Does anyone expect us to trade a player to get ourselves a 1st round draft pick or use to on-forward for another trade?

I don't know why but I half expect Gunston to be part of some deal.. There was something 'Buddyesque' circa 2013 about Gunston this year where he was played out of the forward line - perhaps Clarko getting ready for life after Gunston.. (as he did with Buddy in 2013).

Yes Gunston performed really well in his defensive role, but don't forget we'll have Stratton & Birchall back there in 2018...

Rival clubs circling out-of-contract Bomber

Callum Twomey August 30, 2017 7:17 PM

ESSENDON speedster Conor McKenna is weighing up his future as he remains out of contract despite a breakout season for the club.

McKenna has enjoyed a career-best year for the Bombers across half-back, and has become a key member of their defence with his brilliant foot skills and pace.

AFL.com.au understands the Irishman has been in discussions with the Bombers over a new deal, but is considering his options as a number of other clubs circle with strong interest.

The Bombers won the fight for McKenna and signed him as an international rookie at the end of 2014, having been the first club to approach him in Ireland.

I rate this kid highly. Awesome user of the ball. Plus we have Glass on the list to help translate :)

The following video shows Conor McKenna has a good footy brain (Watch no 45):

It seems to me Conor's first instinct when he gets the ball is to accelerate. He then either gets caught or the game opens up. At 21yrs old his game sense will only get better.
I'd love him at the Hawks

Conor is out of contract.

Buddy wasn't covering for injury in 2013 when we put him on a flank. We'll trade some of our established players, but I can't see it being Gunners.

Apart from Gunners, who do you think is '1st round' worthy?
This year hasn't got a depth of talent, so whether we trade for picks or trade for players I'm not sure - but players with 1st round potential might be Isaac Smith, or Luke Breust. Shame we can't get good currency for our non-best 22 players now we aren't the reigning premiers.

Start with what other clubs need, I s'pose. Also gotta factor in the trading of future picks & what we want. Given that 2018 is supposedly the best draft since XYZ, it's possible we'll want trades etc. this year & picks next year.

If Brissie lose Rocky as a FA, they then start Trade Period with Picks 1, 2, 15 & 19 or something crazy. Instead of chasing a 1st Rounder in this period (2017), we may well throw them our 2018 1st + Players for their 2018 1st; or, a player in 2017 for their 2018 2nd etc. That is if they're chasing some wisdom to help manage their youth & talent. They have good KPD but they're very young; Birch would be a good mentor & Stratton would probably offer them 4yrs of solidity to build around.

Whitecross would offer cheap & immediate professionalism & show what a clubman should be. As would Schoey.

None of the above would net 1sts, but coupling picks & players could get us multiple 2nds in 2018.

Bushrangers, Kings,
I can't see us don't be anything of note this year to be honest.

We are not in the position... looking at our list who might other clubs desire and what would they part with?

Does a Luke Beverage who knows our players well come at us with a Stringer for Frawley or Gunston type deal if he thinks they are right in the window now to win it again?

Gunston pick 10-15
Breust 15-20
Birchall 15-20
Smith 15-20
Frawley 15-20 (maybe).
Stratton 20-25

Can't see us doing anything this year to be honest.

If we want Whitfield (I think he is overrated at this stage) we need to find a player who is worth a top 10 pick to trade.

Surely we wouldn't trade 2018 first round for him???

Bushrangers, Kings,
Trading these 2 makes more sense to me than trading Gunston or Breust
Although, I hate trading anyone who commits to Hawthorn

Steven don't forget the said player has to agree to be traded.

We don't know if some of contracted players are considering a change of scenery as well.

I noted Clarkos comments recently when he spoke about players early in the season lacking hunger and the club decided to lay off and send these guys away to perhaps see who comes back and really wants back in to try and climb the mountain again....(Birchall Rioli Frawley Stratton) are 4 that come to mind that no doubt at times this year we could of pushed harder to get them back playing .

No doubt some of these players that have multiple flags may be thinking it's time for a new coach and system to freshen them up.

Frankly, if we don't trade I'd be happy. If we don't get into the 1st round of the draft pick... I don't care. I say, Never throw away a proven talent and a Hawthorn man for a high pick. Phark that.

I'd love M Kennedy, Lever, Hopper or McKenna at our club but would not want us to over-pay.
McKenna is an easy call at 3yrs for 350k.

People talk about Clarkson and GW being ruthless. All I have seen over the years is loyalty and assistance.
Sammy now has a last finals campaign and then a certain coaching career. Jordan has 2 more years and a possible chance at a 5th premiership.
Hale and Geuy have coaching jobs, Hodgey and Gibson have media jobs in front of them. Most Hawthorn players, not at Hawthorn, continued their careers at other clubs.
Looking back, just a tiny few Hawthorn players did not get more out of footy after they left Hawthorn.

Clarkson is not only the best technical coach in the comp, he has also shown that he is the most emotionally intelligent.

I'll enjoy whatever may come.

I think missing finals, plus 2 new assistant coaches, will be all the freshening up they need
Guys like Cyril, Breust, Smith, Gunston have only missed finals 1 or 2 times in their careers!

I think I have settled in my preference for player inns for the Hawks.... just to share.

Yes..... Hopper. Bull mid & attainable. Surprise surprise.

Balic... cheep as chips deal & midfield depth. I think he is another gem that is yet to be polished.

Matthew Hammelmann... KPF on the rise. Cheep get & structure relevant if Ty doesn't come good

FA target...... Motlop.
BOOOO!!! HISSSS!!! I hear.

This just makes sense to me..

Outside speed
X factor
Midfield capable
Goal kicker
Versatile

A lot of iffs to come...

Partnered with Rioli would be freaking amazing! Bums on seats stuff!! $$$

Opens the door to get into the draft with him coming in.

Opens the door for trading.

Keeps guys like Langers & Doc out of the fwd line.

Brings Premiership experience - IS a big game player! (no need to elaborate if you pick up what I'm putting down).

Should be affordable & an easy fit into the salary cap.

All with a pinch of salt but I feel that it would get is straight back to top 4 without blowing the budget, selling the farm at the draft or at the trade table.

There is heaps of handbager hate & Motlop piss taking as expected on the Hawks board but Motlop's best is far to good to pass up if he is available.

Brisbane must be praying that Rocky walks, no way you'd get a top 10 pick for him on the open market.
