Roast It's difficult to be a defender these days...

... unless you're playing on Michael Hurley.

In which case, you have a license to scrag, hold, chop arms, push and general infringe on him.

What does his man have to do before Hurley gets a free kick?

Yep. Absolutely manhandled all day.

Yet, at the other end, we saw some soft-as-butter crap paid against Hooker and Dustin.

I still have no idea what the decision to Freewoldt in the goal square in the second quarter (when Hooker was being held) was all about.

Hurley to me seems to Play into his defender. So i think thats where the Umpires are coming from, probably thinking its mutual Holding.

But still he seems get killed by the umps.

I first started noticing this last season. The amount of times he has to go at the ball with 1 hand because the other is being held is absolute bullshit. He constantly gets scragged and held off the ball. He does pretty bloody well not to blow his top imo.

On the other hand Reiwoldt grabs Hooker by the jumper them pushes him straight in the face and gets a free kick. Fletcher outbodies Goddard and is penalised for being too strong.

Hurley just needs a few little things to click and he will absolutely tear a game to pieces.

The scragging and holding is blatant - Riewoldt, Goodes, Pav would have received multiple free kicks for the stuff that Hurley has been subjected to this year.

IMO a bit of it has to do with the fact that Hurley doesn't have the status of a Riewoldt or a Goodes.

When the footage of the game goes up on bigpond I hope someone makes a gif of that, absolutely hilarious footage.

That was shocking. I was sitting there watching that contest just thinking they're going to give Riewoldt a free there. Absolutely shocking call considering he was holding onto Hooker for dear life.

Sadly, I reckon he'll have to cop it for the rest of his career.

I've seen it with the likes of Hall, Fev and Brown for as long as I can remember. For some reason the bigger boys don't seem to get looked after as much as the weedy ones like Riewoldt.

Hurley is one of the bigger boys and Roo is weedy?

Riewoldt is significantly bigger than Hurley.

Franklin gets it the worst from any star I've seen.

I can't stand Hall but it is an injustice the way he has been trated by the umps throughout his career.

Gets a far rougher deal than any forward I've seen play the game.

Well I didn't see every contest but in some of them Hurley seemed to do the classic Fev move which is to back into the defender and either lock one or both arms yourself into the defender's, so it looks like the defender is holding but actually the forward has locked arms first into the defender. Hence why they don't get paid. Fevola used to do it all the time.

Still frustrating because it's a forward from your team (and that's how we felt when Fev was playing for us) but you can see why they don't get paid.

Don't get me wrong, Hurley still has a fair bit of filling out to do, and Riewoldt has a wider frame, but Hurley's a naturally big guy, whereas Riewoldt's, well, weedy.

Being tall and wide doesn't make you a "big boy"; Hurley's already bigger in the arms, shoulders, chest, back and legs.

Riewoldt is a girly man.

It's quite sad, I think that Hall could have gotten into the 900 goal mark without the rough treatment he gets.
I was spitting it today, Hurley is very good at using his body within the rules.

Exactly. Status. cf Lloyd, M.

Gumby copped a hiding in Sydney last year apparently, just held off it every time.

No doubt umpires have their fave forwards..

Revolt, Notsogood and Pavlova get more than their share.. essentially go within 2 mtrs of them in an attempt to defend and you will more than likely give up the free..

On the other hand Hurley has joined the other, dark, side:

Franklin, Hall, Hurley... essentially defenders take note that you can basically assault them and have no danger of a free being paid.

Its honestly disgusting the treatment these blokes get compared to the top 3..
