically as good as/impact the game as much as our most skilled players?

I think awarding the tackler will result in really ugly football.... for a while. It will encourage ghosting.... where players lay off their opponent waiting for them to get possession so they can tackle.

But in time, those ball winning players will learn how to clear the ball quickly, requiring players up the field ready to receive the ball out of congestion.

And only the very best players will be able to take their time. That is how it used to be. The average players would slam it on the boot. The best players could find time. Now all are given the chance.

Get rid of prior opportunity for players receiving handballs

If a player has the opportunity to kick the ball but elects to handball, and the receiver gets tackled stait away that player is gone.

Forces more kicks, teams will need players in marking positions up forward creating less congestion.

Whatever they do they need to trial it properly. They can't just rush it in to the rule book next season because the AFL would never admit it got it wrong and then we'd be stuck with more rule changes that were not needed.

Prior opportunity is still a thing.

I guarantee any team wanting to be 2nd to the ball will lose. Every. Time.

Football is ugly because the AFL has allowed poor skills to be introduced. They can just as easily get rid of them by enforcing rules already in the game.

The constant need to fiddle is exactly why we are here.

The dropping TV ratings show its more than a media beat up

The media shouldnt have demanded more NSW and QLD teams for more games to show on telly.

That is why the quality is down. We dont have enough elite footballers to fill 18 teams.

And we dont have enough elite umpires to umpire 9 games.

So they are bitching about a product of their own creation.

Yep it's all the expansion clubs fault. By growing the TV audience we've somehow managed to shrink it.

We've distributed players from our expanded list all over the competition. Our academy, just the Giants not all 4 northern clubs, has helped develop 16 players to an AFL debut, 5 for other clubs.

But it's all our fault. Just not sure how we're responsible for climate change, but I'm sure you'll have a reason for that as well.

Not fair to quote half the post

I agree the talent pool is too thin for the number of listed players.

If we are going to keep the same number of clubs the teams should be reduced to 16 players on the field and only 2 on the bench. Rotations should be limited to a few per quarter at most. This will stop coaches using their entire team like midfielders, running the full length of the ground relentlessly. Less flooding and zoning will result in more one-on-one contests, rather than watching key forwards against 4 defenders.

What ever we do it has to start now. The game is becoming very hard to watch except for the top few teams

i would fix it by making all the older people who remember the 'good old days' of football so fondly to re-watch entire ancient seasons in full, shot with todays equipment and technology, including every rubbish game between bottom sides in squalor with part time footballers/full time carpenters.

then id make them travel forward in time and watch all the people of my generation, now the 'oldies', complaining about how 'footy isnt what it used to be when i was young' and complaining about the skills which have apparently never been lower, but in actual fact are far higher...

Geez people getting sucked into this media beat up.

Yes & no. Plenty have been dissatisfied for a lot longer. Love my footy & watch plenty of it but hate much of what I've seen since mid 2000's. This is just another cycle of putridness the game seems to have to go thru now & then but that doesn't mean fans don't have the right to have a good whinge about it.

those who actually watch full matches from 30,40, 50 years ago and not just highlight reels will know that the skills and pace have improved across the board

Of coarse they have better skills now, however they have no space to execute them so it actually looks worse. We just need to find a way of spreading the players out and letting them play with flair again because watching Scott Selwood get 15 tackles a game is f***** boring. Why are all the greatest ever players key forwards???? It’s because we love seeing key forwards dominating the game ( I know Mathews is a midfielder however he played a lot as forward). It’s sad that today’s youth don’t know how a key forwards can change your clubs fortunes and what high marking is.

Won't happen as soon as we hope. I reckon 2020 is when the bench rotations will finally be removed. They will review it in off season but act the following year.

I think the "oldies" have no argument re skills, bravery, etc

But new coaching tactics...
Add to that, the athleticism of players... the height of the players.... 185cm used to be CHF.

Crowding around stoppages is undeniable. And isn't what the game is supposed to be about.

Do nothing and see where we are in 5 years without changing or tweaking rules and regulations. So many changes are made in a reactionary fashion with unseen or unintended results.

Just let it settle for a bit.

I think that's what we've been doing over the last decade or so. 2000 was the first time I remember heavy flooding being introduced came into the comp. The Hawks took it further to the zone, then it's progressed to mauls and congestion since then. I cant think of many rule changes introduced to address this initial move away from the positional game the sport has always been. We've allowed the game style to change on it's own, but unfortunately it has got progressively more defensive to the point it's almost unrecognisable and boring
