I was baffled then and I’m still baffled now as to why Freo didn’t take one of Naughton or Allen with their first two picks of the 2017 draft.

Both Cerra and Brayshaw was overkill

Because Fremantle.

I think I actually laughed when they didn't take any KPP on draft night.

I see the logic in trading Fyfe as presented by Embley, but you just can't do it if you're Freo.

Bloke won a Brownlow last year and single handedly embodies "face of the franchise" more than any player in the AFL. They're going nowhere fast (which is part of Embley's reasoning to trade him), his career will be wasted in bottom four and maybe some day bottom ten mediocrity, but it would be a hammer blow to their support and would signal to the fans "do not give us your money, we aren't trying for the next five years". Too many current fans on the fringes would just fall away, you'll have a generation of 14-18 year olds who will have never seen a Freo derby win that they can remember, the next generation of supporters are never picking Freo over West Coast with that on offer. With the Eagles up and about, with the gulf in history and support already, it would be a remarkable step to say yes, we will alienate an entire generation of support because it would net a good draft haul. Kills their off field prospects.

On field; they struggle to retain B+F winners as is, Neale and Hill have bolted. Stephen Hill is a light breeze away from a nursing home, Mundy the same. Assuming Fyfe is traded at the end of this year and Mundy retires, they'll have not a single Doig Medallist on their list. Can't imagine too many sides ever have a season without having any past winners on their list.

Walters on his own with a bunch of kids is a recipe for bottom two year in, year out. The players they rate but can't keep healthy like Pearce and Hogan are getting paid to rehab, not play. Nobody is requesting a trade there, no impactful free agents are picking Freo. It's an on field death sentence to their club for the next half decade at least. The idea that picks alone, without culture/without a way of retaining kids/without unwavering fan support, leads to success has been proven false by the struggles of the QLD clubs, by the Melbournes and Carltons who languished for years. It's far better in theory than in reality.

They just don't have the faith built up after four years of rebuilding to wave a white flag and usher in another five or so years (at best) of irrelevance. The rusted on fans would stay but financially and with member numbers, the club would feel the burn of it for decades. I see why you do it on a football manager simulation, but not in reality.

I think what you're trying to say is Freo should trade Fyfe, and then fold.

For a team starved of success I can't see them trading away their most 'successful' player.

Freo really tried to load up on ready made players in the past few years, I'm guessing to have another crack at a premiership while Fyfe is in his prime. By trading Fyfe they would be throwing away their list build from the past 3 years.

Honestly you're onto something there. What Freo need is another club to get in Fyfe's ear and have him push for a trade. Freo can act ashen-faced and grim about it, but quietly be thrilled to pocket the picks.

As good a player as Fyfe is I think their might be some "attitude" problems around him that a club would have to take into account when trading. For example, before being made captain he was supposedly weighing up his options to go to another club, and he insinuated that he would only stay if made captain of the side. Boom - Fyfe got made captain and he stayed.

Similarly when the players did that "vote for your captain" thing a few years ago the rumour was someone like Mundy or Walters actually won it, but Nat cracked the sh*ts so magically he got made captain again.

And of course there were a bunch of rumours about Fyfe not getting on with Ross.

Bloody good player without a doubt, but if half his antics are true I wouldnt want to be the coach to put up with it.

I highly recommend reading the draft day thread from this page on. Quite an entertaining draft thread at the time and even more so in hindsight given whose names get brought up on this board so frequently

Can we play Rioli and Ryan in the same side? Cripps? What a waste of a pick and a first rounder next year. Absolute ******* rabble of a club.

Freo supporters still holding out hope... some are slowly starting to realise.
I think the fact melbourne's tune went from "haha you'll never ever get Hogan off us, not for a million first rounders" to "we'll take anything you have for him" after he did his navicular was probably the most clear warning ever

To be honest, I don't know if they would even get the option. I'm not sure any club will give up multiple first rounders for a 29 year old with soft tissue issues.

IF someone were willing to empty the bank for him, i think freo would take it. They're screaming out for future KPP's all over the park. Hogans cooked, Taberners past his used-by date etc. etc.

Yeah they were pretty keen to get rid of him while he was still worth something. Freo were desperate to finally land that big KPF after so many failed attempts

That's great. Reading the names everyone is throwing out there. Then we end up with Oscar, who i wouldn't go back and swap for any of those picks that went before him (and we now have Kelly). Just goes to show it's really just so unpredictable. In saying that, I'm sure I'll get annoyed each year when we miss out on a player i only first heard about a few weeks earlier and is suddenly the best thing since sliced bread.

Your post 6152 of that thread has a serious powerful prediction though:)
I deserved that kick in the balls

to be fair, we had bowed out of finals disappointingly again, blamed it on a poor midfield (which had also just lost two Brownlow medallists Priddis and Mitchell), and we had stockpiled draft picks after doing that trade with GC.

I think a lot of us saw that as an opportunity for a mini rebuild and envisioned a midfielder oriented draft similar to 2007 where we took Masten, Ebert and Selwood.

The fact the only mid we took was some dweebus looking guy that no one was talking about was pretty disappointing at the time.

I 100% admit I'm in the same boat. After all the talk of us taking mids and Stephenson possibly sliding (who i decided we had to have off the back of 1 article), i was so angry when we took Brander. Then even more so when Kelly went and the cherry on top was Ryan. By the time we took Anus, i just couldn't take it anymore. I was convinced 2018 was a write off with the worst midfield imaginable. You campaigners know what happens next.

Haha, what a ride the 2017 draft was. I remember melting super hard in real life about our failure to draft any of the highly-rated mids of that draft, looks like I avoided any BF melts here tho.

I really wanted Higgins with our first. And he probably would've ended up a forward if he played for us too, but I still reckon we would've loved the shit out of him in our team in any case too. He's not a midfield gun but he's a legit footballer.

After this disappointment, I managed to convince myself that Venables really must be Shuey Mk II, and as a result we'd be more dynamic without Priddis / Mitchell.

Goes to show, it's never on-topic to link to any other BF draft threads in this particular thread pls
