Clearly height is relative to the average of the era.

the discussion is about 2023, thus the ability to play in today's game is a consideration

obviously talented players could be used in another role but you'd have to consider speed and other attributes

Yep. Still managed to come back and play in many finals, and win a best and fairest, in 1999.

Look at Josh Bruce, this year. He struggled to keep up to the frenetic pace, of AFL footy.

The fact that Richo came back and kicked 91 goals, barely a year after doing his knee at the SCG (when the fence was super close), then had no real dramas.....is unbelievable.

The assumption would be you are drafting an 18 year old 185cm Gary Ablett Snr.

I 100% agree with you here height and size matter. I’m only picking GAS cause we need a Riewoldt replacement to play a CHF role. 185cm is really short for a full forward.

If I’m picking a FF it’s Buddy then daylight. Buddy is great in any era you put him in because of the athlete that he is. Not sure you’d get great output from Lockett & Dunstal in todays game as they just sat in the goal square all day.

The difference is that you're drafting Lockett as an 18 year old... with modern day training and nutrition, he's going to be better than he was. And he's infinitely a better kick than Franklin. I would take Lockett over him in a heartbeat.

Well then it becomes speculation. You need to be supremely fit and mobile these days. Lockett may well could’ve adapted but my money is still in Buddy being athletically superior. Lockett wasn’t exactly a trim, light on his feet bloke.

Dunstall, Ablett Snr, Carey or Lockett. Midfielders are everywhere, good genuine forwards are not.

Starting the clock again on Selwood would be nice. Or GAJ. Buddy or Nick Riewoldt. Jonathon Brown. There’s too many to choose from. Cox, Ottens or Sandilands, can always use a truly dominant ruck.
