What's your ideal starting lineup for 2002?

I thought about it and came up with the following lineup, ignoring any injuries or any lack of form which might occur between now and then.

Back: Mathews Dunkley Seymour
Halfback: Nicks Schuable Saddington
Centre: Williams Kelly Maxfield
Half-Forward: Bolton Goodes O'Loughlin
Forward: Lockett Hall Daffy
Followers: Ball Cresswell Schwass

Interchange: Warfe McPherson Crouch Barry

Emergencies: Kennelly Doyle Kirk

The lineup is probably a bit conservative, going for the older, tried and true players rather than sticking in some of the younger guns (Crouch, Kennelly, Doyle, O'Keefe, Fixter, etc.) in the starting lineup. I've put Jason Ball in ruck where he shined last year, put Goodes in at Centre Half Forward in the middle of a potentially all-conquering Half Forward line, Goodesy could alternate with Ball in the ruck, you could also experiment with Hall and Schuable in the ruck at stages.

Barry Hall goes to Full Forward with Plugger hopefully dragging a couple of defenders to assist Barry and scoring a few goals himself at Right Forward Pocket. I'd put Daffy at Left Forward Pocket and see how he fares from there. Tried and True Dunks would remain at Full Back with Schuable at Centre Half Back. Anyone from Cresswell, Williams, Bolton, O'Loughlin, Maxfield, Schwatta, Kelly and Crouch could play in an alternating follower/centre positions

Here's my team:

Backs: Seymour Dunkley Crouch
Halfbacks: Barry Saddington Schauble
Centre: Maxfield Mathews Nicks
Halfforwards: O'Loughlin Goodes Williams
Forwards: Kelly Hall Bolton
Followers: Ball Cresswell Schwass

Interchange: Warfe Lockett Doyle McPherson
Emergencies: Kirk Kennelly Daffy

I'd love to find a place for Kirk and Kennelly. Lockett to come off the bench in spurts and cause the defence havoc. Kelly will play a lot up forward. I'm not sure what Daffy can offer the team though.

Hmm .. Very interesting indeed.

I think that we have to mix the youth up. The older players are going and we need to prepare for the coming years, otherwise we will fall down the ladder.
It is possible to have a youthful team and be a success (1996?)

Here's my lineup.

Back: Warfe Dunkley Seymour
Halfback: Nicks Schuable Saddington
Centre: Williams Matthews Maxfield
Half-Forward: Goodes Ball O'Loughlin
Forward: Lockett Hall Kelly
Followers: Doyle Cresswell Schwass

Interchange: Barry McPherson Kennelly Bolton

Emergencies: Fixter O'Keefe Kirk

You may find some of my choices, interesting, to say the least.
I think we need to put Doyle in the ruck, because he has to develop properly. And I dont think he will do that properly in the VFL. We have to take that risk. Even if it means him playing off the bench with Ball (going into the ruck).

I have gone with Kennelly starting on the bench, because I think he is going to be a big part of the Swans future, and I think he will have a big year (rising star :D).

I have changed Matthews into the centre, different from the other lineups that have been mentioned here. He does play quite a lot of footy there now, and I think he players extremely well there.

I have not put Goodes at CHF because I dont really like him there. Too much pressure on him I would imagine, plus he would attract a better defender. He played a lot there last year, and dropped far too many marks, and made too many mistakes. I think the move out there will release the pressure more.

Thats my basic idea anyway. :)

The roar from the crowd when he comes on, especially in the first game, would have to give the Swans a lift.
I've got a reserved seat in the O'Reilly Concourse, and to hear that "there's only one Tony Lockett" song again would have to be great for the team.

Round 8 the Bulldogs have a home game against you guys at the SCG. I have done my Bulldogs side, and I will compare the side to Sydney Fans side.

My Bulldogs side

B : S.Kretiuk - M.Croft - D.Bandy
HB : B:Harrison - A.James - S.Power
C : B.Johnson - S.West - J.McMahon
HF : N.Brown - C.Grant - R.Smith
F : S.Garlic - K.Hunter - D.Giansiracusa
Foll : L.Darcy, M.Robbins, R.Murphey
Int : M.Alvey, D.Gilbee, T.Liberatore, L.Penny

Emergency : Hahn, Eagleton, Barlett

Sydney Fans Swans V Xies Bulldogs

Sydney backs : Mathews ------ Dunkley ------ Seymour
Dogs forward : Giansiracusa -- Hunter ------- Garlic

Sydneys HB : Nicks ------ Schubale ------ Saddington
Dogs Ha/Fd : Smith ------ Grant ---------- Brown

Sydneys C : Williams ------ Kelly ------ Maxfield
Dogs Cent : Mcmahon ----- West ----- Johnson

Sydneys HF : Bolton ------ Goodes ------ O'Loughin
Dogs Ha/Ba : Power ------ James ------ Harrison

Sydneys F : Lockett ------ Hall ------ Daffy
Dogs Back : Bandy ------ Croft ------ Kretiuk

Sydneys Foll : Ball ------ Cresswell ------ Schwass
Dogs Follow : Darcy ---- Robbins ------ Murphey

Swans Int : Warfe ------ Mcpherson ------ Crough ------ Barry
Dogs Inter : Alvey ------ Gilbee ------ Liberatore ------ Penny

Looking at both those sides I will do my conclusion :

Midfield - Darcy, Cresswell, Schwass, West. I reckon from the starting 4, the sides will be locked at 2-2.

I think Sydney have a strong defence, But I reckon Giansiracusa will be too good for Matthews, whilst Hunter will lack speed against Dunkley, however body on body will beat him. And Seymour and Garlic could go either way.

I think if the Swans are going to beat the Dogs, it will be from their HF line, as it will be too strong, too skillful and too quick for the Dogs. So the Swans deffenetly have us in that department.

I also think the Bulldogs half forward line will be far too good for the swans half backs as Grant, Smith and Brown are all skilful, quick and smart players.

The Swans also have an excellent Forward line with Daffy, Lockett and Hall, and will easily beat the Bulldogs in that department.

I also think the Swans have a better interchange than the Dogs. So going by that, I reckont he Swans are a 3 goal better side than the Dogs. :(

Hope you don't mind sticking my nose in here, but.....

(assuming all fit and healthy)

B: Crouch Schauble Seymour
HB: Saddington Goodes Warfe
C: McPherson Mathews Maxfield
HF: O'Loughlin Ball Nicks
F: Kelly Hall Lockett
R: Doyle Williams Schwass
IC: Barry Bolton Cresswell Kirk
EM: Kennelly Daffy Dunkley

With tall forward line, and Doyle struggling in the ruck, throw Ball (or Goodes) into the ruck, Saddington goes to a taller player in the backline, and Bolton or Barry pick up the other defensive role.
Will rotate older midfielders - Scwass, cresswell, Williams with Bolton, Kelly, Kirk, Crouch.

Youngsters - Ablett. O'Keefe, Fixter will get a chance when injuries appear.

Just my thoughts

Although this will almost certainly be his last game, expect Dunkley to be in the team more often than not (except when injured or - aagh -suspended). Also, Fosdike will probably start the season as a top 22 player. He's one that the club has a lot of faith in and although last season he was hampered by injury and didn't have a great year, he's a pretty useful player. He's also one that Eade has named as having trained well over the summer.

Allowing for Fosdike, and with the club wanting to give Kennelly and Ablett opportunities, its certainly hard to see where Daffy will fit into the team unless there are a lot of injuries.
