Independent report into Hobart's proposed new stadium has found the costs of the project have been significantly underestimated

Hobart is in the southeast of the state. Wind speeds aren't all that much higher than Melbourne. Launceston is comparatively calm but gets even colder than Hobart due to being inland, like frost is common. West Coast of Tassie is a different story, rains almost every day with strong gusts in winter.
Oops, had Launceston in my head. Ignore the ‘north’ in my post but the rest is still applicable. I do think the low average temps are another reason for the roof in addition to the wind as I imagine it would at least trap some heat in as it seems to do Marvel

Don’t know why the AFL is so hung up on a fancy new roofed stadium. Expansion is about TV revenue, not revenue from bums on seats at a fancy stadium. A bit of a tart up of the existing stadiums making sure that TV camera positions and media centre are :thumbsu: would be all that’s needed.

The problem with Blundstone(assuming it got a make up to bring it up to standard) is that Bellerive is a terrible location. There is no parking and no road network to handle 20k people. Apart from the stunning views of the harbour and Mt Wellington it has nothing else going for it.

Macquarie point is a brilliant location. 10-minute walk past the waterfront to get to the bars and pubs of Salamanca and minutes from the city.

I agree that the roof shouldn't be make or break. I spend a lot of time in Hobart, and I honestly don't think the climate is much different to Melbourne in winter. An Aami Park type set up (oval of course) Should be just fine and this is better for cricket as well.

An aspect I cannot find the answer to is who is going to build the stadium. It is a small population. Are there enough construction workers?

Or are they going to relocate people from interstate or overseas?

Or is the whole thing going to take a long time because there aren'e enough skilled builders and labourers?

Who thought the AFL forcing the state to undertake by far the biggest construction project in the state's history so it can be used a handful of times a year would ever cause any issues?
But don't you realise?

It will attract concerts like um, other smaller regions like...um.

AFL has always been reluctant and not without reason. Really they should make one of the Melbourne clubs move ( Melbourne or North) or can it.

Can anyone tell me why the Devils can't just play at Bellerive & Launceston in their infancy years?

That last word is the issue.

The AFL is fine with the Devils playing at those grounds for their first few months (indeed, that's always been part of the plan/expectation), and if delays mean that turns out to be a year, they'd suck it up. But yearS, especially as the initial planning dates (before delays, etc) they wont go with.

It would be ideal, but I'm sure the fans and players would gladly put up with it if it meant watching their team play.

Turn the Saints into the devils?

They were called the 'Southern Saints' for a while after all.

and then when the project ends, most of those workers will be unemployed.

Although in typical government logic, they'll probably solve that problem by finding another big/expensive project to build....whether they need it or not! It works in Victoria after all...

The AFL didn’t force them to do anything. They wanted the side.
Tasmania bid for the team. The AFL accepted the bid.

It's insane that anyone can still pretend the AFL are the abusive ones in this relationship.
You don't get to change the bid when you win the auction.

Even if the AFL did accept a (major) change to the stadium. (and that's a sizable if).

That would put planning and design for the place back to square 1, and probably push the team back a couple of years.

The AFL was clear that they require the stadium being underway was a requirement for them to provide the license. They clearly wanted a demonstration of the commitment of the Tas government. Putting the stadium on hold for a couple of years while it's redesigned would almost certainly mean the license gets put on hold as well.

If anything, the political instability and late changes would harden the AFL's resolve on this.

I think the AFL would allow them to have a year, or year and a half somewhere else. So long as the stadium itself is being built soon enough.

If the stadium isn't ready 2028, I don't think that will kill the Devils. If there is a genuine attempt to get things done, I don't think the AFL will can the team.

The AFL have been clear that the stadium doesn't need to be finished, just underway.

But the license wont be handed over until the contracts are signed and they're ready to break ground.

A new stadium design means they wont be at that point for a few years.

It's insanity. In 20 years time, they will regret not building the stadium.

Whoever thought the afl trying to force the government to agree to a build contract at a price that is literally impossible (any decent engineer would tell you this) would cause any issues? Who would have thought the afl would want to avoid problems? Oh wait...
