Eagles Player Ratings: Two stars were breathtaking - but a big recruit was among seven fails

1. Liam Ryan
What a player, what a talent. Gets more entertaining to watch with every game. Unsurprisingly was manned up by Brayden Maynard — and it was a classic one-on-one battle. Ryan started in stunning style, with four touches in two minutes. But it was his fourth term that stood out, kicking a crucial goal at the start of the quarter, showing off his workrate to take a few intercept marks then delivering the perfect pass to set up a Jack Darling goal. A shame we won’t get to see him play another week. Finished with 16 disposals and six score involvements. 9

2. Jake Waterman
Played across a wing but also seemed to push forward whenever Oscar Allen went into the ruck. Showed outstanding workrate all night, finishing with 11 disposals and 10 uncontested marks. 6

3. Andrew Gaff
Stood next to Josh Daicos at the first bounce. Had eight disposals in the first term but wasn’t able to drive the Eagles forward as much as he would’ve liked. As always, never stopped running all game. A fourth-quarter smother and a last-minute spoil were crucial one-percenters. Finished with a team-high 24 disposals. 7

4. Dom Sheed
Didn’t have a touch in the first term but flipped his fortunes in the second quarter with six disposals and continued to warm into the game. 5

5. Brad Sheppard
The All-Australian defender lived up to his new mantle, putting the clamps on Pies star Jordan De Goey — well for the first two and a half quarters, with De Goey snagging two crucial goals in the second half. Wasn’t as offensively damaging as usual. 5

8. Jack Redden
Great first term with seven disposals, but had very little impact on the game after that. Finished with 18 touches for the match and was the lowest-ranked player according to the AFL Player Ratings. 4

9. Nic Naitanui
If you had any doubts surrounding his All-Australian credentials, surely they were put to bed on Saturday night. In the air or on the ground, at stoppages or around the ground, the Eagles superstar produced one his finest games in one of his club’s most important matches. The fact five Eagles goals came directly from centre clearances is testament to how much influence Naitanui had on the game. Had 17 disposals, seven clearances and six score involvements. 9

11. Tim Kelly
Had Pies tagger Levi Greenwood hanging off him at stoppages — and it paid dividends for the Pies, with Kelly having just one first-quarter disposal. Was able to get himself into the game in the second term with six disposals and three inside 50s, but finished with just 12 touches for the night. This time last year he was tearing the finals series to shreds for Geelong, but it just hasn’t clicked consistently for Kelly at his new club. 4

12. Oscar Allen
Started forward, with Jack Madgen picking him up. Like most of his teammates, found some promising form after quarter-time, taking marks and kicking a crucial third-term goal before adding another major in the final term. Taken big strides this season and will only get better. 6

13. Luke Shuey
May have been either rusty or still a touch underdone in his return from injury. Just one touch in the first term, but got going after quarter-time with a couple of clearances then exploded in the third term with nine disposals for the stanza. Still lacked his trademark explosiveness. 5

14. Liam Duggan
Had a busy start to the night across half-back, winning a game-high 12 disposals and four intercepts in the first term. Faded a little after quarter-time, but was a constant presence in defence for the Eagles throughout the game. 6

15. Jamie Cripps
Proved he’s still a super important player to this Eagles line-up, particularly in the last term when he had a team-high seven touches. Finished the game with 1.2 from 17 disposals, seven inside 50s, seven score involvements and 453m gained. 8

17. Josh Kennedy
Jordan Roughead went straight to the champion goalkicker at the first bounce and kept him goalless in the first term. But Kennedy sparked the Eagles into action, booting the Eagles’ first two goals of the second term. Had a few chances in the final term, but booted 1.2 to finish with 3.4 for the match. 5

20. Jeremy McGovern
Went to Brody Mihocek, but quintessentially tried to intercept as often — and he did that lots, finishing with a game-high 11 intercept possessions. Did make a couple of blunders during the fourth term he would’ve liked back, but if he wasn’t out there for the Eagles they wouldn’t have been in the contest. 7

21. Jack Petruccelle
Just three touches for the night, all came in the first half. 2

25. Shannon Hurn
Tried to get loose and intercept as much as possible. Typical Hurn game, winning the ball back off the opposition and using the ball effectively to provide the Eagles with efficient drive from defence. 7

27. Jack Darling
Manned up by Darcy Moore and had an early win, kicking the first goal of the game. Was a constant threat all night, finishing with 3.2 from 13 disposals and six marks. 7

28. Tom Cole
Just the seven kicks playing across defence. 4

30. Jackson Nelson
Was assigned Josh Thomas at the start of the game, with the Pie finishing goalless from nine touches. Nelson had nine disposals himself. 5

33. Brayden Ainsworth
Had the Eagles crowd pumping with a brilliant snap goal in the second quarter. But had just one disposal after half-time. 3

Im glad this sort of stuff is being picked up in the general media now*. The throw has become much more entrenched in the modern game and umpires seem to be willing to let it go as if its some sort of natural result of trying to gather a contested ball. The fact that it helps play flow is probably a factor.

