TWO Essendon warriors, Jason Johnson and Damien Peverill, appear finished at senior level.

Coach Matthew Knights last night said he had told the two premiership players they faced "limited opportunities", but he had not ruled a line through their names.

Chairman Ray Horsburgh, however, was more blunt.
"My understanding is they have been told," Horsburgh said yesterday.

"It's a very hard decision. They are wonderful club boys, Jason is a twice best-and-fairest and premiership player, both are warriors, but you've got to win the flag and they're not going to win us one.

"What Knightsy has told them is they're going to play some games this year, they're not going to be never heard of again, but we're going to play the kids."

At 2-5 and with the worst injury list in the competition, Knights hasn't been able to find a spot for Johnson since Round 2.

The popular midfielder, 30, has played the past five matches in the VFL, while Peverill, 28, has played two senior and two VFL games this year before suffering a cracked jawbone.

"I catch up with both men regularly and have told them opportunities at times won't be there and the reason is we'll be looking to give young players opportunity," Knights said.

"I've been honest with them, but by no means does it mean they won't be selected down the track.

"They were both disappointed, but both were reasonably comfortable when I sat down and explained to them the reasons why."

In a wide-ranging interview yesterday, Horsburgh revealed:

KNIGHTS had the total support of the board on his much-talked about offensive game plan;

THE Bombers would be aggressive in trading at the end of the season;

HE expected the club to challenge for the finals in 2010;

THE club yesterday passed 40,000 members for the first time in the club's history.

The chairman said the club would adopt Hawthorn's philosophy to recruiting, which would include aggressive trading of under-performing and middle-aged players for draft picks.

"They had all their picks and no one had heard of "Buddy" Franklin or (Jarryd) Roughead," Horsburgh said.

"We've just got to be patient and expect the same.

"Knightsy is not playing Jason Johnson and Damien Peverill and we cleared Mark Johnson, Bradley, retired Camporeale and Chris Heffernan. He might've have won a couple more games with those players, but we'd never win a flag," Horsburgh said.

Asked if ruthless trading can be expected at year's end, Horsburgh said: "Yes. That's Matthew's recommendation to the board.

"It's too early to say who, but we've got to sit down and look at it all, and say, 'We've got to get us the players that can win us a flag'. We've got to build the bodies up of the players we've got."

He said the board supported Knights' style of attacking football, but added the coach was aware defensive aspects would have to be implemented.

"He knows that, but he's saying he'll do that when they are ready for it, but at the moment they've still got a lot of learning with the offensive game plan," Horsburgh said.

"We're are getting overrun, but he's not going to flood, he's going to continue to run and attack. And if we get beaten by 50 or 60 points, it's part of the learning process.

"I accept it because I know where he's coming from, but it's hard for the fans.

"When we appointed Matthew, we said recruit accordingly and develop a game plan and play players who can win us a flag."

Horsburgh was pleased to announce the 40,000 membership target, considering the team's form in the past month.

"We are rapt, particularly with all of the events last year and everyone was saying they were going to tear up their memberships and they had the extraordinary general meeting to throw Peter Jackson and I out of the club," Horsburgh said.

"We've gone from 37,000 to 40,000 in the past month and we haven't won a game, so it's good faith."

The Dons expect Mark McVeigh and Dustin Fletcher to return this week and Kyle Reimers, Sam Lonergan and Jason Winderlich to be available.

Then why not delist them last year ya spanner instead of a bloke like Kepler Bradley who deserved at least one more go. Would be your starting CHF atm.

Seriously, what a idiot

They were contracted.

Johnson signed a two year deal at the end of 2006.

Pev signed a one year deal at the end of 2007. Pretty sure that's his second successive one year deal.

Kepler Bradley didn't want to stay at Essendon. Regardless.

Sheesh and to think we were aggressive in trying to get JJ to the club. Kinda glad that didn't work out. I love the bloke as a player but me thinks it's time to pull the pin

Isn't this what Damien Hardwick recommended when he was interviewed by the club 10 months ago?

