just want some thoughts on henry? handy player but jess white is better player and younger with no barry hall i thought this would be the perfect time to get him in and give him a real go

I don't know how you could say White is better after 1 senior game? He was impressive for a debutant but he's not going to be able to compete against the bigger, stronger backmen the way Playfair is. Henry has a very good pair of hands and has been giving 110%, just needs to work on that woeful kicking style.

I really like the look of White but I don't think he's the answer to our forward line problems just yet and I'm sure Roos and the rest of the coaching panel would much prefer to introduce him back into the team as a second or third forward option rather than throw him in the deep end as the sole focal point.

i really wanted roos to persist with white
i agree, i think he's the man-child to be groomed as bazza's eventual replacement, and i think it's only a matter of time
but i don't see much wrong with what hank's done so far, although hank is NOT a hall substitute by an stretch
playing him as a second or third tall, alongside hall and micky o is the likely plan for the rest of the season, i'd have thought, and it seems more that he's got davo's place in the team

Davo'll prove inexpendable to the team in the near future, especially after Mick retires .. to have a ready made, talented pocket player to call upon will provide the team with underrated structure and balance.

Oh, and I think you mean 4th tall, since we have RyanO there too. Having Baz, Kennelly and Malch back and firing.

Imagine a set tall forward line with Hall, RyanO, MickyO and Playfair, and the Mattner/Kennelly/Malch backline to complement. Yikes

thankfully we have gotten at least 1 player from Geelong that might be able to do a half decent job. (Chambers anyone?)

He presents really well and it's only a matter of time before (i believe) he'll hit a good patch of form and contribute to 2-4 goals a game. (Optimism)

As well as having a good blend of experience (Goodes, Kirk, J Bolton) and youth (Moore, Bird, Jack) in the midfield too. If we can keep that best 18 on the field, we could make another top 4 finish

i don;t count ROK as a forward
and you're kidding, ma'am, if you think davis is a readymade replacement for anyone other than the blokes in the crowd with their feet up on the seats in front of them
davis has a lot of serious work ahead of him just to get back into contention for the side

i wouldn't be surprised if micky o was still playing after davis called it quits

He is a readymade replacement that needs a bit of tweaking, and I can bet he knows he needs to work on his pressure and dedication as much as you do, but that doesn't stop us from disregarding him as a serious option altogether.

I'd love for Mick to be playing 2009 onwards, but I think he's calling his bluff there.

davis has had a million-and-a-half warnings, chances, etc and he STILL won't pull his finger out when he has to
he's getting older, which will make it even harder to push himself through training, and each preseason will be even harder, specially if the reward of automatic senior selection is no longer there

Henry, could be the missing part in our jigsaw up forward. Not totally convinced at this early stage. I know that he has returned from injury, and
hasnt had a lot of games under his belt since we signed him.An honest mark,
and can read the play, kicking skills still a bit dodgy. Could be our best out of
three signings from Geelong in recent times.

But if he does get there, will anyone complain? He's getting there. Slowly, but when you see him in the reserves every other week, you see the difference.

i love what davis CAN do on a footy field
i hate the fact he doesn't do it most of the time
he's a club legend, his place in swans folklore is assured
his place in any future swans senior team is far from assured, and if he gets back he'll have earned it, i hope

Well, he looks to be appealling to Roos slightly, so that's an improvement. I wouldn't mind if he spent a month or so longer in the reserves, so long as he comes back intending to make a difference, employing the talent he undoubtedly has and exerting pressure onto the opposition all the time. If he comes back with that, we've got an invaluable addition to the team, and that extra month or so in the reserves wouldn't have gone amiss.

I didnt rate him to begin with, but he seems to be showing a bit, and a bit more quality game time will help his confidence, and that in turn will improve his kicking! He does seem to be taking his place in the team more seriously, previously, he carried himself as 'just a fill in'! Now I think he could cement a spot if he keeps improving, and I think he knows it!

Well, you could argue he already is. He's given more to the team in his 2 games so far than Spriggs or Chambers did at their entire time at the club.

I think it's no coincidence that MOL has found some form since Playfair has come in. Playfair knows when, but more importantly where to lead and MOL is enjoying a lot more space to weave his magic.

Yep, spot on. I don't think Roosy has Hank in the team for his kicking, he has after all, said on many occasions, particularly in reference to Dickie, that goal kicking is not his major concern, he prefers his forwards to be able to tackle, make a contest and keep the ball in our 50. That's exactly what Hanks been doing since he came into the team and that has enabled Mickie to do his thing - and how much better have we looked!
If he kicks a couple, that's a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

I havnt been impressed with him at all actually. Am I missing something?

Would prefer we stuck with White.
agreed, he played ok against Essendon who we flogged, and was quiet last week.

Suggesting he is good because he makes room for MOL is laughable. Good forwards do that and get possessions, assists, and goals.

This is AFL, mediocrity has no place

There are several young ones playing already they need some mature bodies. We all bemoan the lack of talls. Maybe just Essendon but his hands are superb, leads to space well, makes a contest, which in the absense of Hall .....is crucial.

I hope he proves me wrong *PLEASE*:o.... but imo IS the worst kick for goal in the league especially since Kent Kingsley was axed.... but:eek: he even slotted 2 good long wobbly ones last game.

Got to use all the list and try to get value ... SSFC is not a Geelong retirement home and despite a few recent TORTUREous failures!! Diesel and Cressa came from there, laws of probability say we must pick up another a good one from there eventually:thumbsu:

I'm a Henry fan!:D

They must be trying to get us back after giving them Mooney and Arnott. :p

That goal Henry kicked from 50 on the fence gave me a tingling feeling about life after Hall and MOL. I'd say he will at least give us an option over the coming years. He needs to work on his 2nd and third efforts. But his ability to present, and crash packs is very promising. And he has fantastic hands. Plus he's only young.

IMHO it's no coincidence that our form line has improved since he filled the hole that Hall left. And I see no reason why he couldn't do the same on a more full time basis over the coming years.

I completely agree Tuco. I know a lot of posters here don't rate him on what we've seen so far and I'm not trying to say he's going to be a great forward but as you have said he seems like he is at least capable of playing a role and regularly being selected in our best 22. On most occasions I have seen him go for a mark this year he has been double and sometimes triple teamed and has still managed to at least create a contest. I think with Hall back in the side we will see Henry taking a lot more marks and really cement his place in the side.
