If you want to have a look at a great independent site, there would be none better than thepowerfromport
It is a great site with a great concept. The person that runs it, or at least started it is Vi, not sure if she hasn't got a few to help her nowadays, and she works her butt off to keep it as good as it is. Perhaps if you ask her she could give you a few tips.

Word of warning though, do not post any anti Port stuff on the forums there, and do not mention on them that you know the big eared pest. :D

First point of call when you're after news.
It used to be in a group of independent sites where you could navigate through the various forums, and it was absolutely brilliant.
Then the company/group that they used to "join" them fell over and it stopped. Pity, as it was the best forum set up I have seen in my limited time in these sorts of things.

its not that great you should be aiming a little higher than that. Few pics wouldnt hurt. Also, the fact they had four stories all from the same matty primus source made it a little repetitive. I'm sure you can do better anyway. It is amazing that port somehow has one and we dont...

Also you may be better off if everyone chips in ten bucks or so, which aint much and you can get some professional advice.

I just stumbled across the forum and based on the amount of activity on there you can definitely do better. ;)

I might be able to help out with some free or discounted web hosting if required. I could also help out with design and PHP/MySQL if needed. PM me for info.

You got that right. I have created a number fo websites in the past (well I have been a member of the team thats created them) and let me tell you it can be a HUGE job. One I did with my cousin for a basetball club a couple of years ago took us about 6 months of hard work to get it done and in the end I probably ended up doing about a 3rd of it.

i'll assume that they aint, but if any are up and running still it would be good to see what they turned out like, if you have the links.

You are a bit hard to please. If there is an article about Port, they provide a link, no matter what paper. That may mean that there are a few different articles on the same story, but they do not pick and choose. Best way to be.

Good luck Capatalist & friends. I would offer ny support, but I'm pretty hectic with work at the moment & heading overseas for 2 months soon. Will put my hand up to help if things settle back to normality later in the year though. We badly need something as AFC site is pretty uninformative.

If needed I could contribute something from a Melbourne perspective.

Good luck, afc.com.au is so poor I can't remember ever using it.

I too have paid the odd visit there & i gotta admit they certainly done a very good job in setting up their site, maybe if you e-mail the lady in charge she might be able to offer some help.

Just don't ridicule their reg posters or their club/players & as PAF says don't mention that wondering lay-about that goes by the name of bigears. :)

perhaps Rucci may like to contribute his journalistic prowess as a lead writer - voluntarily of course - since its a good cause :D

thanks guys for all the encourage ment - the good thing is I can say that its not all me ! big thanks to SBR 04 so far and eggzoi

just a few questions guys (since you WILL be the ones visting )

what would be some thing you would like to see and the main question which I think may need to be addressed sooner rather than later

would people be willing to "make a donation" to keep it running or mind some form of advertisement - dont worry we are a long way off but i just thought i'd check !

I would be willing to make a regular donation but i'm not sure if we could rely on donations full stop, advertisement would also be acceptable as long as there not those bloody pop-up ones.

I would like to see any news what-so-ever on the Crows being it positive or negative (as long as it's fair, balanced or constructive )

Good luck to all involved in setting it up. :)

More than happy to make a donation if it means we have a decent club based web site, cause afc.com.au is crap. As for advertising think it will be a must cause i agree with the nodster won't work on a few donating only. Also agree would rather not have pop-ups.

Good luck with it, and well done to you Capitalist for your initiative :)

There were some good ideas in the other thread, which I think was linked in the above. Stuff like

- Training reports
- Regular or occasional columnists on various subjects (I think that's where I would contribute)
- Interviews - I'm sure we could arrange some with players, past and present, club officials etc
- Match reports

What noddy said.

I think we can probably gain some benefit from negotiations with the AFC and/or BigFooty. I think both sites would / should be willing to "cross-link" as it were - the AFC site could link to ours, likewise BigFooty, and we would link to BigFooty for the dicussion forum (no point in re-inventing the wheel) and it is possible that that may extend to financial support and/or sharing of hosting facilities?

I would expect that the AFC would probably want to see it up and running, and check on the standard, before they got associated with it, and that would be reasonable. I think someone should chat with Matty Robran and see how the land lies.

Further to that - I think the site and its content will need to have some editorial standards - not just to please the club, but to maintain its quality. Things like
- Serious and reasoned critique without referring to players as "duds", "hacks" and suchlike
- The same goes for certain journalists :)

Maybe that wouldn't please some of our more outspoken posters here, but I think we have to work towards something that is serious and reasoned and high quality, and is seen to be such.

I'd like to see a fans guide to Footy Park and the surrounds, including a photo spread etc. Best places to get food, guide to the bars, parking, stadium facts and trivia, atms etc

Also the 'fans guide to the grounds' could be extended to the other stadiums in the AFL, from a AFC point of view of course. I'm sure we could get a template going and get the various interstate fans to get a few words in about their local stadium(s).

I'd like to see the site become an eventual focal point for the fans point of view, and independant way of getting our point accross to TPTB, perhaps with regards to fan facilities, suggested improvements, changes the club is or are thinking of making etc.

I doubt there's a hope in hell of having the afc website to link to anything. It's Telstra owned, and Telstra operated. I doubt they'd be allowed to link to anything else.

Yeah, you're probably right. There's not a link to anything outside AFL-World now. They (the AFL/Telstra) have no idea how the internet is supposed to operate.

Still, at least it could get mentioned in the club magazine and emails to members etc. Provided the AFL doesn't notice. :p
