Review Is our forward line dysfunctional?

Winderlich kicked 7 goals in the V.f.l in under 3 quarters, And kicked 4 goals twice. And ever since re-entering the a.f.l i think he has kicked 4 or 5 goals only. Please do not believe that JD will fix our forward line magically.

Carlisle was in our forward line for 2 mins before he took an uncontested mark inside 50. First time I've seen that from one of our key forwards in a long time. Maybe Hurley needs some game time down back to remember how to get separation from a defender.
It was great to see Carlisle's work in our forward line, but it's possible that the Sydney defenders saw him down there, didn't rate him as a major threat and so they gave him more space than they would give, say, Hurley or Gumbleton.

Not to mention the fact that the intensity of the game had dropped significantly by that stage since the game was over. Getting goals during rubbish time does not mean you are a long-term forward prospect.

I doubt it. Sydney are a pretty professional unit and he marked twice more IIRC.

Winders was better yesterday, but is still woefully out of form. He's worth persisting with for much, much longer though because he's so good when he's on.

We need to get rid of Kommer and bring in forwards who can actually threaten the scoreboard.
I thought Winders showed signs too, not far off hitting his best IMO.

On the dysfunctional forward line, I wonder if we're slightly behind the new trends where clearances and inside 50's aren't everything. We win most of these stats and spend significant time in the front half, but it is to a heavily congested i50 to score easily, at least against good teams.

Then again we've looked dysfunctional since Hurley has been out... May be the key to effective i50s and structure despite not kicking bags of goals.

Agree with this to some extent. We look good with hurley hitting up to the wings.

But i think the whole kick long and strong in hope thing is just as big an issue

I don't think that's the case. I'd rather have our inside 50 and clearance figures than Geelong's. We just need to start converting them - if we do, we'll be destroying teams.

All our forwards, be it due to poor delivery or a show of strength at every contest, are hell bent on wrestling.

I'm yet to see consistent lace out passes onto a strong lead into space for most of this season and I thought we started going way downhill from the GWS game, where bombing it into the square was the norm.

Not much has changed from that game on.

Look at when we have been beaten and who by... Geelong played flawlessly against us and we should have won. That game was tailor made for Sydney in the wet, then we were a man down and lost one our hardest midfielders in Howlett. Brisbane wont have another game like that this year. Pure anomaly.
I don't think there is anything much wrong except to say we are better again with Hurley and Davey.

oi am not complaining about carliisle kicking two in the lqst quarter, the move should have been made at hqlf time. trb are too reluctant to move around our key talls.

Lol Carlisle is similar to Hurley... Both played back and then went forward and dominated for a small time. I would rather keep Carlisle back so he doesn't get injured so much like Hurley does!

surely Just because Jake went forward and in the last quarter and took a couple of marks and kicked a couple of goals people arent expecting him to line up there every week? He is in line for the all Aus full back, leave him there and let him do what he does best. Our forward line will be much better with Hurls back leading up and crashing the packs and Davey doing all the ground work.

You watch the Swans and Hawks at their best and they are methodical in how they enter their forward line. We get it, give it off to stants or zaka streaming by, who bang it long which is where we get caught out as we don't have Betts, Garlett, Yarran crumbing. But the other issue is that Hurley isn't quick enough to create separation from his man on the lead. So it's the only option.
That's how I see it.

Geelong have been interesting in that they appear not to bother trying to win the clearance unless they get clean ball and can deliver effectively to a player in the forward line. When they don't get the clearance they seem to rely on being able to turn the ball over when the opposition get away one of those hurried, around the corner kicks from the square. I'd love to know who they have coming up with this sort of stuff for them because they seem like they've been at the cutting edge of gameplans for a long time now.

lol if only v.f.l form carried over to the afl, which clearly doesn't. See- Jetta, Pears, Winderlich

I'm pretty sure being 14 foot 11 will translate fairly well though

Love to know what your thoughts on our changes are. It's essentially like for like with an equally immobile but more natural forward in for TBC, and Hepp and Goddard to cover Dempsey with Howlett into the midfield.

Not particularly happy tbh.

Do you think Kommer is lucky to have kept his spot this week?

Was he possibly saved due to a lack of a real quality small forward and too many changes to the team?
