Analysis If we were so desperate for an inside mid?

Not the way I remember. The knock was that he was a HBF and not a mid who could win the ball, he only played as a mid in the TAC cup finals(very well) but was a defender for the majority of the regular season. That and the "injury" rumours. Using the ball well has always been a strength of his.
I recall some posters saying Heppell could play in midfield pre-draft and he did train with us so I hardly think playing largely in defense would have been a knock from guys in the know more than us.

Lol spot on , so funny that I lol'd

Your missing the height factor. We still need tall ruck rover types. Matt Crouch is not one, Heppel is kinda one and a left footer but they don't grow on trees and we just have to wait for new opportunities without over reaching for ones that arise.

They will come, we just need patience. I was looking at Acres last year but gotta say he looks like a poor man's Farren Ray. He might be AFL level but I would be surprised if he becomes a star. I am happy we got Lennon for our pick honestly.
Cripps?

I was only pointing out that the Heppell comparison to Crouch was wrong in my view. Heppell has never been accused of having poor disposal efficiency.

Patrick Cripps , taken the pick after Lennon 190cm 88kilo contested ball beast that is coming along nicely at Carlton.

Didn't know much about him.

Had a look at him in games for Carlton. Doesn't excite me in his movement. Happy again we selected Lennon.

Not sure this Cripps may make it let alone be a star. For me didn't look a likely type but too early for me to judge or get categorical about anything in my view on him.

I would never compare Heppell to Crouch. I would not even compare Ellis to Heppell even though both are left footers and some say Ellis does things like Heppell. The main difference between Heppell and the other two is his height and how he uses it with his size. can't compare either player to Heppell IMO.

Like trying to compare Ablett JNR with Pendlebury, there is no comparison in my book.

I understand Toad . I also remember the points you raised plus remember he knocks on his kicking .

Malthouse kept him in the VFL for most of the year , think he only played 2 or 3 games but should be primmed for this year

He only managed 3 games for 27 touches (total) in a crap team.

Yeah, must be a superstar.

Agree with you toad. Heppell kicking was always considered a assert. he was supposed to have a major issue with his hamstrings/groin which was IMO spread BT the Bombers

Not saying he's a superstar , just wondering why we didn't have a inside mid as our priority 14 months ago. If you want to compare apples with apples we'd be discussing Dunstan.

Do you know why we didn't have an inside mid as a priority 14 months ago ?

The demand for tall midfielders is making the game like basketball. The majority of up and coming mids will struggle to get drafted due to the modern game calling for height all over the ground. Basically any player under 187cm will be regarded as too short and will struggle for an opportunity in the not to distant future. I really hope that is doesn't end up like this. Surely there is a place for the shorter blokes like myself. We may get out marked or pushed out of the way a bit easier but we are quicker and more agile at ground level. The ladies love the shorter blokes though. Don't they? surely they must we're more agile.

Simple, because 14 months ago it was a lower priority.

Priorities change. Next year we might really want a ruckman, are you going to ask then why we didn't get one this year? Perhaps we didn't rate the inside mids that were available very highly last year.

2014 was ruined by injuries and form but we found Miles, and found our biggest weakness (not that it wasn't obvious we were slow).

2015 is a huge year for a number of players and the clubs success going forward. If we can have 30 players putting their hand up for selection each week it will bring the best out of players and filter out the pea hearts. I think two crucial players to our midfield success, especially inside, will be Conca and Vlastuin. Both had down years in 2014 but both have the potential to greatly improve our team and take pressure off Deledio, Cotchin and Martin. If we had 3-4 players playing at the level Miles did our midfield will go to another level and we'll get to see the best of Cotchin, Martin and Deledio. Gee the potential in 2015 is exciting I just hope we do something special, its time!
Good write up. I would add that we found a FB in Astbury if he can stay on the park. This another find of 2014.

How could it be when we're seemingly two inside mids down without discovering Miles yet?

I was all for another ruckman this year . If Maric goes down we could be royally screwed again. Most likely will be so yes.

I think we also need to remember that you can name inside mids that went after our pick, but we didn't rate them 'at' our pick. The recruiters may have thought for example that Dunstan was reaching at pick 12 or whatever Lennon went at.

Also shorter guys have a larger penis then tall blokes. Want proof, just talk to Nahas :p

We might have if we were after an inside mid like this year tells us we should of been.

Perhaps they thought that others on the list would develop into that (Arnott?), or that by getting more outside finishers they could move some others into a more inside role (Dusty?).

There are a great many options, and it's very easy to second guess them after the event.

If you want ready made Maric cover who is better than Hampson, you'd need to trade one in, needing both a good pick and plenty of $$$ (after all, the genuinely good options wont be thrilled to be second fiddle for 3-4 years). I'd suggest we have bigger concerns.

If you want a new kid, we got one.
