I miss the triangular series

As I understood it at the time, CA wanted to keep the old tri-series going but the other countries didn't want to, they wanted short series of 3 or 5 games and back home, they didn't want to spend a month on tour for a meaningless tournament. So CA were forced to switch to the current format.

7 ODIs is a bit too much for one series, but most summers we have the Chappell-Hadlee series against NZ too. For some reason we aren't doing it this year and they are making up the numbers with 7 matches against England instead. I'd prefer say 5 against England and 3 against NZ - not sure why the NZ series was canned.

I think we should go back to the tri series but only with the top tier teams like India, SA, England and Sri Lanka. NZ if they're lucky. But have two matches against each opponent, maybe three and then a three match final series between the top two qualifiers.

Maybe we could organise something with New Zealand? Sort of like the Three Nations rugby except with a rotating third team?
Aust, NZ and South Africa...those were always the best series, especially in the days of Gilly, McGrath, Fleming, Cairns, Klusener and Pollock.

I think because we just had a Chappell-Hadlee series over there in March last year. They're coming here for the 2011-12 summer though.

They will never have Australia vs Australia A again. Apparently it was a bad look having more people support Australia A instead of the national team.

Interesting story in the papers today about the ratings of the first couple of ODIs. Outrated the T20s, the tennis, even Oprah!

I must admit I supported Australia A. I think Aussies love to support the underdog!. It gave all those borderline players who couldnt get a spot in the national side a real crack. I remember Lehmann smashing Warne into the stands on one occasion and saying to myself "thats why he should be playing for Australia"! Im sure Stuart Law was also one of my favourites. Format could work for Christian, Ferguson, Hopes, Bailey, Hodge and Co if they brought it back but i doubt it would happen thanks to CA.

I actually remember Tubby Taylor cracking the shits about it at the time saying something like the public should always support the proper team first.. I sort of preferred the 'A' team as it had a couple of my favourite WA players in it. Was an interesting series and seeing Hayden and McGrath having a few words out there in the middle was pretty funny.

Would be good to see some highlights of Aust v Aust A. I searched you tube/rest of net without luck. CA must have found and deleted them all.

the whole Australia 'A' thing was a bit surreal, and realistically would have done more damage than good if it had continued. Tubby did have a point after all. Of course people are booing Australia again now, but for different reasons ...

I think this is what the problem is with one day cricket. You play a series of games against a team that at the end of the day are nothing more than friendlies.

The test playing nations would be better off Playing 3 one dayers against each other every year with the top 2 teams playing off in a best of 3 final. 5 teams at home and 4 away one year then reverse it the next.

Would actually ad meaning to one day games and get people interested in matches not involving your own country happening overseas.

Australia A playing in the series was only that year that Zimbabwe toured, wasn't it? CA were concerned that they might not be up to the required standard and were concerned that crowds and interest (and therefore revenue) might suffer. Australia A was just a gimmick to get the crowd into it.

i think you'll find we are obligated to hosting 10 odi's a summer with the ICC capping the 20/20's at 3 per summer (well at least until the next itenary).

we hosted sth africa/nz in 07/08 for 5 each
we hosted wi/pak in 08/09 for 5 each
the cricket board saw fit to host sri lanka for 3 and england for 7 this summer (possibly as a warm up for the world cup) - either that or just cashing in on england or showing a lack of respect to the other test nations - AGAIN!

I was living in Adelaide at the time of the B-team experiment and felt insulted when the ACB refused to give Adelaide a single ODI involving the national team.

Adelaide were unfortunate enough to have the glorified ODD (Australia vs B-Team), with the 2nd match being contested by the two visiting teams (Eng vs Zim). It was the first time in years that I didn't bother going to see the game.

I too miss the tri-series, but on top of that I miss having games played inbetween tests as well. It mixed up the season, and kept things interested tv-wise as well, seeing different players and different styles of play to break things up. Not to mention actually getting to see different teams play. IIRC they would play half the tests (or a series, if 3-tests), play some 1-day games, finish the tests, then finish the 1-day series.

This way, if you got tired of a certain form of cricket after a while, you'd have something different to keep you interested.

As for Aus A, more than ever it's clear it won't happen again. With all the shit CA is (rightfully) copping for their decisions, if the 2nd-tier team came out and outdid the mob they told us was the best, it would be the ultimate humiliation.

It would be great fun to watch though especially as most of Australia cant understand the selectors current decisions!

Playing the ODIs after the Ashes is a killer. It's like having the NAB Cup in October. Whoever won the Ashes could lose this series 7-0 and it's hard to believe they would give a shit. Start the T20s and ODIs in late November to early December. First Test in Brisbane, then second on Boxing Day, Sydney over New Years, then Perth, culminate with Adelaide over Australia Day.

It would also ensure that the big Sydney and Melbourne tests are 'live'

Agreed and agreed :thumbsu:

I remember in 2005 in England they had the ODIs before the Ashes. I thought it was a nice arrangement and helped create hype (in my head anyway) for the later.

Definitely. It also gets both sides accustomed to the conditions, so neither team is "going in cold". Start with a "bang" with a couple of T20s, follow it up with a 5 match ODI series, take a week or two off for the touring side to play some tour matches and the home players to play some state cricket, build up some anticipation, and then finally head into the Test series. Definitely the way to go.
