Movie IMDB Top 250

Is this system flawed is my question.

Yes, there are of course a plethora of deserving movies in there, though it really does lack movies based on comedies.

It seems as if they aren't really given a fair go. My though would be to have them in a separate Top whatever to find out which comedies are rated most highly.

Thoughts anyone?

Shawshank. Good movie. The best?

My fav movie Ronin doesnt even appear to be in the top 250! Maybe the reviewers dont like action, suspense, drama, love, romance, courage, double and triple crossing, car chases wrapped around a sight seeing tour of France?

Its a great movie, is it my no1? No, but its based on mass voting.
IMDB is the best source for anything regarding films & there top250 is pretty damn accurate IMO.

It is definitely flawed. Look at Slumdog Millionaire, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1010048/, it's had a smidge under 3k votes but it's in the top 200 already.

Personally I love The Shawshank Redemption, and would have in in the top 5-10, but the list is definitely inaccurate.

The Dark Knight at 4 shows that.

The Dark Night, although a brilliant movie, is not in the top 10. That is a case of when hype combined with actually being a great movie too leads to overblown ratings.

I agree that the list is flawed but so is any list because even as the few posts so far in this thread show, it is all very subjective. There are movies in there such City of God and The Usual Suspectss that I laugh at being so high. No classics like Gone With The Wind in the top 25 seems strange or Citizen kane.

Votes for movies on that site are always going to be badly skewed. Brokeback Mountain is a film that should be one that list by popular vote. 70% of all votes for the movie are 8 or higher, but the average vote is 7.9, thanks to the 8, 000 people who gave it a 1 .

Exactly. Something has to be number 1, top 10, in the 250. Whatever it is not everyone is going to be happy.. Overall the list is pretty good IMO, haven't seen too many in there I've seen that I at least didn't think was good.

It's not flawed, 'best' is a subjective term that means something different to every voter. Alot of people think that Shawshank Redemption is the best film ever, the list reflects that. (personally I wouldn't have it in my top 50)

It's true to a lesser extent for the other films. For Brokeback Mountain it is 8.2% of the total vote. The only top 20 movies comparable to that are The Godfather (6.8%), Shichinin no samurai (6.2%), and LotR:RotK (5.6%).

Anyway, it's not that important, use it as a guide to find movies you might like, and don't take V for Vendetta > Gone with the wind as gospel .

I think there should be a one or two year delay on new movies being able to be ranked. The Dark Knight is good, but overly hyped. Still, the system works pretty well, and most movies in the top rung belong there.

Upon the release of The Dark Knight, all hell broke loose on the top 250. Within 12 hours, the movie made its way to the top of the 250 list. When Godfather fangirls took notice, they exacted their sweet revenge by rating The Dark Knight 1/10. Since then, the Godfather fanboys and extreme fans of The Dark Knight have been at war with each other. Understanding how serious the top 250 list is, fans of the Shawshank Redemption stepped in to attempt to right the situation.

The iMDB userbase generally consists of 16-year-old boys who will pick apart tiny aspects of the movie and call the rest of it complete shit, no matter how good the movie actually is. If this doesn't give you an idea of what they're like, try watching your favourite movie with your snarky, annoying friend that will interrupt every god damned second of the film to point out continuity errors. If you don't think that this is accurate, notice that the trivia, quotes, and bloopers section of any article is longer than the article itself.

Yes it's flawed, but most film lists are really. They exist to provoke discussion. You can't take them too seriously but they can't always be written off either, since you can use them to gauge yourself against the tastes of the masses.

That and teenage girls. It's always amusing to look at the ratings by demographic and see the votes these two groups give. Sometimes it can give you an even better idea of what you're in for if you wanna check out a movie before watching it!

And still at number 4 The Dark Knight, pretty surprised that hasn't slipped right back.
