Is there anything to be said for the AFL to start using a round ball in their own code? That way the issue of the ball would not be such a big deal in the IR series and it would be much more competitive compitition as the Irish would not have such a big advantage. IMHO it makes solid sense and would bridge the gap between the two teams.

Change the whole nature of their game to accommodate for a test that's on 2 out of every 3 years? Yeah right!

This has to be a troll?

Change 150+ years of tradition to help win a game the public, clubs and players barely seem to care about?

If anything we could just field a decent coach and squad, much simpler. Will not happen though.

Among others - huge amounts of bullshit spouted by both sets of fans.
Well then I hope you weren't reffering to me.

The Irish squad was solid, not the best you could field but very good, given it had players with both previous IR and AFL experience.

Your coach also now knows how the game is played and took first hand lessons from a master about what is needed to combat the Aussies in the hybrid sport last year.

From what I hear, the team trained solidly and had exceptional preparation.

Contrast this to Australias effort. First time coach as well as many of the support staff. Eade having been virtually sacked this year, you have to wonder how much his heart and mind were on the job. Virtually no prior preperation, with a young, inexperienced squad the majority of which have never played an IR game. Heck some of those players are borderline best 22 even at AFL level.

I won't say it was disrespectful, but it must make people question the overall commitment we have to the game.

I have just read alot of posts on this site, I couldn't help myself with those comments. This forum honestly is a really sad reflection of AFL supporters. My heart goes out to you guys, hopefully some day you will see the light.

No, not you at all - more the eejits claiming boxing rights etc etc.

Yeah, Aussie preparation was pretty poor. As I say, out of the team which one the All-Ireland, we only had Cluxton in the squad and there were a good few others who would have got in from other counties who have club commitments. I think that on both sides, to differing degrees, there is a distinct lack of commitment, though I'd say that when it's back on Irish soil, we should get a decent crowd.

For all its faults (and there are many), it's the only chance we get to see our lads represent the country and I guess the same goes for you.

I don't recall Aussie rules fans storming hogstand after the win last year and behaving like bellends, I suggest you look to your own conduct first before criticizing others.

Why are people so afraid of change??? A round ball in the Aussie Rules would speed the game up, lend for better scores, fielding etc as well as improve there ball control. The IR series would be more relevent if the teams were on equal terms in regards skills. Atm it's a joke but it could be a great series. MAybe get some other countries in too? Two isn't enough. Maybe Denmark?

Its the claim that 99% of IR is from the Irish game that is grinding their goat, which is fair. I was looking at a few highlights a few months ago on Youtube and was wondering why the ball handler wasn't getting tackled. Just complete ignorance of their rules on my part, and I'd suggest it would apply to a fair few Aussies' posts in this thread.

Most of the rules in IR don't apply to either games. It would be easy to presume the 4 handballs per chain rule was in their game, and it isn't out of the question some of the Irish blokes sitting at home would think we have that rule in Aussie rules. Some of the rules in IR seem completely arbitrary, obviously one rule might favour one team more than the other.

One of the glaring advantages I noticed watching tonight and last week was how well the Irish boys read the flight of the ball. They must have had triple the marks we did tonight. Sure, their kicking is miles better than ours, but they were winning 1 on 1 contests by simply judging the round ball better in the air. The Irish bloke in the green oven gloves taking grabs against one of our best spoilers in the league in Frawley really accentuated that.

Btw, I noticed a lot of you blokes posting from Ireland have a favourite team listed. Would be interesting to hear some of the reasons why you became fans of those sides. Cheers.

You're changing something that is fundamental to Australian culture. I don't think you realise the gravity of change what you're suggesting would make. I'd say it would immediately become a different sport.

Good idea, except I reckon Gaelic should use an oval ball instead, would have the same level of skill as us then.

I assume youd be OK with that?

Of course you'd be mad to change your ball just as we would be to start playing with an oval one! The reason the round ball is used is because its easier to learn how to use it as shown by your team last year! This year the AFL just fcuked up with their coach, team, prep and scheduling in and the GAA took it seriously learning from what went wrong last year - its as simple as that.

Why we follow/support teams in Australia? A lot of it is down to following Irish players. The Swans have lots of fans from Co. Kerry because of Tadgh who might have switched to St.Kilda after he retired but won't now that a vertain T. Walsh will be playing for them. Lots of Cork men follow Charlton etc because of Setanta or Saibte as the call hin in their Cork accents! Look out for loads of Mayo lads following Brisbane because of Hanley, I folloe the 'Pies because of Dyas who is now back home in Armagh.

what an embarrassment that "game" was. Youd think that was the death of the international rules series from that crowd turnout and lack of player committment.

Question has to be asked - why wouldnt we play 1 state of origin series every 2 years, and do away with this crap "hybrid" game. Know what id prefer watching...

This was my assumption.

As for Hanley, very glad he is an AFL player much like Touhy is a seriously talented lad.

Yeah, Australian sides. Speaking of Kerry, I've noticed a few nasty comments about Tadhg Kennelly on Youtube. Are Kerry the Collingwood equivalent, or is Tadhg regarded as a dirty Gaelic player or something? (the hate seemed a little much, even on the disproportionately hateful youtube) He's quite liked here.

Was impressed byTouhy this season. Wasn't fazed by being used as a sub fairly often.

In his AIF win with Kerry Tadgh took out a player at the throw in and should have been sent off - He knew well the ref would not have the b**ls to send him off in the first minute!

Kerry are the most successful County team in Ireland and as a result are not the best liked. They have a reputation for playing the best and purest football but could not have won as many All-Irelands if they were not able to'come the heavy' when the needed to. Of course they strongly deny theyt ever play outside the rules!

The team every body hates is Dublin! As the GAA is mostly a rural organisiation its a town/urban area (the Jackeens) against the country lads (the Culchies!)

lived in Perth and married to a girl from there. her dad and most of her friends are big eagle supporters, and it was around the time of Judd/Cousins/Kerr etc so it was an obvious choice really. had always followed AFL, but never really had a team.

It's hybrid rules.
That's a matter of opinion, anyway my old Belfast mate Joe will be happy, but I can't help but feel Australia lost the series more than Ireland won it. Some of the selections were a bit perplexing to say the least - Including the coach.

I found it a bit funny that the young bloke Walsh said they were primed for physicality. With Brad Green as captain. I'm sure the Irish fans are flooding the youtube pages as we speak.

because if you remember the last one all we'd be looking at is our own teams players and cringing every time they, rer in a contest so they don't get injured. It's a rubbish spectacle that doesn't work anymore. This isn't the 80's

Is it safe to say R.I.P International Rules? It seems like the games is just losing whatever interest people had in it. Then they went out last night and got in all these melees which is what suspended the program a few years ago.

It won't be on next year.

It won't be on next year, but the AFL has just committed to a new series in 2013 and 2014. WTF? Can you imagine how bad the crowds will be here in 2014? I used to go to these games but I didn't this year and never will again, after watching it on TV. The whole thing was just embarrassing and would have set back promotion of our own game on the Gold Coast by years.
Whatever goodwill or curiosity there was for this game has been well and truly lost, and even if every All Australian put his hand up to play I don't think it would make any difference. I reckon the next time they play in Melbourne, they will be lucky to get a crowd of 5,000.
