I was talking with a mate about good 3rd tall defenders, and I made the comment "James Gwilt is a poor mans Josh Gibson". He disputed that. So, I'm asking BigFooty who's better, Gwilt or Gibson?

All bias aside, I don't even know a St Kilda supporter who would even vote for Gwilt. One guy was in the All Austraalian squad of 40 and was regarded a top 50 player in the comp in 2011. The other guy is James Gwilt.

You obviously don't watch many St Kilda games. Gwilt has been a gun defender for the last few years, he was in All Australian form last year before suffering an ACL injury mid season. I'd rate him ahead of Gibson.

I'd probably rate them about even. Gwilt is very underrated, and Gibson is a bit overrated imo.
Gibson is probably better at spoiling, but Gwilt provides more drive out of the backline.

I'll vote for Gwilt though, simply because I like him more :p

Gibson. not taking anything away from gwilt but Gibson has surprised me since he has come to Hawthorn. Great spoiler, excellent disposal and is rarely beaten. one of the poorer AA decisions in recent years to leave him out.

How would Gwilt go on Buddy Reiwoldt etc? definitely not as good as Gibbo whos real position is half back.
Did Gibbo man Buddy in the intra-club? :D

I was born before 2005 were you?:D
Gibbo v Buddy 2007 & 2008 were some of Buddys toughest gigs.
Forgot Gibbo played for North. They were good battles

Id go gwilt.

Josh Gibson got ragdolled by the J Pod for half a game and got a lazy five goals kicked on him,if he worried about footy as much as he loves himself he woud be OK.
:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'm taking it that this was only one of three, possibly four games you saw Gibbo play last year? If he can make the AA squad without trying, imagine if he actually gave a F#$%. He would be unstoppable!:thumbsu:

I would take Gwilt.

Not taking anything away from Gibson of course, but Gwilt is so underrated he's virtually forgotten about. Gibson on the other hand is pumped up a little too much. He's a good defender don't get me wrong, but I rate Gwilt just a bit more.

With Gwilt missing from the Saints, their backline pretty much falls apart. He's such a key ingredient.
