Unless we need to sacrifice a player to make a trade or clear some salary space, I'm confident that the back six can work with Frawley. While it's a pretty big backline overall, all of the talls besides Lonergan have the ability to play in a pocket, or on the flank.
I was more alluding to the possibility that Lonergan (now that Rivers has recommited) has indicated privately this might be his last and this is, in part, behind the Frawley chase.

Admit to not having checked, but hasn't Lonners signed for 2015?

Privately to whom? And if it's so private, how come it's been on here (the only place that I've read it incidentally)?

Frawley or no Frawley, if Geelong had the slightest inkling that Lonergan wasn't going on next year, they've been reckless in the extreme in the manner that they've managed his final season. The best that the club could have from Frawley at this stage is a verbal agreement and verbal agreements are pretty worthless (it's not like we can complain if he ends up signing somewhere else for 200k a year more).

Yes, he has a 2015 contract. Wouldn't be the first player to retire in those circumstances though.

Err, privately to the club. And of course, it's "on" BigFooty like 99% of BigFooty content - pure speculation.

All very plausible, if not likely. I was just throwing up a possibility that would be another explanation for goings on.

Might even free up Taylor to give Tom a hand in the forward line

Yes, been terrific. He is a class act, no doubt about that. And what a pair of hands he has! There was a period there of about 6 weeks where he was in our best five every week.

The guy is 29….I see no reason (barring injury) why he can't get another 2 seasons into himself if the desire is still there, and the body stands up. A rolling one year extension is the sensible route to take.

I imagine his off-field presence is also of great value to our young defenders coming through.

Brilliant season thus far!
I don't even think the Rivers fans could have predicted the impact he's had this year.

Bullshit, if you're a Melbourne supporter you know how good Jared Rivers is.

I've got family that are Geelong supporters and my uncle wasn't enamored with Rivers to begin with, to which I said just wait until he's fit and comfortable.

He's an extremely smart defender that plays to his strengths and doesn't try to force things he isn't capable of doing, he's a very very good defender and the way it looks he's not the best defender you'll get from us.

Jerks.

I miss you Riv.

We are taking good care of him ... Them... Him... It's not your fault. You gave them homes, a great culture and time to experience footy at the highest level.

We just gave them hope and wins.

As you said... Jerks...:)

Go Catters

Great news. Thanks Riv for your efforts thus far.

I would like to add that GFC first real dealings with free agency have proven to be good.

At first many thought they may have been flops with HMac injured and may never get on the park and Rivers getting injured and taking time to fit into the side. But right now they are both key inclusions in this year's finals. Not that I think they will make the ultimate difference and see us hold up another cup but without them we would not be as competitive as we have been this season and in the finals to come.

HMc wasn't FA, he was traded.

If not top 5, he'd come close.

Has been a pleasure watching Rivers this year. Been our 'Mr. Reliable' down back. Am rapt to learn he's going round again :thumbsu:
Not far off top 5. Great year.

Now the reason for the bump. You say you see no reason etc. as I bolded and I agree with that view. Just wondering as it's been suggested to me on the main board, that he has said 2015 is his last year. Does anyone know anything about this? 1 year deals are common for players in his age bracket. Just curious.

I haven't heard him say anything about retiring…or that 2015 is his last year. IF he's playing well and wants to go on, then I expect he will get another 12 months.

A year by year contract, as you say, is common for players in his age bracket. You know….the year by year Chapman refused!

Chappy also finished 9th in Essenjection's BnF

I hope he has more confidence now and we can get more out of him, get more of the sherrin.
