But a much better approach would have been to begin at the beginning and build a club based on good structure and culture.

Doubt if anyone would disagree with you there Gav, but it wasn't an approach that was available to us - the critical, all-consuming, over-riding factor was the need for cash, and immediate on-field success was the only acceptable strategy.

he said the gap in intensity and professionalism between the 2 clubs was huge.

One was established in 1892, the other was hastily put together in mid 1994 and admitted into the competition in 1995.

You'd expect something of a gap!

Yet in 1995 we were 3-3 after 6 rounds and were hardly disgraced in the defeat to one of the oldest team in the comp (38 points).

For mine I reckon the Neesham/Daniher coaching combination was quite impressive.

You should really buy the book.

Does anyone know the order of the compensation picks other clubs used after we got players off them?

I always assumed Lloyd would have been the first player taken but that means the AFL would have deemed Ridley to be worth more than Ben Allan. (The Hawks took some no name David McEwan btw).

IIRC it was based on the previous season's ladder. The lowest placed club to lose an uncontracted player received the highest pick.

Cheers. The Hawks must have been spewing that they lost a B&F player and still got a lower pick than Essendon did for losing a complete spud.

There were a few 'deals' done by certain clubs to ensure they ended up with the best picks. Essendon released multiple players and Fremantle agreed to not take a player from a club that finished lower than them, allowing Essendon to take pick 1. West Coast did a similar thing when Port Adelaide entered by forcing Ian Downsborough out so they could take Gardiner.

The name of the player picked is shown first, the player that he was compensation for is shown last.

Essendon Comp Sel FREM Matthew J. Lloyd Todd Ridley
Geelong Comp Sel FREM Adam L. Houlihan Andrew Wills
Geelong Comp Sel FREM Steven King Stephen O'Reilly
Kangaroos Comp Sel FREM Stuart Cochrane Peter Mann
West Coast Comp Sel FREM Chad Morrison Brendan Krummel
Melbourne Comp Sel FREM David Cockatoo-Collins Jason Norrish
Hawthorn Comp Sel FREM David McEwan Ben Allan

So if we had taken no-one from Essendon then Geelong would've had first dibs and probably picked up Lloyd instead of Houlihan (you'd imagine)

If we'd taken no uncontracted players at all* then I assume that Lloyd, King et al would have been therefore available in the next draft?

*I'm not suggesting that as a realistic option, please understand that.

Correct. Don't forget that Compensation Selections were given to Essendon et al after we had taken Ridley, Wills etc., and why Clive, at pick 1, was effectively pick 8.

This is what infuriated the club hierarchy and quickly led to the "us against the world" mentality.

And no, I'm still not bitter about it
