he is training apparently as normally as you'd hope, and his only problem is a slight stiffness in the leg after he's been running
but the player, coach and club are aiming for his training schedule to step up for a return to playing next month

Do you guys think we should use Mattner in a tagging role this weekend (similar to Mathews/Crouch) or should we let him roam free off the half back line? He was pretty awesome last week when he was let go. It would be great to see him getting some touches this weekend and not tagging for the entire game.

And that's amazing news about Malceski, not so good news about Spider...his prognosis seems to be getting worse by the week!

SIX weeks after having revolutionary knee reconstruction surgery, Sydney's Nick Malceski is running at medium pace and on target to play in round eight in a recovery that has staggered coach Paul Roos.

Nick Malceski is on target to play in round eight only 12 twelve weeks aftore his anterior cruciate ligament in February in the pre-season competition.
Malceski began running nine days ago, 4 1/2 weeks after he had a ligament of industrial-strength synthetic fibre sewn into his knee.
He has run every second day for about 20 minutes and is moving freely without a limp.
After a traditional knee-reconstruction operation with a natural graft, a player would not start running for three to four months.
Young Swans player Kristin Thornton had the conventional operation just after Malceski's surgery, and he is still in a brace.
Roos said Malceski's progress was incredible.
"It is quite staggering when you compare it to other operations," Roos said.
"The end result won't be known until he comes out and actually trains and plays, but at this stage you can clearly see why the 12 weeks (return to playing) was predicted by the doctor rather than the 12 months because he is a mile ahead of where Kristin Thornton is, or a normal knee reconstruction."
Trying to improve his luck, Malceski yesterday did stationary drills at the SCG wearing the No37 jumper belonging to Adam Goodes, who on Saturday night will play his 194th consecutive game, a streak that equals the Swans' club record.
Goodes showed his support for his team-mate by donning Malceski's No9 guernsey.
Given the radical nature of Malceski's operation, which is rare in Australia but commonly performed in Europe, Roos added a note of caution.
He said Malceski would be put through rigorous training before he was allowed to resume.
"At this stage he is on track but it is a new operation here in Australia," Roos said.
"We know if it doesn't work he will have the full (traditional) reconstruction and he will be right for next season anyway, so it is a no-lose situation for us.
"If he comes back and goes well, we've got him 14 weeks ahead of schedule. If he doesn't we will get him for round one (2009)."
It is a sensitive matter because several Australian orthopaedic surgeons have criticised the alternative surgery as risky.
Geelong club doctor Chris Bradshaw said he would be loath to have it performed on a player.
Sydney believes there is no more chance of Malceski's synthetic graft snapping than there is of a natural graft breaking.
Malceski had reconstruction surgery in 2004 on his left knee, while this time his right ligament snapped.

I guess it's hard for anyone to reliably predict when a player will be fit and even then they may not make the team or may break down in the reserves. Still a fit Spida for my money would be the biggest thing. We paid enough for the big guy and he can't have too many years left in the tank.

Would have been handy the last few weeks I reckon. He rucked against us in the semi final in '05 when King went down and held his own. Maybe we could have been using him and LRT down back and swapping as back up to Jolly rather than LRT having the second role all to himself??

NO WE CANNOT
crouch is finished, as far as i'm concerned, and mathews is close, although being on the verge of 200 games might get him into a coupla sides if other things go his way

as for spida, tonight's report says he will make his comeback in reserves NEXT week
this seems to be one of those ongoing problems, and i fear it might be a few weeks yet, and i think there's doubts over just how much he can contribute in future

currie will be a gun, as will jesse white, but i don't know if white is a genuine ruckman
more a key forward, i hope
and you're right, we might need to get another ruckman, as spida is surely in his last season, or if he has one mroe in him, he's going to struggle just as much as he seems to be this year
he was signed as much for his teaching as his playing, so hopefully he'll be able to bring on the likes of currie quicker than we'd normally expect

i still think goodes as a back-up ruckman should be considered

Agreed Deadly,but quality ruckmen are as rare as hens teeth at the moment.
A number of clubs now are playing young inexperienced ruckmen,because clubs with decent ruckmen with a few seasons under their belt are very reluctant to let them go. The ruckmans role has changed. Gone are the days
when they could just contest rucks and lumber around the field. Todays ruckman must be mobile,and be capable of kicking goals,when hes having a rest in the forward line.

He's named to play in the 2's this afternoon, so hope to see him start his season.

He is really one of the forgotten men at the minute, but the reality is he was BOG in the 2's for a hell of a lot of the games that our current 'young guns' played in last year. Hope the early injuries don't hamper him too much for this year, but I reckon it will still be many weeks before fitness and form have him knocking on the door for senior selection.

No doubt in my mind he is up to it though.

When we drafted Currie he was one of the youngest in the draft and there was a fair bit of talk that he would have gone top ten the next year if he wasn't selected in his first year. I haven't seen him play but woudl like to think he can come on sooner rather than later.

Its always a challenge getting a big guy ready, they take more time and I have to concur withTripleB, Jolly is a good ruckman but battles doing the load on his own. I was hoping once again Everett was going to assist but every week he gets further away from returning.

We will see how Currie is standing up by the end of the season development wise and if he has made great steps than we should be right otherwise we may need a guy for a few years to help jolly out for a couple of seasons while Currie continues his learning.

The things that Currie has in his favour are firstly his size. Even as still a pretty young bloke, he's got some decent bulk about him. No Andrew Erikson here.

And secondly, he doesn't seem afraid of physical contact. Again, no Andrew Erikson here.

He also looks pretty mobile - no Dean Cox but certainly no Ricky Mott either. And his skills look decent too.

He's still got some way to go yet though. While he seems to want to use his height and bulk to advantage, I watched him in one piece of play in the game against the U18 game a few weeks ago. He was one-on-one up forward against a guy shorter, smaller and younger than him. He had back position and the kick coming in should have been to his advantage as it had some good depth on it. He watched the ball all the way, held his opponent out with his hip and as the ball arrived tried to nudge the player in front with his hip. The instincts were all right, but he forgot to actually mark the ball.

I watched him do something very similar against Belconnen a fortnight ago.

The reports we have from One4 from last week's game were that he and White were outclassed last week in the ruck by the Tigers. He certainly didn't dominate in the middle the week before against Belconnen.

I am pretty confident we have a ruckman of the future and I don't think he's years away. But realistically I think it's expecting too much for him to come in this season and have any kind of impact.