It's also what Knights suggested, however Knights wanted to do it without trading out Lucas, Lloyd and Fletcher. Hardwick didn't and typically the story got thrown out there that Knights thought Essendon were challenging for a flag in the next couple of years.

Fair enough really.

What I would hope the club now does and it should do it is that both Johnson and Peverill are farewelled with respect.

By that I mean they are given the chance to play senior football one last time (Johnson could EASILY play this week), saying goodbye to the fans and the fans saying goodbye to them.

If they are denied that, then there will be other problems.

Isn't this what Damien Hardwick recommended when he was interviewed by the club 10 months ago?

Yes he did. Thank God Ray Horsburgh and the committee were behind the 8 ball when it came to evaluating coaches. Hardwick is a great assistant coach for the Hawks.

Essendon will have to make some tough decisions over the next two years as it rebuilds its list. Counting Jason Johnson, they have five players 30 and over on their list.

Keep going, Fletcher, Michael, Lloyd, McPhee are all past it. There are several other players that will never be, Courtney Johns, Hille, Laycock, Lovett and Lovett-Murray. If he is agressive as he says and chops the deadwood, there would only be one player left, Lucas. Make him captain and build a side around him, Jetta, Houli, Davey. Why didn't he do that at the start of the year, he knew that Essendon were not serious challengers, so why not 'bottom-out' and specifically build a list.

As much as I love to sh1t-can Geelong, they had the right idea by specifically building a list one position at a time. At this rate Essendon will still be building in 2020.

I am not saying this because of my hatred of Essendon, I enjoy the rivalry, if they are a strong side.

A. JJ was contracted, Pev signed a one year deal. They cleaned out a number of senior players again at the end of 2007. Rome wasn't built in a day.

B. Bradley would not be our CHF at the moment.

Where's the evidence to say Hardwick did and where's the evidence to say Knights didn't?

We know Dimma woiuld have ripped the heart out of Essendon with the trading of Lucas as an example. Fot that reason alone, he should never be a senior coach, as he has NFI about football. A proven fact.

You need to understand how the salary cap works, what a contract is and what is the correct amount of players to take in a draft.

Last year was a weak draft and this year will be strong. Why use 8 or 9 picks (which is what you seem to think is ideal) last season when you can use them the following season in a stronger draft.

Just have a think about it please.

How the f**k do you know ?

Seriously this is one of the biggest myths in football going around and I can't believe people are so gullible as to now think this is the gospel truth.

What we do know is that when Knights was appointed, the Essendon president said that Knights said he thought the list was good enough to make the finals in 2008. Now he is saying that they wont make the finals until 2010.

Yet another reason why we need a more open player market.

It's a disgrace the AFLPA allow clubs to treat players like this.

If Essendon aren't going to play them then why not let them be traded?

Yep and i'm pretty sure that their is a limit to the amount of players that can be delisted in any given season. In the last two seasons we have cleaned out a heap of dead wood and this season will be no different.

In their defence, had the club not been reamed by the injuries that they have right now and had their best 22 out on the park on a consistent basis, IMO I think with the talent they have they could make the finals

Sheeds gave JJ a two year contract when only 1 was warranted.

Pev deserved another year after being one of our best last year.

We got rid of some of the hacks last year but it wasn't a deep draft so I guess we kept the likes of Pev for one more year as we plan to dig deep into this one which by all reports is relatively good.

Knights said our the team can challenge for finals quite quickly. He is right because virtually any side can be in finals contention if one or two youngsters step up and you have a good injury run.

Any side can make the finals if they have a good run with injury. No problems with that first statement. Shows we are a proud club and are always trying. I wouldn't want any coach who wasn't trying to make finals.

That second statement of Horsborough's was just unneccasarily stupid IMO.

They wouldn't get a game in any other AFL team either.

Link please? From what i can recall Knights said he expected that we WILL be challenging for finals in 2010 but he is not prepared to say that we are no chance of making it in 2008. Would you prefer a coach come out and say we have no hope?

Does anybody know the exact amount of players that can be delisted in one season?

Didn't know Essendon won a flag between 03 and 07.
