Intermittent fasting

I get home around 5, so on workout days I
-drink a whey shake in the car to break the fast
-work out as soon as I get home
-eat a massive meal (whatever I want, but generally involving a big hunk of some animal)
-plan a before bed meal (generally oats and fruit)
-snack inbetween these two meals based on what macros I have left to spend

I want to add in a lunch time run on weekdays, anybody reckon I should change up the pattern? Berkhan seems to be against high intensity cardio, but I'm talking about a jog, maybe 5 km.

Thinking about changing to a 16/8 and eating a meal before I leave work (around 3:30), but only if I find the hunger too hard to overcome.

.
I reckon a 5km run would be fine in the fasted state. I've been going on 12km brisk walks just prior to breaking 36 hour fasts. It is surprising how much energy you have.

Interesting thread, new to me and done a bit of research since finding this. For anyone who may know, if doing a 16/8 split would it be fine to keep it to 1-2 days a week? Or whoevers on that split what's your experiences? With training I usually have my 6 meals a day, but like the idea of this. I did a 16 hour fast from last night until today and found it easy, just not sure whether to do it daily or a couple of times a week. Cheers.

16 and 8 is the lean gains method which requires you to stick to it 7 days a week. Search lean gains for more info.

Alright evo, reading your posts about this in the other thread has inspired me. I'm gunna give the 24 hour fast once per week method a go.

I'm carrying some extra weight in the stomach/love handle area that I've always found difficult to shift, so I'll see whether this helps.

I've been reading stacks on IF the last couple of months -I'm happy to help with any questions you have.

Is having a coffee on the morning of the fast day considered cheating?

I only drink one per day but I struggle to get going in the morning without it.

strictly speaking you aren't supposed to have white coffee, or with sugar, according to Brad Pillon. Black is ok. But I couldn't go without my morning coffee either - so I kept having it - but switched from my normal two sugars to using artificial sweetener.

It's not a deal breaker I reckon. If it helps you get through the first few hours, which are often the hardest then I reckon you are better off drinking your coffee.

1 calorie diet drinks are fine too. Apart from that try not to have anything. The whole idea is to get your Growth hormone levels elevated which directs your body to burn purely fat.

I'm fine with black coffee. Been trying to cut down how much sugar I put in anyway so I'll give it a go straight.

The way to think of it, is most of the time hunger is a habit/reflex so to speak not *actual* or real hunger.

If you get hungry - just ignore it and it should go away, or a coffee or diet softdrink is normally enough to get you past it.

Everyone would benefit from it - I'm definitely a convert. Just drinking water for 24 hours ( or even 16 hours) every once in while gives your digestive tract, colon and liver a chance to clean itself out; and a well earned break.

I suspect it has improved my skin texture as well.
but aren't you starving?

edit: so fasting for 24 hours once a week is good enough?

your laughing then.

Keep us updated. I'm always keen to hear how others are finding it. I'm trying to get Mrs evo it give it go. No luck so far.
I read this thread about three weeks ago, read up on leangains and started. Never heard of IF previously.
Background - 44yo lazy bastard. Been eating shit and planning to get back into weights for years.

I do 16/8 - midnight to 4pm. Ties in with after work weights.

Downside: missed out on mums big 'wog style' spread for lunch on dads birthday couple of weeks ago.

Upside: Relentless energy. Even when labouring during the day I feel light and energised - it's almost counter-intuitive. Not quite the dompamine like rush you mentioned earlier but damn if I dont feel better/younger. Big plus not having to faff around with making/buying food for work. I'm now a man of leisure during work breaks.

Weight loss has been fairly dramatic. Only dropped 3kg on scales but my (becoming substantial) gut has almost vanished. Pants don't lie!

It is easy to do*. Felt a bit weird not eating during the day in first few days but it's normal now. I have no intentions of ever changing back.

* I also cheat with coffee. Max 2 a day (white & sugar:oops:)

Just got to give up the darts now.

Glad I found this thread.

into my second week now
doing 16/8 - 1pm-9pm feed.

took 4-5 days to get used to the hunger first thing in the mornings but otherwise doing well. drinking water and pepsi max during hte fasting period. as a lover of food, absolutely demolishing dinner is something i'm enjoying. gotta clamp down on some of my crappy foods though, slowly down fat loss

Started my first 24 hour cycle after dinner tonight. Ironically enough I've spent all night since then researching the effects of starvation on the body for a mock speech I'm writing about malnutrition deaths in 3rd world countries.

Well done mate. :thumbsu: I've noticed IF videos are exploding on Youtube lately. I suspect it is about to get wider recognition in the media very soon. Expect an Today Tonight expose story sometime soon. Coming up next: "The Miracle Diet that Costs Nothing!"

yeh, once a week is enough. twice if you want to be really agressive.
Cool, i'm going to give it a go early next week.

I started watching that doco you posted early in this thread last night but fell asleep. I'll finish it off in the next few days. I've seen another Michael Mosley doco where he found out he had visceral fat.

We had a guy named Paul Taylor (nutritionist, neuroscientist, Biggest Loser consultant etc) speak to us at work the other day & his reasoning for why this method is one of the better ones is because the body's evolution has developed genes to adapt to periods where we had to go without food (more so when we had to hunt it ourselves).

Glad I stumbled across this thread & hat others have used it successfully.