*Not an excuse for the loss last night

Hurn's win percentage is pretty good. Had that LTI in pooey 2008, played a lot of games in 2007 & 09, and pulled off a respectable 3-12 from 2010 & 6-6 from 2013. Sneaky bunga!

Nothing will be done because that *stick Gil wants the throw in the game for the QLDers.

The Umpires had a 'mare. Plain and simple. Thethrow was as blatant as you'll see.

So did at least 10 Eagles.

Much like the Bullies game we still should have won despite our shortcomings.

Worried we will serve up the same next season already. Inconsistent performances off the back of our uncontested attitude to the game. Our hard edged 2018 finals series is looking like a fortuitous anomaly.

Good to see Ryan get some recognition.
From the Robbo/HS.

2. MAYNARD V RYAN
It was match-up central at Perth Stadium and the No.1 contest – from the couch anyway – was between Brayden Maynard and Liam Ryan. Ryan is a spellbinding footballer and Maynard is the blue-chip, blue-collar back flanker. Their contest was riveting. Ryan won. He has overtaken Charlie Cameron as the most watchable player in the game and, similar to Cameron, has the capacity to have you fixated on him and him alone whenever he is close to the ball — be it when it’s on the ground or in the air. What’s Flyin’ Ryan worth? If Jordan De Goey is in the $700,000 bracket, then Ryan is nearing $800,000.

This is my biggest concern moving forward. The game of AFL always goes through stages of transition. Prior to the Hawks 3peat the Ross Lyon scrum was popular. Then the Hawks developed the accurate kicking game to defeat it. Now we're in a stage where the better teams are starting to get on top of the accurate kicking game via a "run n gun" strategy out of defence. This necessitates a faster, more contested style of play which we arent suited to.

I give props to Simmo for innovating Woosha's high half-forward press into "the web", then rejigging that into the uncontested kick-mark game that won us a flag. But he needs to do it again, because I feel like our gamestyle is starting to hit its twilight and the game is pivoting towards "chaos ball" contested play. I think the Cats will suffer a bit from the same thing too, and its why I cant see them beating Richmond in a GF.

At the end of the day I actually think we ended up losing to Collingwood because of game style rather than luck or the umps. They manned up and congested our forward line in order to deny our forwards as many marks as possible, then ran in waves out of the 50 and cut us up in transition (during plays where Nic didnt just beast-mode it into the 50 himself). Combined with the fact that we concede WAY too many F50 entries to opposition teams its a worrying sign. Even if we had won last night, the Pies gamestyle made the game much closer than it had any right to be from an 8th placed side. They've theoretically worked out how to beat Simmo at his game, and its not gonna be long before the rest of the 8 figure out something similar.

Lost to Brisbane, Port, Tigers, Collingwood, Bullflogs.

All the relevant sides bar Geelong have worked us out already.

I agree.

We basically need to have top 2/4 sewn up with 3-4 rounds to go

Brisbane and Poort have more to do with the fact that we played them when we were sooking in the hub (still dark on the team for the attitude displayed to the media in the first hub...), but after watching Brisbane for a bit I think they have developed a similar gamestyle to Richmond and would beat us the same way anyway. Dogs are getting there but arent good enough to consistently pull it off yet IMO.

Port have our measure easily. Any objective view of the past 3-4 years shows that we rely on Charlie Dixon kicking all behinds instead of goals to even be in the match. Their side is built around contested footy and we are built around avoiding bruises.

A total inability to generate repeat i50, due to lack of forward pressure and our defensive system collapsing on transition and allowing the opposition free reign to attack through the corridor is unsustainable. Basically Darling and Kennedy can't miss a shot all day (unreasonable! ) or we are under the pump.

Seriously...how can all our small forwards simultaneously fail to get the football or defend their man? That has to be a system problem.

yep we won a couple of lucky games v port but other than that they kill us most times.

Same v Cats.

Weve won a couple of come back style home games v them but other tyan that they kill us

We beat Richmond once at home, a good win yes;, but the times since when it really mattered we fell short.

we cant match the tough teams for contested footy for 4 qtrs

Haven't lost to Cats at home for a long time (since before simmo coached?). Haven't beaten them away since 2006.
